She thought of her husband, Zhao Zeyu, because she had gradually become self-conscious since her face was injured.
I quit my job and have no source of income, so I always lock myself at home.
Before, I could manage him with a clear conscience, but now I don't even have the courage to do so.
"Do you have any idea who it is?" Lu Zhixia asked.
Tao Lihua looked up. "I suspect it's my husband."
Lu Zhixia was not surprised by her answer. Such long-term poisoning could only be done by someone close to her in bed.
"Let's do this for now. I'll check your house first. Take out everything you usually use."
Tao Lihua nodded, and then she took out all the things she usually used and put them on the kang (a heated brick bed).
From small items like bowls and chopsticks to everyday condiment jars, and finally even the clothes, bedding, and pillows that I wear, I took them all out.
Lu Zhixia picked up and smelled everything, but found nothing wrong with the food and household items. She then started smelling the clothes, the blankets, and finally the pillows.
Her grandfather once told her that each medicinal herb has its own unique flavor, but she never actually learned about it.
However, she felt that as long as she did it, there would be flaws. In the end, she couldn't smell anything by smelling it. She groped for the pillow in her hand and suddenly found something very hard.
She looked up at Tao Lihua and questioned her.
How long have you been using this pillow?
"I've used this pillow for so many years, is there something wrong with it?" Tao Lihua has calmed down now. If her husband really poisoned her, why didn't he kill her?
Perhaps the pustules on my face are simply caused by a medical condition.
After all these years of being each other's bedmate, how could someone be so cruel?
"Can I open it?" Lu Zhixia asked.
“Fine, you can dismantle it if you want!” Tao Lihua said.
Seeing the hesitation on her face, Lu Zhixia's eyes showed a hint of doubt. Perhaps that's just how people are.
After calming down, I started to brainwash myself again, overturning my previous thoughts!
After cutting open the protective strip with scissors, everything inside was poured out.
The inside was made of rice straw husks, which had become moldy after sleeping on them for a long time, making them both pungent and smelly.
Lu Zhixia coughed twice and then looked down and turned her hands over to see what the hard object she had just touched was.
"This pillow really needs to be replaced." Tao Lihua was a little embarrassed, as she seemed to have found nothing wrong and had even made the person choke.
After searching for a while, Lu Zhixia actually found several hard objects. The objects were not very big, about the size of peanut pieces.
If you don't carefully explore, you won't even notice that there are one or two—counting the last one, there are exactly twelve.
To be on the safe side, she asked again.
Did you put this in your pillow?
Tao Lihua stared incredulously at the dark object. "No! This wasn't there when we made the pillow."
Lu Zhixia lowered her head and smelled it; she wasn't sure what kind of medicine it was.
"Let's go out and find a traditional Chinese medicine doctor to see what kind of medicine it is. Also, you should take the medicine you usually take to the doctor and ask him if it's poisonous or has any adverse interactions!"
"Okay, I've got it." Tao Lihua's heart was in turmoil; this matter was beyond her comprehension.
So they put the pillow back to its original state.
Then Tao Lihua put on a mask, locked the door, and led them out.
She only spoke after leaving the courtyard, "I once saw two traditional Chinese medicine doctors. They both told me to avoid certain foods and prescribed some calming medicine for me to drink, and told me to sleep more to get more sleep."
Lu Zhixia said, "Logically speaking, stable sleep is indeed good for your body, and they did nothing wrong."
Tao Lihua: "Shall we go ask those two traditional Chinese medicine doctors first?"
Lu Zhixia said, "It's entirely up to you. If they can't tell us, we can find another doctor."
Tao Lihua clutched her handkerchief tightly, hoping their guesses were wrong. If they were true, she wasn't sure what she could do.
We soon arrived at Huichuntang, a traditional Chinese medicine clinic. It looked antique and must have been there for at least several decades.
A waiter was dispensing medicine, while the doctor sat at the very back, with three people queuing up to have their pulses taken.
Looking at the huge Chinese medicine store, Lu Zhixia gained a new understanding of traditional Chinese medicine.
Soon it was their turn.
The senior doctor immediately recognized the woman who had come to see him several times before. He didn't rush to take her pulse, but instead asked…
"Did you take the medicine I prescribed for you last time?"
"Doctor, you still remember me?" Tao Lihua was pleasantly surprised.
The old doctor stroked his beard. "Of course I remember. You said it was one of the strangest cases I've ever encountered in my life. No matter how I examined you, I couldn't figure out why you were sick."
Lu Zhixia nudged Tao Lihua's arm, signaling that she could show the item to the doctor.
Tao Lihua then realized what was happening, opened the handkerchief in her palm, and placed the item in front of the old doctor.
"Open your eyes and look at what this is."
The old doctor suddenly stood up. "Where did this thing come from?"
Judging from the old doctor's expression, Tao Lihua knew he recognized this substance.
"I want to know if this stuff is poisonous?"
The old doctor picked up a piece, smelled it, and finally nodded in confirmation. "This thing is extremely yin and cold. Long-term contact will make a person's body worse and worse, and wounds will not heal easily. It damages the internal organs; it's a slow-acting poison—"
At the same time, considering the patient's symptoms, a bold guess formed in his mind, so he looked up and asked,
