On Friday, Gu Ye went to work, Liu Jiu and San Qi went to school, and Bao Ni was going to a job interview.
Bonnie has done a good job of keeping this a secret; she hasn't let a word of it slip by so far.
The main problem is that job opportunities are so rare these days. Not to mention permanent workers, even temporary workers are in high demand.
Although it was 1975, the rural outreach program continued, and the competition for positions was fierce. After all, no one would let their child go to the countryside if there was even the slightest chance, except for those who didn't love their children or wanted to avoid trouble.
Bonnie changed her clothes. There weren't any particularly stylish outfits these days; it was all very conventional: black pants and a white shirt—a safe bet. Worried about the diving test later, Bonnie brought an extra swimsuit, a new one sent by Aunt Gu, which she really liked.
Before leaving, Bonnie glanced at the next door. It seemed to be all tidied up. No one was coming over today. She wondered what kind of person the new neighbors would be. She hoped they wouldn't be too eccentric.
I rode my bicycle and arrived at the Children's Palace five minutes early.
They were only hiring two people, but hundreds of people took the exam, making the competition extremely fierce.
They all went into a large classroom. They would first have to take a written test, and only those who passed could have an interview. After the interview, they would have to undergo a practical assessment.
The test papers were handed out. Bonnie glanced at them; there weren't many questions, just two passages, a total of twenty questions.
Bonnie skimmed through the material; it covered basic knowledge from junior and senior high school, as well as some professional diving knowledge, but all were fundamental. Bonnie carefully considered her answers, making sure she didn't go beyond the curriculum. After all, she was accustomed to the most advanced diving knowledge, decades ahead of its time; if she were exposed, it would be disastrous.
Bonnie gave a standard answer; she had looked for information on this topic in bookstores, including reports and examples.
I checked it again. I didn't need to worry about the math problems; the main thing was to ensure there were no mistakes in the professional knowledge and political ideology.
Seeing that it was almost time, Bonnie raised her hand to confirm that the basic information, such as her name, had been filled in.
"Those who have finished can hand in their papers now. After handing in your papers, leave immediately and wait outside for the results. The results will be posted in an hour." The proctor explained the rules, and Bonnie handed in her paper and left the classroom.
More and more people gathered outside, some beaming with joy, some looking dejected, some frowning in thought... every face was filled with emotion.
Yes, graduation season is just around the corner, and another wave of people going to the countryside is about to begin.
Bonnie didn't join the discussion. As a 30-year-old woman, she felt it was better not to hang out with a group of young girls and boys, as it would only make her look older.
Bonnie knew that she was just an ordinary person with average looks, and that her advantage was her round face, which made her look younger.
In novels, time-traveling characters are always portrayed as having high looks and almost no flaws, but she isn't like that. Her once flawless skin is gone, her oval face is gone, and her tan-resistant constitution is gone too.
She has a round face, which is not aggressive, and her height has also decreased. Her skin is naturally wheat-colored, which is not the typical fair-skinned, beautiful, and long-legged look.
Fortunately, Bonnie has a strong personality and has been through life and death, so she no longer cares about some things.
I glanced at my watch; the results—the written test results—would be out in about ten minutes.
Bonnie changed her posture; her legs were a little numb from standing.
More than ten minutes later, a staff member came out with a piece of paper covered with names and posted it on the bulletin board outside.
"They're out, they're out..."
Everyone was excited and wanted to see the result, but there were too many people, and it was so crowded that no result was given for a while.
"Quiet down, don't push. I'm going to announce the results. Listen carefully and see if your name is on the list. Those who are selected will go in for the interview, and those who are not selected will leave."
After the stern-faced staff member finished speaking, everyone quieted down, their ears perked up, afraid of missing their own name.
Each name was read three times. The first name read was that of a male comrade. A total of twenty names were read. These were the top twenty applicants.
All the boys whose names were called went in for the interview, while the remaining boys looked disappointed but were reluctant to leave.
The staff continued reading the list of female comrades. Bonnie was the first one. Upon hearing her name, Bonnie walked towards the Children's Palace.
Once all forty people had gathered outside the interview room, another woman came over with a list and started calling out names. Those whose names were called went in for the interview.
Bonnie was the first to go in. There were three gay men and one woman sitting inside, all of them looking quite serious.
"Hello, my name is Lin Baoni."
Bonnie introduced herself first, going through the formalities.
Several people asked some professional questions about swimming, diving, first aid, and crisis management.
Bonnie felt she had answered well; these things were ingrained in her, and she was very calm and not nervous.
"Go outside and wait for news. Let the next person in."
Bonnie couldn't discern the quality of her presentation from the three interviewers' expressions, so she quickly left.
Forty people were interviewed for over an hour, but only ten made it to the actual assessment stage, one of whom was Bonnie. She breathed a sigh of relief.
Ten people were led into a training field that looked newly built, appearing particularly new within the old building.
Now, split into two teams, men and women, and go change your clothes. There are changing rooms over there.
Bonnie quickly changed into her swimsuit. It wasn't a sexy style; it had a pair of shorts with a short hem and a short-sleeved top, but the sleeves were so short they were negligible.
They are very comfortable to wear, and the fabric is nice.
After changing her clothes and putting them in her pocket, Bonnie went out.
One by one, everyone came out, dressed in all sorts of different clothes.
