Bonnie's main purpose was the small garden; she wanted to see what other flowers and plants were in it.
The small garden is quite large, but it has been neglected for many years and is overgrown with weeds, some of which are taller than a person. There are a few scattered flowers, but it's hard to tell whether they are wildflowers or flowers that were originally in the garden.
Bonnie brought a sickle and gloves, Liu Jiu and Xuan Yi each brought one, and San Qi and Xuan Hao were responsible for the short grass on the side.
They moved here in May and have been so busy that they haven't had time to think about this place.
Bonnie and Liu Jiu were very skilled at using the sickle, but Xuan Yi wasn't very good at it. Bonnie taught him how to use it and told him to be careful not to cut his leg.
Bonnie and Liu Jiu, two strong women, really didn't find this kind of farm work very interesting.
Gu Xuanyi hadn't even mastered how to use the sickle before the grass was all cut.
"Put the sickle aside and let these grasses dry in the sun. They can be used for firewood once they're dry."
The small garden looks much more spacious after the lawn was mowed; it must be more than half an acre. Now I can finally grow my own vegetables!
After clearing the weeds, Bonnie went out and bought several shovels, hoes, picks, and other tools.
Fortunately, supply and marketing cooperatives nowadays sell everything.
Bonnie and Liu Jiu were the main force, deep-plowing the soil. Gu Xuanyi learned to do it, while Sanqi and Xuanhao were responsible for picking out the grass roots from the soil.
Working together, the group finished most of the work by noon, and Bonnie took the four children to a nearby state-run restaurant for lunch.
In the afternoon, we did some final tidying up, breaking up large clumps of soil and spreading out weeds and roots to dry. We'll check back in a few days and find a way to get some fertilizer, as the soil is too infertile.
After locking the door, Bonnie took the children home. This summer vacation is going to be busy.
