Chapter 292 Good Days
At this time of day, neighbors would usually be at home cooking, eating, and enjoying the stars and moon.
Tonight, neighbors who had done business with Bailu selling roasted chestnuts or who usually got along well with her all went for a walk along the riverbank and greeted her when they saw her from afar.
She was also holding homemade snacks like sunflower seeds, freshly roasted pumpkin seeds, and salted peanuts, and she shared them with her.
Bai Lu thanked her neighbors for their kindness and accepted a small handful of salt-roasted pumpkin seeds from Aunt Zhang.
She had never tried this kind of snack before. The salty, caramelized aroma suddenly whetted her appetite, and she wanted to give it a try.
As soon as she peeled a fruit, a big one and a small one stared intently at her hand, seemingly wanting to try it too.
"Sister-in-law, you said that good things should be shared as a family." Xiao Wei said earnestly, wanting to eat.
Bai Lu paused for a moment, then sighed softly and gave a small portion to the little guy: "Why didn't you take the one Aunt Zhang offered you earlier?"
"I want what my sister-in-law gives me." She said matter-of-factly.
"My sister-in-law is my family."
Bai Lu was handing the remaining half of the pumpkin seeds to Xiao Cheng when she heard this. She paused slightly, and then her large hand gradually came into focus. She could see the thin calluses on the tiger's mouth from holding the gun, which was the most complete interpretation of strength and security not long ago. She let go, and the pumpkin seeds fell one by one into his palm.
When you touch it unintentionally, the scorching heat penetrates your palm and strikes your soul, bringing your scattered thoughts back to focus.
Bai Lu subconsciously looked up.
Xiao Cheng did not meet her gaze, but lowered his eyes and kept his eyes on his palm, then casually withdrew his hand.
He slowly and methodically peeled the pumpkin seeds.
Hearing Xiao Wei's words from the side, Aunt Zhang laughed and said, "That's right, that's right. Your sister-in-law is your family. You used to be quiet and didn't like to go out. You were like a little taciturn person. If it weren't for your interest in the mother hen hatching chicks, I'm afraid I would never have been able to say a word to you in my whole life."
"White Dew has arrived, and you've finally turned back into a childlike person. It's so nice to have your older brother and sister-in-law at home. You know you have family behind you, so you're fearless no matter what you do..."
Xiao Wei agreed earnestly: "Big brother protects sister-in-law, sister-in-law protects me, and I'll protect the old hen!"
Realizing he'd forgotten something, he quickly added, "And the chicks."
Aunt Zhang exclaimed, "Oh! How long have they been hatched? How many chicks are there now?"
Xiao Wei: "It's been more than two months..."
As Bai Lu listened to Xiao Wei and Zhang Sao chatting about everyday things and ate the pumpkin seeds that Xiao Cheng peeled, the pent-up frustration in her heart silently broke open.
In the sweltering summer, it's so hot during the day that people don't want to go out. It's a little better at night, when an occasional breeze blows by, cool and refreshing, making every step feel exceptionally comfortable.
The night sky was also beautiful, with countless stars hanging over the river like a vast Milky Way, until the flames suddenly shot up.
"Fire!"
"Fire! Put it out quickly!"
A chaotic scene unfolded along the riverbank. By the time Bai Lu and Xiao Cheng arrived, the fire had already been extinguished.
There were no casualties, no major property damage, and the fire was extinguished at the fastest speed in history; it was put out with just a handful of river water per person.
Cause of the fire – barbecue grill.
The scenery was pleasant, the moonlight was bright, and oil lamps were propped up high by bamboo poles stuck in the ground, illuminating the grassy area by the river, where a group of men were criticizing each other around a barbecue grill.
"The food hadn't even been grilled yet, just a layer of oil had been brushed on, and the wire mesh was already catching fire. That's really weird."
"This is probably a fake!"
"I told you I wanted to buy the barbecue grill from the night market vendor, but you wouldn't listen. Now look what's happened, you're building your own barbecue grill out of bricks. No wonder the wire mesh is burning."
"What's wrong with your brain? Blaming the wire mesh fire on the barbecue grill? There are clearly two reasons. The owner's barbecue grill has such a small charcoal capacity that it takes forever to cook a skewer. Are you going to make your wife wait on an empty stomach? Obviously, this kind of large barbecue grill made of bricks is the most practical. It can hold more charcoal so that the food will cook faster!"
"Okay, okay, you're right, how did the barbed wire catch fire?"
"Exactly, how can you grill food if there's a fire?"
"Once the fire is out, we can start grilling."
"Okay, you're right. My brother and sister-in-law are here. Let's see what you've baked."
Just as Bai Lu and Xiao Cheng reached the barbecue grill, Luo Shiliu pulled a string of burnt things out of a large cardboard box on the ground and offered it to Bai Lu: "Sister-in-law, have some crab."
"This thing... is it a crab?" Bai Lu looked closely at the black charcoal in front of her and saw that it really did have eight legs.
Luo Shiliu thought Bai Lu didn't believe him, so he immediately explained, "I just rescued myself from a fire. Even pearls don't have such realistic roasted crabs!"
"Their grilled items were all burned by the fire. I was the best at grilling, and I managed to grill them successfully and salvage them, although Cheng Ge's skewers couldn't be saved."
The grilling time had been set long ago, and the plan was that Xiao Cheng and Bai Lu would be able to enjoy the first delicious skewers when they arrived.
result……
Xiao Cheng glanced at the eight charred and broken black legs in front of him and directly refused the "poisonous crab" on Bai Lu's behalf.
"I eat what I bake myself."
As soon as he finished speaking, he put his arm around Bai Lu and walked past Luo Shiliu, as well as Wang Hao and Xiao Dazhuang, who were watching the show with sympathetic expressions, and sat down on the long bamboo benches that had been made in front of the barbecue grill.
I took matters into my own hands and picked up a skewer of chicken wings and a skewer of shrimp from the large bamboo basket on the side table next to the barbecue grill.
Start baking.
Xiao Wei then took a skewer of shrimp and another skewer that looked like pork, probably lean pork. He sat down next to Bai Lu, rolled up his sleeves, and started learning how to barbecue from his older brother.
Luo Shiliu took a bite of the grilled crab with a heartbroken look on his face, but immediately spat it out and ran to the river to rinse his mouth.
Bai Lu felt sorry for him for three seconds, then, seeing the barbecue grills stretching for a hundred meters down the riverbank, she was a little shocked: "What day is it today? Why is everyone barbecuing by the river?"
