"It looks pretty good," Lu Zhixia said.
The fish looked back at them, then swam away quickly.
Gu Lingxiao: "Alright, we can go back now."
Lu Zhixia followed him back. "I was planning to stew a fish for my birthday, but I ran into one with a baby, so I had to release it."
Gu Lingxiao said, "Then I'm destined to miss out on this treat today, and it'll be the same no matter how many times I eat it in the future."
Lu Zhixia looked at the large reservoir and said, "There should be a lot of fish and shrimp in here."
Gu Lingxiao: "Don't even think about it if you don't bring any tools. You won't be able to catch it."
Lu Zhixia said, "Next time we have time, let's bring a fishing net and catch some."
Gu Lingxiao nodded, "Okay, I'll ask you out when I have time in the next couple of days."
With a splash, they couldn't help but look back.
A white lotus fish appeared on the shore, then fell silent after a few splashes.
Lu Zhixia went over to check, "This fish must weigh five or six pounds."
Then, looking at the water, the red fish did a somersault and swam away.
"Did it give this to us?" Gu Lingxiao asked.
Lu Zhixia picked up the fish. "I think so! This fish is completely dead. Let's take it back and eat it."
Gu Lingxiao put the basket on the ground, and Lu Zhixia threw the fish she was holding into it.
"I didn't expect such a pleasant surprise."
"Isn't that right?" Gu Lingxiao looked back at the water; there were no fish left to see. "Let's go! Let's go back!"
They walked back and soon reached the car.
Xiao Wang opened the car door and got out to help, only to find that a fish had been replaced in the basket.
"Hey, aren't you going to release fish? Where did this fish come from?"
Lu Zhixia said, "It flew ashore."
"Wow! You guys are incredibly lucky!" Xiao Wang put the basket back in the trunk and returned to the driver's seat.
Looking back, I saw that they were all seated, then I stepped on the gas and quickly turned the car around to head back.
Zhou An'an: "Tell me, how did that fish jump ashore? I've heard of waiting for a rabbit to run into a tree stump. If a fish jumps ashore, isn't that just walking into a trap?"
Lu Zhixia said, "Your analogy is quite apt. It really is like walking into a trap. But I feel that it was the red fish that gave us this silver carp to eat!"
Zhou An'an exclaimed, "Wow, if that's the case, then that fish must have become a spirit!"
Lu Zhixia said, "Maybe! We're fish keepers. The fish had a big belly, which means it was about to spawn. It would be too cruel to eat it! It's better to release it. In a few years, the reservoir will be full of fish like this, and we can eat them however we want."
Zhou An'an said, "To be honest, there's a guy in our office who loves fishing. He has a lot of fishing gear. If you have time, you can come over and go fishing."
Lu Zhixia said, "We'll talk about it when we have time. Anyway, I don't have much time lately."
Zhou An'an, "Are you going on another long trip?"
Lu Zhixia: "Yes, it's the same place this time, but the person we're looking for isn't quite clear this time."
Zhou An'an remembered that when she tried to get information out of her boss earlier that day, he mentioned that he could give her leave. She hadn't gone with him last time, so she couldn't miss this opportunity.
"Why don't I go with you? I'll bring my ID, and maybe I can find some colleagues to help us. In a place we don't know, we have to take shortcuts."
Lu Zhixia: "Do you have time off? Don't ask for leave just for me!"
Zhou An'an: "I asked my supervisor, and he said he could approve my leave."
Lu Zhixia said, "Then I'll set a date, and you can ask for leave. We've agreed that I'll cover everything on the way; you just need to bring your clothes!"
Zhou An'an reached out and took her arm, "Then wouldn't I be getting a good deal? I should still pay the same amount."
Lu Zhixia said, "You're not taking advantage of me at all. You're helping me out, so don't argue with me about the money. Let's keep things separate."
Gu Lingxiao saw all of this. He was worried that Lu Zhixia would travel far away alone, but now that Zhou An'an was with her, he felt much more at ease.
They soon arrived at the alley, got out of the car, and walked together toward the courtyard.
From a great distance, I could hear the voices of strangers talking in my grandfather's yard.
"I didn't expect you to have kept this yard so well."
"It's alright! I've been staying here for a while now, and this house has been a great help to me."
"Not at all! I feel very reassured with you looking after this house."
“I don’t think I’ll be able to come here as often next year, and you’ll have to ask the neighbors to take care of you.”
"I don't trust them with these keys, so I'll trust you with them instead!"
As Lu Zhixia and the others entered through the main gate, they saw a man in his fifties standing opposite Bai Ye. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants, a very standard cadre's attire.
When Grandpa Bai saw them arrive, he quickly introduced them to Zhao Guoqing, who was standing beside him.
"These children are the ones I'm going to entertain!"
