Chapter 54: An eye for an eye. (1/2)

Zhong Wanwan was actually amused by Wang Da Niang's shamelessness. She came up and immediately started spreading cotton. Who did she think she was?

She can't use it yet; she doesn't even have enough money to spend. Whether she needs it or not, she should at least share some with her.

Zhong Wanwan slapped her thigh dramatically and leaned closer to Aunt Wang, saying:

"Aunt Wang, you're from Wanglin Village? I heard that Wanglin Village had a bumper harvest this year. Your family must have received a lot of grain this year!"

Speaking of this, Aunt Wang was quite proud. She had seven sons, and except for her youngest son, all of them earned full work points, so the family received plenty of grain.

Of course, in order to get wives for her sons, Granny Wang sold all the fine grains on the black market.

That's barely enough to pay the bride price and settle the fourth son's marriage.

The marriages of her fifth son, sixth son, and her most beloved youngest son are still nowhere in sight!

Today she went to buy fabric and cotton because the woman wanted a cotton-padded coat made, so she wanted to buy some cotton.

Because her family didn't have cotton coupons, Aunt Wang went to the black market to try and buy cotton.

When they arrived at the black market, Aunt Wang complained that the cotton was too expensive and didn't buy any.

Seeing Zhong Wanwan's cotton made Aunt Wang's eyes light up. She thought that Zhong Wanwan, a young girl, would definitely be too embarrassed to refuse her, which was why she said those things earlier.

Aunt Wang said proudly:

"What else is there to say? The old lady has seven sons, all of whom are obedient and capable. This year, when it comes to the grain distribution, my family has one of the largest share in our brigade!"

Zhong Wanwan said with a smile:

"Aunt Wang, that's perfect! My family doesn't have much grain to go around, could you spare me some of the fine grains?"

Aunt Wang shifted her position further into the seat and chuckled dryly:

"Comrade, don't joke with me. Although my family gets a lot of grain, there are also many people, all of them are young men. There isn't enough grain for them!"

Zhong Wanwan sneered:

"Aunt Wang, weren't you the one who started the joke?"

"It's getting cold, and everyone is short of cotton. How come it's become that I can't use it all and I should give it to you instead?"

Aunt Wang said awkwardly:

"You've got too much! If you put a little less cotton in each garment, how come you can't even give me a cotton-padded coat? I'm not taking yours for nothing; I'll give it to you at the supply and marketing cooperative's price!"

"It's these cotton coupons. I'm a little short on them, so I'll leave them for now. When I have more cotton coupons, I'll definitely give them to you first. I'm not one to do that kind of thing!"

Zhong Wanwan imitated Granny Wang's mannerisms and said:

"Look at what Aunt Wang is saying. Your family has so many people. If each family eats a little less, why can't you spare some rice and flour for me, a young girl? I won't take Aunt Wang for nothing. I'll give it to Aunt Wang at the price set by the grain station!"

"It's these fine grain coupons. I don't have any on hand yet. Once I've saved up enough, I'll definitely give them to Aunt Wang first. I'm not the kind of person who eats grain without receiving grain coupons!"

Seeing that Zhong Wanwan didn't agree to sell her cotton, and kept trying to get a share of rice and flour, but refused to give her fine grain coupons, Aunt Wang said unwillingly:

"Hey, how can you be so shameless? You don't have any grain coupons at home, yet you want to eat fine grains?"

"Any family that marries a wife like you is really doomed. You're as skinny as a stick, you can't do any work at all, and you still want to eat and drink well? I think you're dreaming of marrying a wife, you're just having wishful thinking!"

Zhong Wanwan replied calmly:

"I bet Granny Wang has been dreaming a lot too. She wants to wear a cotton-padded coat without cotton coupons?"

"Your skin is even thicker than mine. Do you need to wear a cotton-padded coat in winter? Just peel your skin off and stick it to your body, wouldn't that solve the problem?"

"Being Wang Da Niang's daughter-in-law is really unlucky. The family doesn't have a single cotton ration coupon. How miserable must they be in winter? They must have been blind for eight hundred lifetimes!"

Aunt Wang gained nothing and even got scolded. Angrily, she pointed at Zhong Wanwan and said:

"You young woman, don't you know what it means to respect the elderly and care for the young? No matter what, I am your elder, how can you talk to me like that?"
