When Bonnie woke up, she saw sunlight streaming through the gaps in the curtains and knew it was getting late.
I stretched and exclaimed, "Oh dear, my back!"
Bonnie felt a cramp in her lower back as soon as she moved.
He cursed her brother-in-law a few times in his heart, and then remembered what Sister-in-law Wei Hong had said: "It's true that some people are dying of thirst while others are drowning in floods."
Bonnie did a few stretching exercises, but perhaps because it had been so long, she had forgotten all the yoga poses she had learned before and couldn't remember them at all. Not just yoga poses, but many things in general were blurry in her memory.
Opening the window, a blast of cold air rushed in, dissipating the odors in the room.
Bonnie was exercising at home, while Gu Ye finished his work in the office. Remembering what Bonnie had mentioned, he picked up the phone and dialed a number. He wanted to meet with Han Ye.
"Hello, I'm looking for Han Ye."
"Wait a moment, boss, the phone is ringing, someone wants to see you."
A very young girl... Gu Ye's heart skipped a beat; he had a bad feeling.
Who's looking for me?
"I am Gu Ye. Do you have time to have dinner together tonight?"
"Gu Ye, what brings you to me? We haven't seen each other in ages. Shall we invite the others over for a get-together?"
Han Ye was quite surprised. He knew Gu Ye was very busy and knew a little about things. Before his father moved to the retirement home, he had mentioned that Gu Ye had performed meritorious service again. Although his position remained the same, his rank was different, and the old man's envy was too obvious.
"Stop looking, let's just the two of us. I need to talk to you about something."
"Okay, see you tonight."
Han Ye didn't know what Gu Ye wanted to talk to him about; it seemed quite serious. He decided not to think about it anymore and would find out that night.
"Brother Ye, want to come to my place tonight?"
"I'm not going. I have something to do tonight. You should calm down and think carefully about what you can and cannot say."
Han Ye ignored the young woman's pale face; he was also very annoyed.
After hanging up the phone, Gu Ye sat for a while and then dialed his home number.
"Honey, have you eaten? Are you feeling unwell anywhere?"
"I don't feel well anywhere. Listen to my voice. I don't even know how I'm going to explain to my uncle that I have a cold."
Bonnie rolled her eyes over the phone, then remembered that her brother couldn't see.
"Haha...this proves I'm capable! Honey, you should be grateful I'm healthy, how lucky you are!"
Gu Ye could imagine his wife's expression right now; her pupils must have disappeared, leaving only the whites of her eyes.
"Yes, I'm so happy, so happy that my old back is cramping."
"Haha... It's okay, I'll give you a massage when we get back, I'm a professional."
Gu Ye laughed heartily for a while, laughing away his previous depressed mood.
"Honey, I've made plans with Han Ye tonight. You don't need to wait for me for dinner. Go eat at your uncle's place."
"Okay, watch your tone and see what he says. Sigh, the child is almost graduating from college, right? There's nothing you can do about it."
Bonnie felt that if Han Ye had already taken that step, it wouldn't matter what anyone said.
"I understand. I'll see how things go. Sometimes, things are beyond human control. It's like the sky wanting to rain or a mother wanting to remarry.
"Honey, you need to exercise more! These back cramps can't go on! I think I can keep going for another twenty or thirty years, you can't hold me back!"
Bonnie's face flushed red instantly. Had her wild brother gone mad?!
With a thud, Bonnie put down the microphone.
"Ha ha……"
Gu Ye could picture his wife's face turning bright red with anger.
After laughing, I still couldn't understand why people couldn't enjoy their lives properly. It's always best to be with your original spouse; you care for each other and understand each other's needs.
If I can't figure it out, I'll stop thinking about it and we'll talk about it when we meet tonight.
At six o'clock in the evening, Gu Ye and Han Ye met at the agreed place.
"What would you like to eat? The food here is pretty good. I know you can't drink alcohol, so let's just eat vegetables today. I'll give my stomach a break too. Since I started working in the food business, I've hardly had a proper meal."
"Excessive drinking is harmful to health. Making money is important, but you can't trade it for your health."
“That sounds familiar; your sister-in-law always nags me like that.”
Han Ye poured himself a cup of tea, looking somewhat lost and dejected.
"Knowing your sister-in-law was worried about you, why did you still do that?"
"You know, that makes sense. She and your wife are such good friends. She wouldn't tell anyone else about something like this except your wife."
Han Ye downed another cup of tea, but it wasn't enough. He wanted to drink some alcohol, but after glancing at Gu Ye sitting opposite him, he gave up.
"Why? Putting aside the fact that you grew up with your sister-in-law and have been married for so many years, you can't do this just because you're looking after three children."
"Gu Ye, you've been in the army for so long that you don't know how much the outside world has changed. I think I'm quite capable, but I just didn't catch the right opportunity. I was over forty when I suddenly changed careers. It was really difficult at first, and I couldn't find my way. Later, someone from the same compound came out and, out of respect for my dad, he mentored me, and I slowly figured things out."
But when you need to use connections to get things done, you can't refuse the social niceties. If you're asking someone for a favor, you have to follow their rules. Drinking, dancing—I practically lived at the drinking table back then; I don't even remember the most I've ever drunk.”
Han Ye poured himself another cup of tea and downed it in one gulp.
"Why bring women into this when you're just drinking?"
"One wrong step can lead to eternal regret; one wrong step can lead to a series of wrong steps."
I drank too much that day and don't remember how I got home. When I woke up in the morning, I found myself in my bed.
