Zhao Yuan takes care of Bai Chaoyang at the hospital, and also helps out with Shi Tou, bringing him food as a side job.
Bonnie stayed home with her three children and barely had time to eat, while Gu Ye was busy at the military base.
There was really no other way, so Bonnie asked Bai Song to add the seasonings, little by little. He would add a little, taste it, and if it was bland, he would add a little more and taste it again. It took quite a while to add the seasonings to one dish.
Bai Song is very talented. After a few tries, he can get the hang of it. Now, he doesn't need to try many times anymore; he can usually get it right in two tries.
And so, one adult and three children began living together.
Bonnie isn't good at seasoning, but she can usually make most home-style dishes pretty well by copying their recipes. With Bai Song as her little helper, the four of them easily solved their three meals a day problem.
All the vegetables in the yard were gone; the seedlings had been uprooted by the typhoon. Bonnie had already turned the soil over and planted some spinach and bok choy, and also found some leek roots to plant.
Typhoons happen every year, and the islanders are used to it. A typhoon comes roaring in, and no one can stop it. After it circles around and leaves, it leaves behind a mess. People clean up the mess and go back to their lives as usual.
Vegetables can be replanted if they're gone, trees can be replanted if they're broken, and life can go on as long as people are still alive.
During that time, Gu Ye returned once, changed his clothes, and left in a hurry. Bao Ni didn't have time to ask him anything; he only left her with his back turned.
These past few days, Bao Ni hasn't gone back to her parents' house. Bai Yang is shy around strangers, and it wasn't until she finally settled in and stopped crying for her mother that Bao Ni dared not try to move her to another place. Bao Ni was also worried; she wanted to go check on her seaweed seedlings.
Two days later, Grandma came over.
"Bonnie, why haven't you been home for several days? Is something wrong?"
Grandma saw Bonnie and anxiously inquired about her whereabouts. Bonnie, who usually only goes home after two or three days, hadn't been seen for four or five days, and the family was worried. Luckily, her eldest granddaughter-in-law was off work today, so Grandma quickly came to check on Bonnie.
"Grandma, sit down and rest for a while."
Bonnie went inside and made a bowl of brown sugar water for Grandma, placing it in front of her.
"Nothing happened. Gu Ye has been too busy to be home these past few days. Zhao Yuan's husband was injured while saving someone and is in the hospital. Her child is staying at my house. Her little girl is shy around strangers, so I haven't been able to go out."
"It's alright, it's alright."
Grandma kept repeating, "May Goddess Mazu bless you! May Goddess Mazu bless you!"
"Grandma, how's the situation with the second team?"
"Sigh, don't even mention it. The newly appointed captain is dead, what else can we do? That's all there is to it. The team should take better care of her from now on, especially Zhu's wife, she's pregnant."
"The commune came to offer condolences, giving each family thirty yuan and telling them to take care of themselves. This isn't the first time; on our island, which family hasn't lost their life at sea!"
Grandma was depressed, thinking of her own father, who had also gone out to sea and encountered a typhoon, never to return. He left her mother alone to raise a group of children, and life was incredibly difficult for them.
"What about Zhu Zi's wife? Has she given birth?"
"What can we do if we don't have the baby? She's already six or seven months along. We can just have the baby and talk about it later. Her mother-in-law is a very kind person and won't mistreat her daughter-in-law. She can find another suitable man to live with later."
Bonnie didn't know what to say. Even in later generations, similar situations exist: the father dies in an accident before the child is even born. Few people have the courage to give birth and raise the child alone; many choose…
In this era, people choose to be born, whether they can survive is another matter. Nowadays, children are raised freely; as long as they are fed, they can live, they are raised by nature.
Bonnie can't say which is right or wrong; it's just a personal choice.
Grandma told Bonnie about what had happened at the fishing team these past few days. Bonnie's dad had led a group to repair the fishing boats and nets; after the autumn harvest, they would be going back to sea to fish. This accident wouldn't stop the fishing; everyone had their own mission.
"Grandma, could you and my mother come and help me look after the baby tomorrow? I have to go out for a bit."
"Okay, your mother and I will come over tomorrow, bringing Da Bao and the other two."
Grandma was relieved to know that Bonnie was alright, so she didn't stay any longer. Bonnie and her three children escorted Grandma to the gate of the family compound.
"Are you three going to play outside for a while?"
"I want to play."
Liu Jiu was the first to speak; she wanted to go play on the playground.
"I'll go too," Bai Song said, having not left the house for several days.
Bai Yang tugged at Bonnie's sleeve; she didn't really want to go.
Bonnie held Bai Yang's hand and walked behind her, letting Liu Jiu and the other girl run off to play.
"Baoni, is this Battalion Commander Bai's family?" A woman came over from the opposite side. Baoni recognized her; they had crossed the sea together.
"Yes, Battalion Commander Bai's daughter, she looks a lot like her father."
"That's right, every girl looks just like her father. It worries me so much. My eldest daughter looks exactly like her father. I'm worried about what will happen to her in the future."
Bonnie recalled her husband, describing him as a ruthless and cunning man.
"Sister-in-law, you're exaggerating. Your eldest daughter is just a bit big and doesn't look like her father."
The girl does resemble her father somewhat, but she's several levels below Li Kui—just a few dark spots and prominent body hair.
“Oh, Bonnie, only you would say that.”
This is her own mother, constantly criticizing her daughter. Didn't she see her daughter standing angrily behind her?
"Cough cough..."
"Baoni, are you feeling unwell? Do you have a cold? Go home and drink some ginger water. Your body isn't strong enough. Look at my daughter, she's so healthy, she rarely gets sick, she's in great shape."
