Chapter 30: Catching Bamboo Rat (1/2)

Chapter 30: Catching Bamboo Rat

Because he ran into Qin Zhilin in the black market, Qin Qing didn't dare to stay in the town any longer. He took the sugar coupons he got from Shen Kuo and bought two taels of rock sugar from the supply and marketing department, then hurried home.

The two girls entered the house one after the other.

Qin Zhilin followed Qin Qing carrying a half-full bag of cornmeal. He put the bag in the cupboard before he noticed and asked.

"Qingqing, I haven't seen you all morning. Where have you been?"

Qin Qing came over and opened the bag to take a look at the cornmeal that his mother carried back. It was obvious that it was not from the supply and marketing department. Most of it was dry and shriveled. It turned out that his mother also bought it on the sly.

Faced with Qin Zhilin's questioning, she lied without blushing or beating her heart.

"I went to Zhu Zhu's house. Her mother gave me some rock candy."

There were a few shiny rock candies lying in Qin Qing's palm.

"It's not good to always take other people's things," Qin Zhilin sighed silently in his heart. It was all because his family was not well off. He didn't know how to repay others when he got their things, so how could he dare to accept other people's kindness.

"Well, Dad, what are you doing..."

"The food at home is almost gone, so your mother asked me to buy some more from the town." He never mentioned anything about the black market.

Qin Qing helped to clear out the cornmeal and put it into a clay jar. Seeing that there was nothing else to do, he tiptoed back to the room.

I counted the money from the pork sold in the morning, plus the ten yuan from selling pork belly, the total was sixteen yuan and thirty cents. I spent thirty cents on rock sugar, which left me with exactly one round number.

Qin Qing secretly hid the money in the bottom layer of the wardrobe in case of emergency.

Then he left the house and came to the kitchen, where Qin Zhilin had come out again. She chopped up the wild vegetables that Zhu Lihua brought back, mixed them with cornmeal, and kneaded them into standard round cakes.

He lit the fire to heat up the stove, added water to boil the dried mushrooms, and put seven or eight slices of pork liver into it, so that it had some meaty smell. Seeing that no one was at home, Qin Qing carefully brushed some oil on it and put the pancakes one by one on the edge of the pot, then roasted them on low heat until golden brown.

He squatted in front of the stove and watched it.

Just as noon arrived, the two brothers rushed into the yard, and from the yard came the sound of splashing water and the sighs of stones.

“It’s so cool!”

"You kid, you're all sweaty and you just take a cold shower. Be careful not to get heatstroke." Zhu Lihua, who was walking behind, said with a hint of reproach.

"Mom, you're too lazy to take care of him." Goudan had already collapsed on the bench exhausted. He rolled his eyes when he heard this. His younger brother was used to doing things without considering the consequences.

Shitou stuck out his tongue, too lazy to listen to their long-winded speech, and ran to the kitchen.

"Qingqing! Is the meal ready? Wow, it smells so good..." As soon as he opened the kitchen door, a unique aroma of meat and fungi wafted into his nose, and Shitou was intoxicated by it.

"It's mushroom soup." She brushed off the ash on her trouser legs, stood up and lifted the lid of the pot to prevent it from being too hot when she ate it later.

Shi Tou came over quickly.

In addition to the big pot of mushroom soup, there were ten corn tortillas stuck around the pot.

He suddenly felt that the glutton in his stomach was aroused.

"Can we have dinner now?" someone asked impatiently.

Qin Qing took out porcelain bowls from the cupboard, washed each one clean, and poured soup into them.

Then she picked up the stuck corn tortillas and put them into the basket. She pinched her ears because they were so hot. Shitou saw this and hurried to help, bringing the food out without stopping.

Rarely positive.

Even Qin Zhilin joked, "The sun rises from the west."

When they saw the big pot of fragrant soup and corn tortillas on the table, everyone finally understood.

Zhu Lihua glanced at her husband secretly and ladled the hot soup onto everyone, giving each person exactly two slices of pork liver, except for herself, who got a tiny, thin piece.

Qin Qing quickly swapped his mother's bowl with his own. Zhu Lihua just put the pig liver in her bowl, and Qin Qing picked up some mushrooms with one hand and stuffed them into his mouth, mumbling, "I don't like pig liver. It smells fishy."

This is true. Although pig liver that has not been processed carefully is nutritious, it has a bit of a fishy smell. Most people would stir-fry it, but modern cooking oil is a precious commodity, so this is not a good idea.
