Chapter 186 Going to School

He placed the telegram on the table. He had served in the army for nearly 10 years, and the number of times he had seen his parents could be counted on one hand.

When Dad came last time, they only exchanged a few words and then parted ways.

I felt that they probably wouldn't interfere with my marriage; if they wanted to, they would have already done so. Thinking about this made me feel better.

——

Lu Zhixia and Su Lan made dumplings together that evening, with chive and egg filling.

Two tables were put together, and the whole family sat around them to eat, creating a very lively atmosphere.

This was the first time Gu Huailin had eaten with so many people. He had never realized that dumplings could be eaten in a whole plate, and that he could have as many as he wanted.

The vegetarian dumplings were delicious; he ate a whole plateful by himself.

No one gave him a meaningful look; everyone was just eating their own food.

After dinner, I went back to the house with my mother. The house was small, but very cozy.

Lu Zhixia picked out a set of clothes from the ones she had bought and held them up to the child's body.

"Luckily I planned to buy you clothes today, otherwise I wouldn't know what to dress you in!"

"Can I call you Mom?" Gu Huailin asked softly.

"Let it call out if it wants!" Lu Zhixia pinched the child's little face, probably the fleshiest part of his body.

"Mom!" Gu Huailin called out, then opened his arms and hugged her tightly. "I'm a child with a mother now! I'm so happy, so very happy!"

Lu Zhixia patted the child's back, then gently pushed the person away.

"I'm making you my son, it has nothing to do with your father. Whether he becomes my son or not, you're still my son!"

"Yes!" Gu Huailin replied loudly.

Lu Zhixia shoved the clothes into his arms, "You should be able to change your own clothes, right?"

"Okay!" Gu Huailin touched the brand-new clothes. Everything that happened today felt like a dream to him.

Dad came back, then the wicked nanny was arrested, and then he had a mother.

Lu Zhixia said, "Then I'll go get some hot water. You can wipe yourself down in a bit, and then we'll change into our little clothes and go to sleep."

Gu Huailin nodded obediently; he felt that life here was really good.

Lu Zhixia went outside and first went to the water room to get some cold water, then came back and poured some hot water to make sure the water temperature was right before bringing it inside.

I gave the child a clean towel and stood by watching him wash his face and wipe his body with it. The little guy did it in a very orderly manner.

He can do everything, except he's a little weak when wringing out a towel.

She had just wrung out the towel when she looked up and saw the child carrying a basin outside.

Not long after, he returned with an empty basin, his face beaming with a smile.

"Mom, I just greeted the neighbors, and they asked whose child I was. I said I was your child!" Gu Huailin said happily, looking up at his little face.

They all praised me for being very polite!

"Just say that if anyone asks you in the future. By the way, are you in school?" Lu Zhixia asked.

Gu Huailin lowered his head. "I did go to school before, but she helped me get a leave of absence."

Lu Zhixia was so angry she almost cursed again. Who did that woman think she was? She quickly and gently comforted the child.

"It's okay, we'll start from the beginning. Tomorrow I'll take you to school, explain things to the teacher, and then let you continue your lessons."

"Is that okay?" Gu Huailin asked excitedly.

Lu Zhixia said, "I am your mother now, so of course I have to take responsibility for your schooling."

Gu Huailin was so happy at the thought of being able to go back to school that he jumped for joy.

This is how a child should behave. Lu Zhixia went to the bedside and rearranged the bed. Luckily, they made a quilt for her. Otherwise, with the weather getting colder, the child would have caught a cold if covered with that thin quilt.

Su Lan came in from outside, carrying a small pillow in her hands.

"I found this in the closet. I had some leftover fabric that I made an extra pillow, and now it's perfect for you to use."

Lu Zhixia was delighted to see the delicate little pillow; it was a lifesaver. She walked over and took the pillow in her hands.

"So exquisite!"

"It's a bit small, so I put some rice husks inside!" Su Lan said.

"It's so light and soft, it'll definitely be a good sleeper!" Lu Zhixia handed the pillow to Gu Huailin. "Your auntie brought you a pillow, what should you do?"

Gu Huailin belatedly realized what was happening and quickly smiled, saying, "Thank you, Auntie!"

"Good boy!" Su Lan patted the child's head, then looked up at Lu Zhixia and said,

"Then I'll head back now. It's a bit chilly today, so don't open the windows tonight."

“I remember,” Lu Zhixia replied.

Su Lan looked around and saw that there was no one who needed her help, then turned and went home.

Lu Zhixia followed the person to the door and saw them go back inside. She then closed the door and locked it with a hidden lock. Turning back to the bedside, she saw the child already lying in bed, looking so well-behaved and adorable.

Lu Zhixia closed the window and then lay down on the bed.

"Mom!" Gu Huailin called out.

"Okay, go to sleep early, my good son." Lu Zhixia touched his little face.

"Can I lean against you to sleep?" Gu Huailin said softly.

"Of course!" Lu Zhixia casually pulled the child into her arms. "Alright, now you can close your eyes and go to sleep."

Gu Huailin obediently closed his eyes as instructed. He felt so happy that he didn't want to sleep, afraid that he would wake up and find everything gone.

After a long while, the child fell asleep. Lu Zhixia slowly withdrew her hand, covered him with a blanket, then picked up a book and read for a while until she felt sleepy, at which point she turned off the lamp and went to sleep.
