“Yes, we were all taken in. Grandpa and Grandma are kind-hearted; they didn’t want us to starve, so they took us in, even though they themselves weren’t getting enough to eat.” Sanwa’s eyes reddened as she thought of her grandfather’s health. “Sister, do you think good people in this world will be rewarded?”
"Yes, I will." Lu Zhixia sympathized with the child's plight and, seeing the old man she had never met before, took out some money from her wallet.
“Take these back and give them to Grandpa.”
Sanwa quickly stepped back a few paces. "Sister, I can't take your money. Grandpa taught us that we can only take what we are entitled to, and we can't take what we are not entitled to."
“Your grandfather is a good man, teaching you such good principles.” Lu Zhixia had previously suspected that these children were picked up by idle people and then made to sell things to earn money, but now it seems that this is not the case at all.
Sanwa said, "Everything I know was taught to me by my grandfather, but he's sick now. Erni said they've raised enough money to take him to the hospital."
"Erni?" Lu Zhixia thought this name should be a girl's name.
“Erni is our eldest!” Sanwa said proudly. “She was the first child that Grandpa picked up.”
"Erni, is it a girl?"
"Yes, she is the older sister."
"So what's your name?"
"My name is Sanwa."
"Don't you have surnames?"
"Grandpa said we are unregistered residents and can't get registered, so we can only be called by these names for now. When we grow up, we can choose our own names."
“Your grandfather is right.” Lu Zhixia stuffed the money in her hand into the child’s bag again. “You must take this back and tell your grandfather that it was from me, and ask him to take good care of you.”
Sanwa sensed the kindness and knew the older woman was a good person, but if he accepted the money, he would definitely get scolded when he got back.
"But Grandpa and Erni both told me not to take money from people casually."
Lu Zhixia said, "Could you give my sister your address? I'll come visit you after I finish what I'm doing. That way, I won't feel like an outsider anymore."
Sanwa thought for a moment and decided it wouldn't hurt to tell them. "We live on Tonghua Road in that abandoned house. If you ask around and find out which house is haunted, they'll tell you where it is."
He didn't take the money out of his bag, which was a selfish act on his part, because the family desperately needed money. His grandfather's illness was like a bottomless pit, and they had to work hard to earn money to save his life.
He went out to sell ice cream without telling anyone. He lied to them that he earned the money by selling scrap metal, otherwise he was afraid that Erni and the others would worry, since the train station area was a mixed bag.
As for how to get the money out, just say you found it. Anyway, they need the money so much right now, they're unlikely to return it!
Lu Zhixia hadn't expected their living conditions to be so harsh. Unfortunately, she didn't have much money on her, and if she wanted to withdraw more, she would have to go back to the local area. So, she could only help them in a very limited way. She could only wait until she finished her business and then come back to check on them.
If what the little kid says is true, then let's help them out!
She wanted to do good deeds and pray for her daughter, whose whereabouts were unknown!
"The tickets are bought." Gu Lingxiao said as he walked over.
He saw a very young child next to him carrying a bag.
"Uncle, would you like some ice cream?" Sanwa asked solicitously.
Gu Lingxiao instantly guessed what was going on, so he took out some money from his pocket.
How many ice creams do you still have left to sell?
“There are about 10 left!” Sanwa said.
Gu Lingxiao took out two yuan and gave it to the child, saying, "Wrap them all up for me."
Sanwa quickly took the money, then found the corresponding 46 cents, packed the ice cream into a bag, and handed it over with both hands.
"Thank you, Uncle!"
"You're welcome." Gu Lingxiao took the bag. "The ice cream is sold out now, so you should head home early!"
"Okay." Sanwa nodded obediently, then waved to them, "Goodbye, sister and uncle!"
Gu Lingxiao's smiling face froze, and he turned to Lu Zhixia, asking, "This child calls you 'sister' and me 'uncle'!"
"Hahahaha!" Lu Zhixia belatedly realized what was going on and, after laughing, said, "Don't take it to heart with a child. He probably calls all women 'sister' when he buys things because men don't buy snacks like ice cream often. Besides, it's really not appropriate to call you 'brother'."
“That makes sense. I won’t hold it against him then.” Gu Lingxiao looked at the ice cream in the bag. “The morning train tickets were sold out, so I could only get afternoon tickets. But this time we bought sleeper berths in the same carriage, so we don’t have to exchange tickets with anyone else.”
Lu Zhixia said, "Then let's find a place to eat. I'm hungry too."
Gu Lingxiao: "Okay, let's give some ice cream to someone while we're at it. We can't possibly eat all of this."
Lu Zhixia laughed again, "Then why did you buy so many?"
Gu Lingxiao: "Isn't it just like you? I felt sorry for that child and wanted him to go home as soon as possible."
Lu Zhixia walked alongside him. There was a state-run restaurant not far away. She had slept for a while in the car and felt much more refreshed.
They arrived at the restaurant quickly, but there weren't many people eating there.
The waiter led them to the window.
"We have steamed buns, tofu pudding, and porridge for breakfast here. What would you like to eat?"
Gu Lingxiao looked at Lu Zhixia, "Would you like some porridge or tofu pudding?"
Lu Zhixia said, "Have some porridge for breakfast!"
Gu Lingxiao turned to the waiter and said, "Give us a steamer of beef buns and two bowls of porridge."
"Okay!" The waiter took notes.
Gu Lingxiao handed the bag to the waiter, "We just bought this outside. If we can't finish it, you can share it with everyone!"
