Chapter 31 The Mysterious Old Man

Guan Yuxi scooped up a handful of yellow earth and scattered it into the grave.

Shovelfuls of soil were slowly used to cover the coffin.

A blood-red flag the size of a plate was placed firmly on the coffin and quickly disappeared into the ground.

Guan Yuxi was startled, her lips trembling as she silently said "thank you" to Minister Zhao.

Minister Zhao shook his head and pointed to the white-haired old man in the distance.

Guan Yuxi bowed to him from afar.

The old man waved his hand slightly and walked away with faltering steps.

Guan Yuxi couldn't help but burst into tears again, but she could no longer cry out loud.

History is but a memory, time has left its mark.

Grandpa sacrificed himself for the cause he loved.

I only hope that the white-haired old man, who has been studying diligently for so long, can hold on until the dawn is just around the corner.

She knelt down devoutly and kowtowed three times to her grandfather in farewell.

Then I bowed three times to all the gods and Buddhas in the sky.

May they bless all the lovely people of this great nation, granting them long lives, good health, and freedom from illness and disaster.

Leng Lie helped Guan Yuxi home.

He placed Grandpa Guan's portrait on the table and respectfully kowtowed three times.

Guan Yuxi stared blankly at the old man's photo.

A sense of absurdity arose in my heart.

The confusion in her eyes deepened. "Tell me, why is the world like this?"

Others who transmigrate have systems and cheat codes, they can show off, slap faces and crush scum, get rich and get involved with big shots.

And what about her?

His grandfather was his only relative, but he couldn't save him!

"Grandpa sacrificed himself for the beliefs in his heart."

We should be happy for him.

Leng Lie hugged her tightly from behind and gently kissed her hair.

Are you happy?

Thinking of Grandpa's eyes, which he refused to close completely.

Guan Yuxi felt a bitter taste spreading through her, and her heart felt heavy.

"One day, the old man's medals will be laid out in the sunlight and receive the treatment he deserves."

Minister Zhao bowed solemnly.

Guan Yuxi looked at him with clear eyes, "Uncle Zhao, I have no interest in knowing so-called secrets."

I just want to ask one question: Did you manage to save what Grandpa risked his life for?

Minister Zhao's face was somewhat ashen, but he nodded solemnly, "You can make any requests you have."

I will try my best to fulfill your request.

If that's not enough, I'll report it to my superiors..."

She was unable to fulfill her filial duties while her grandfather was alive.

Grandpa is dead, does she still want to tarnish his reputation?

Guan Yuxi interrupted him, "I appreciate Uncle Zhao's kindness."

I'm doing fine, I don't need anything.

Minister Zhao glanced at her, then at Leng Lie, and took his leave.

Days passed, one after another.

After Grandpa Guan passed away, it seemed that nothing had changed in Lengjiagou Village.

It seems like everything has changed.

Leng Hongxing has completely disappeared.

The old hag moved a stool and sat in the courtyard every day, cursing Bai Mei.

They said she was a barren hen, and that she had harmed her own grandson.

After losing his only son, and thinking about the death of Old Master Guan, Village Chief Leng secretly searched for him for a few days before giving up.

Whenever he had free time, he would drag Bai Mei back into the house and diligently work on his wife's belly, hoping she would give him a son as soon as possible.

Guan Yuxi's life has also changed completely.

From that pristine, innocent village beauty to the rich and beautiful.

She became like the favored young wives in the village, bringing water and food to Leng Lie every day when he went to the fields.

Occasionally, she would also enthusiastically go down to the fields to help him with some farm work.

Completely ignoring the cold, helpless, and protesting gazes.

Bai Qin approached Guan Yuxi several more times.

Before they could even reach her, they would either twist their ankle, fall into the water, or be chased away by a dog.

On this day, a group of special guests arrived in Lengjiagou.

A military vehicle drove directly to the Guan family's doorstep.

The little white dog circled the car once, then ran off barking.

Even though the big black dog was brave, it didn't dare to get too close.

Guan Yuxi was cooking in the kitchen, and the aroma of the meat and vegetables was mouthwatering.

She came out to greet them upon hearing the sound.

"Uncle Zhao? Please come in and have a seat."

Guan Yuxi warmly greeted Minister Zhao and the others.

Minister Zhao nodded slightly and ushered the tall, white-clad old man into the house.

He was the last to leave.

The elderly man in white, dressed in a blue-gray Zhongshan suit, appeared reserved and unassuming, yet possessed an extraordinary air about him.

He smiled kindly at Guan Yuxi, "Old Guan often mentions you. You are very good, even better than he described in his letters."

Guan Yuxi raised an eyebrow and brought out the steaming hot milk tea, pumpkin pastry, and other dishes.

"The food will be ready soon, please have a seat."

"Guests from afar are honored; let's talk about everything after we've eaten."

Her gaze swept over the two imposing attendants, then she smiled and withdrew.

"Dahei, go and call Brother Lie back. Tell him that we have a distinguished guest."

Guan Yuxi worked quickly and efficiently, bringing out all the dishes and late-night snacks she had prepared for dinner.

An elderly man in white robes, exuding an extraordinary air, stood before the portrait of Master Guan.

He silently lit an incense stick, and upon meeting, he found two prayer cushions neatly arranged before him, which pleased him greatly.

He stroked the portrait, unable to hide his sorrow and heartache.

He knelt down on one knee.

Minister Zhao and his entourage were all shocked.

He didn't stand up until most of the incense stick had burned down, and said to Minister Zhao:

"That girl is indeed exceptionally intelligent."

Minister Zhao bowed respectfully to him, saying, "It is her honor to receive your praise."

The old man in white gently shook his head, smiling but saying nothing.

Leng Lie entered the house through the back door.

Guan Yuxi fetched water for him to wash his hands, "He's an old acquaintance of Grandpa's."
