Chapter 28 Gu Ye decides to return to Beijing for the New Year

As the days passed, another year came to an end. Gu Ze called Gu Ye several times, urging him to come back for the New Year.

Finally, Grandpa Gu called, and Gu Ye couldn't refuse, so he decided to return to Beijing.

When Gu Ye got home from get off work that evening, after much hesitation, he decided to talk to Bao Ni about the Gu family's situation.

“Bonnie, Grandpa called again today, urging us to go back for the New Year. I’ve been thinking about it and I think I’ll take you back with me.”

“Okay, if you’ve thought it through, I don’t care. If you go back, I’ll go back with you. If you don’t go back, I’ll stay here with you. We’ll go back to my parents’ house for the New Year together. My family doesn’t have much else, but we have a lot of people, so it’ll be very lively during the New Year.” Bao Ni knew that Gu Ye had a knot in his heart, and she hoped that Gu Ye could face it directly and resolve his knot so that she wouldn’t be unhappy. But she wouldn’t force him.

"Since you've decided to go back, I'll tell you some things about my family so you're aware of things. That way you won't be in a passive position when you get there. But don't worry about anyone else, just live your life however you want. If anyone messes with you, just fight back, I'll back you up."

Gu Ye was afraid that the Gu family would gossip about Bao Ni's family background. They were a bunch of people who had no real skills but were certainly opportunistic.

"Do I, Lin Baoni, need you to back me up? In terms of strength, several people are no match for me, and in terms of eloquence, I'm no worse than anyone else. Don't worry, it's only me, Lin Baoni, who bullies others; no one has ever been able to bully me. If you don't believe me, you can ask around on the island; my name, Lin Baoni, isn't just for show."

Lin Baoni wasn't bragging. She was strong and wild since childhood, and on the island, she was invincible against everyone, whether they were big or small, boys or girls.

Looking at the smug Bonnie, Gu Ye's heart suddenly calmed down. He was no longer worried or afraid to face the people and things he disliked.

Gu Ye's mood improved, and he told Bao Ni about some old stories from their Gu family.

His grandfather, Gu Changfeng, was a veteran revolutionary who left home in his teens to join the army in the revolution. He fought in many battles, large and small, and made many contributions.

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, his grandfather was educated, came from a respectable family, and was rewarded for his merits. He eventually rose to the position of commander of the Kyoto Military Region, a high-ranking position.

The people Gu Ye hated most in the Gu family were his father, Gu Xiangdong, and his second wife, Xu Fang. Because of their relationship, his mother was driven to her death prematurely, something Gu Ye would never forgive.

After Gu Ye's mother passed away, Gu Ze and Gu Ye were left at their grandfather's house. Gu Xiangdong and Xu Fang were transferred out of Beijing by their grandfather, who also took five-year-old Gu Lan with him.

Gu Ye dislikes her younger sister Gu Lan, who is seven years younger than her.

Gu Ye's mother was in poor health at the time and unable to take care of Gu Lan. She was often bedridden and rarely got up to move around; the accident had damaged her health.

Gu Lan was cared for by Xu Fang. She was very close to Xu Fang, but she was a little afraid of her own mother. Gu Ye clearly remembered that when her mother wanted to hug Gu Lan, she hid behind Xu Fang in fear. Gu Ye vividly remembered the sad and upset expression on her mother's face at that time.

After Gu Lan was taken away, Gu Ye basically never saw her again. He also barely saw the three children Gu Xiangdong and his wife had later, and disliked them even more.

Gu Ye told Bao Ni that his grandfather had three sons. Gu Xiangdong was the eldest, and his second uncle died young. Gu's second aunt remarried less than two years later, leaving behind a son and a daughter, who also grew up in Gu's grandfather's house.

Grandma Gu felt more sorry for the two children who lost their father at a young age and whose mother remarried. Moreover, after Gu Ye's mother died from a disease caused by Gu Xiangdong's affair with Xu Fang, the scene of him confronting his father with a knife made Grandma Gu think that this child was too ruthless.

Whenever Gu Ye had a conflict with his second uncle's children, Grandma Gu would criticize him and give him a cold look. Perhaps because of Gu Ye, her most beloved eldest son had to leave Beijing and she hadn't seen him for several years, so she disliked Gu Ye even more.

Only Grandpa Gu and Gu Ze in the Gu family truly care for Gu Ye.

Gu Ze, as the eldest brother, strives to improve himself in order to protect Gu Ye from being bullied.

Gu Ze attracted a lot of attention because of the family line left by his mother. After graduating from university, he performed well and stayed by the side of the high-ranking official, serving as his bodyguard and secretary.

At the very center of power, Gu Ze is also a pivotal figure, especially in recent years, as he has taken control of the network of relationships left by his mother, giving him even more influence.

His sister-in-law, Shen Jiaqi, also came from a military compound and grew up with Gu Ze. They got married when they reached a certain age. There was no dramatic love story, just a perfect match.

In order not to hold his brother back, Gu Ye worked hard despite knowing that his grandfather and the others did not want him to join the army. He used his own strength to get into the military academy with excellent grades at the age of 15.

This is the basic situation of the Gu family. There's also Gu's third uncle, who doesn't serve in the military. Gu Ye also has an aunt who is married and lives in Beijing. Gu Ye has no feelings for any of them.

After listening to Gu Ye's stories, Bonnie summarized them and concluded that Gu Ye was unrivaled in the Gu family.

Bao Ni despised Gu Xiangdong, Gu Ye's father, for his infidelity with his wife's sisters while his wife was seriously ill, and had no respect for him. As for the mistress who stole her sister's boyfriend, Bao Ni looked down on her even more.

As for Gu Ye's younger sister, although she was young at the time, it was a fact that she had caused harm to their mother. Bao Ni wouldn't get close to her, nor would she deliberately cause her trouble. If they couldn't get along, they would keep their distance. But if Bao Ni wanted to seek validation from her, then Lin Bao Ni would have to show her what she was capable of.

Bonnie felt the Gu family was like a complex workplace with intricate interpersonal relationships, her only allies being Brother Gu and Sister-in-law Gu. Although Bonnie found it troublesome, she wouldn't back down. She was the kind of person who grew stronger with each setback; come on, the outcome was still uncertain!

Bonnie is rubbing her hands together, ready to make a big splash in Beijing and stir up some trouble.

Meanwhile, in Beijing, when the Gu family learned that Gu Ye was bringing his new wife back for the New Year, everyone had different expressions, but their hearts were filled with excitement.

Gu Ye, after all these years, you're actually coming back.

Some were gloating, some were nervous and scared, but very few were genuinely welcoming!

Bonnie didn't know or care about the reactions of the Gu family members.

Bonnie couldn't go empty-handed on her first visit; she knew the proper etiquette. She couldn't let them have the opportunity to say that their parents didn't raise their children well and didn't know manners.

Bonnie had prepared two options: politeness first, then force. She was ready to see what the other party would choose, whether through reason or force.

The island may lack other things, but it has no shortage of seafood. Bonnie didn't go to her secret base; that was reserved for her close friends and family.

We exchanged many items with relatives on the island team; everyone has a few of these, so it was easy to collect quite a few.

Bonnie has prepared a lot, so that if she upsets Bonnie, she'll have nothing left and can find an opportunity to sell it.

With everything prepared, the two were ready to go to war at any moment.
