Chapter 10 Going to the City for a Divorce

The next morning, before dawn, there was a loud banging on the door.

Shiyue calmly tidied her clothes, then slung her small cloth bag over her shoulder and walked out of the house.

As expected, standing in the doorway was Sun Chengcai, whose face was gloomy.

Sun Cheng glanced at Shi Yue, who had finished tidying up, snorted coldly, and turned to leave.

He didn't say a word to her.

Shiyue doesn't care.

She turned around and carefully locked the door with a padlock, then followed behind Sun Cheng.

They had arranged to go to the commune today to get their divorce certificates.

It takes about two hours to walk from the Qianjin Brigade to the commune, so Shiyue got up very early to prepare.

Or rather, she didn't sleep at all last night.

In the first half of the night, Shiyue was a little anxious because she couldn't get back to that room, so she couldn't help but try again and again.

Then, in the middle of the night, she was suddenly able to get in again, and naturally she wanted to figure out what was going on.

When she finally figured it out and realized that she had just received a great opportunity and there were no mountain spirits or monsters, she breathed a sigh of relief and realized that it was almost dawn.

Naturally, there was no time to sleep anymore.

After finishing the remaining large chicken leg, Shiyue rinsed her mouth, washed her face, and it was time to set off.

Lost in thought, Shiyue followed Sun Chengcai slowly out of the brigade.

Before they even reached the village entrance, they saw two mule carts parked by the field, clearly ready to set off.

She couldn't help but stop in her tracks.

Their brigade only has two mule carts in total. Why are they out so early?

Sun Chengcai clearly knew about the mule carts beforehand. He called out to them and quickly walked to the first one, then got on.

Seeing this, Shiyue walked towards the car behind.

"Uncle Yousheng, why are you in town so early?" Shiyue greeted.

Shiyue was very self-aware. She didn't think that she or Sun Cheng could get the team to send a mule cart to accompany them. They didn't have that much influence.

Sure enough, upon hearing her question, Li Yousheng, who was dozing off on the bicycle frame with his neck hunched over, raised his eyelids and slowly said, "It's the educated youth who were sent to the city to be picked up."

"Educated youth?"

Shiyue was a little surprised: "Why are the educated youth coming at this time? There are still half a month until the New Year. Aren't they celebrating the New Year at home?"

Li Yousheng stretched his arms and sat up straight again.

He gestured for Shiyue to get in the car quickly, then said unhurriedly, "Who knows? If the team tells us to pick her up, we'll just go. We'll do whatever the leaders tell us to do."

“That’s right,” Shiyue replied.

Li Yousheng is the team's animal handler. He is also assigned to accompany the team when they go out on trips. He is known as a kind-hearted but taciturn person.

Shiyue didn't try to start a conversation. She found a sheltered spot in the car, tightened her cotton-padded coat, and curled up there to doze off.

Meanwhile, I continued to ponder what happened last night.

She now knows that the room and the curtain she received are rare treasures.

Time seemed to stand still in that room; things placed inside never spoiled. Not only did they not spoil, but they remained exactly the same when they were taken out.

Just like that big chicken leg.

This morning, it tasted just as crispy and piping hot as when I first saw it yesterday.

As for why she couldn't get into that room later, Shiyue figured it out: she saw a very small timer under the curtain.

The timer started counting down from sixty minutes, while the actual time was calculated from the moment she entered the space.

Shiyue felt that the recovery should have been done once a day.

That means she can only stay in that room for one hour a day, and if she exceeds that time, she will be kicked out.

The current uncertainty is whether this period of time can be accumulated.

She deliberately left ten minutes early in the evening to see if the total time for tomorrow would be sixty or seventy minutes.

But no matter what, Shiyue knew she had struck gold, a treasure fallen from the sky!

This gave her even more confidence in her future life!

With the mule cart, the time to get to the commune was reduced by half; they arrived before it was time to go to work.

Shiyue got off the mule cart, quietly looked around to make sure no one was paying attention, then took out a small paper packet from her bosom and stuffed it into Uncle Yousheng's hand.

"What is this?" Li Yousheng was startled!

"A little corn, grind it up when we get back and make pancakes for Shidan'er," Shiyue said softly.

"No need, no need." Upon hearing that it was about grain, Li Yousheng became even more resolute in refusing.

"You're a girl with no one to help you, so keep it for yourself!"

“I still have some at home. The team delivered all my rations yesterday, enough for me.”

Shiyue shoved the paper package into Li Yousheng's hand again: "Uncle Yousheng, you take it, don't let anyone else see it."

Seeing her determination, Li Yousheng had no choice but to take the paper package.

Then he said to Shiyue, "We're going to the county to pick you up. We'll be back by the afternoon at the latest. After you've finished your business, wander around the commune. Wait here for the rest of the afternoon, and I'll take you back."

Shiyue immediately smiled and her eyes narrowed: "Thank you, Uncle Yousheng, then I'll trouble you. I need to buy some things today, as I have nothing at home."

"What trouble? No trouble at all." Li Yousheng waved to her and drove the mule cart to catch up with the one in front.

After getting off the mule cart, Sun Cheng glanced at Shiyue.

He caught a glimpse of her smiling broadly as she chatted and laughed with the village's cattle herder.

He couldn't help but snort coldly, turning his head away, his eyes full of disdain.

He originally wanted to tell Shiyue that he was going to get something to eat and asked her to wait for him at the commune entrance, but seeing the situation, he was too lazy to say anything more.

At the same time, he was also afraid that if he left, the woman would run away again, and then what would be the point of all the torment he had suffered these past two days?

So Sun Cheng stopped eating, found a sheltered corner to stand in, looked up at the sky, and kept an eye on Shiyue out of the corner of his eye, not letting her out of his sight for even a moment.

Shiyue didn't think as much as Sun Chengcai did; she genuinely wanted to divorce him.

Seeing that the commune gate was not open, she found a place where she wouldn't get in anyone's way and stood there, thinking about what she needed to buy that day.

With the grain sent by the team and that bag of rice, she had enough food, but she still needed to buy some seasonings.

Salt, vinegar, and kerosene all need to be added.

Besides these, if you have baking soda, you should also buy some, since the New Year is coming soon and you should steam a pot of mixed flour buns.

Shiyue lowered her eyes in thought, unaware that a shadow had appeared in front of her.

She didn't look up until someone called her name.

Then she saw the propaganda officer she had met yesterday standing directly in front of her, smiling and asking, "Shiyue, are you here to get a divorce certificate with Sun Chengcai? Come on, come with me."
