At the breeding farm.
Lu Fangfang took a small basin, sprinkled a layer of bone meal into the cornmeal, and then cracked two eggs into it.
In order to help the quails at her farm grow faster, she went to great lengths and laid eggs on the only two eggs she had left.
Holding a pair of chopsticks, she vigorously stirred the contents of the small bowl.
She was busy when Wang Shufen arrived.
Seeing the girl stirring the cornmeal, Wang Shufen's eyes lit up and she hurriedly asked, "Girl, have the quails hatched?"
"Yes, I was busy all night and just gave them some warm water."
Lu Fangfang nodded, and she carried the cornmeal into the incubation room with Sister Shufen.
"Chirp chirp~"
"Chirp chirp~"
Wang Shufen looked at the baby quails in the brooder for a while, then closed the lid again.
Looking back at Lu Fangfang's dark circles, she couldn't help but laugh.
"These little things really know how to pick their time. Girl, you must be so busy. Give them to me now."
Lu Fangfang yawned; she hadn't slept all night and was really tired.
She handed the basin in her hand to Wang Shufen.
"Sister Shufen, the quails have just hatched, so we should feed them less for the first time. We'll have to work hard these next few days, feeding them small amounts frequently. We also need to gradually lower the temperature in the room so the quails can get used to it."
Wang Shufen nodded quickly, "Sister, I know everything, leave it to me, you go back and rest."
Lu Fangfang rubbed her eyes, and seeing that the little quails were eating, she went out with peace of mind.
Looking at the pile of bones in the yard, she didn't rush back and decided to deal with them first.
Carrying two iron buckets, she went to the river to fetch water, and when she returned, she set up a large iron pot in the yard.
Holding an iron shovel, she began scooping bones into the iron pot.
Wang Shufen was startled by the scene when she came out of the incubation room.
"Sis... Sis, what are you doing?"
"I'm cooking bones. Old Xu brought them over yesterday afternoon. I'm going to grind them into bone meal to feed the quails. Sister Shufen, could you help me start the fire?"
Wang Shufen swallowed hard, still a little scared.
The problem is that there are so many kinds of bones in this big iron pot, all sorts of them, and when they're all mixed together, it's... kind of creepy.
She put a few pieces of firewood into the stove, lit it, and hurried back to the incubator.
She should just keep watching the quail.
When Lu Fangfang saw Shufen's expression, she smiled and shook her head.
The stove was burning with leftover spruce wood from building the house, and the fire was blazing.
Soon, the large iron pot boiled, and an unpleasant smell filled the farm.
"Hmm."
Lu Fangfang frowned, turned around, and walked into the incubation room.
Wang Shufen poked her head out and curiously looked into the yard, then covered her nose and hurriedly closed the door.
With a somewhat complicated expression, she said helplessly, "Girl, how about we grind these bones into powder instead of boiling them?"
"That won't do, Sister Shufen. The bones need to be sterilized at high temperatures. These animal bones were picked up on the grassland, and we don't even know how they died. They can't be fed to the quails if they're not sterilized."
Wang Shufen scratched her head, surprised that even bones had such intricacies, and she secretly made a mental note of it.
Beside her, Lu Fangfang looked into the brooder box and saw that the cornmeal in the feeding box had all been eaten by the baby quails.
She caught a few quails, patted their bellies, and then nodded.
Feeding them small amounts frequently is good for the quails.
After a while, she covered her nose and went out to take a look. She saw a pile of cooked oil floating on the surface of the water in the large iron pot.
She stuffed some firewood under the stove and looked thoughtfully at the grease.
These fats include mutton fat, beef fat, horse fat, and lynx fat—it's a real hodgepodge.
It's definitely inedible, but since it's oily, it wouldn't be good to just waste it.
She found a melon ladle, and enduring the pungent smell, scraped the layer of oil from the top into a small basin.
Using chopsticks made from tree branches, she found a few suitable bones, picked them up, and threw them into the grease.
"Girl, what are you doing again? We can't eat this."
Wang Shufen poked her head out, looking outside, increasingly baffled by the girl's actions.
"Sister Shufen, don't worry, I wouldn't dare eat this."
After Lu Fangfang finished speaking, she suddenly thought of Yang Yufeng.
If this person were here, they might actually be able to take it back...
If someone gets sick from eating this, they might have to blame themselves.
Lu Fangfang was even more hesitant to let this person come to the farm.
After a while, the bones in the large iron pot were still cooking. She skimmed off another layer of oil and then put the lid on the large iron pot.
Seeing that the bones in the basin had soaked in enough oil, she went to the storeroom, took out a few bamboo cages, and threw the oily bones into them.
Carrying the cages out of the farm, she walked to the riverbank and threw several bamboo cages into the river.
"Thump~"
"Thump~"
She clapped her hands, looking quite satisfied.
The fat inside the bones is inedible for humans, but it's perfect for catching small fish, which is a way of making use of waste.
Well, she doesn't plan to eat the small fish she caught; she intends to dry them and feed them to the quail.
"Giggle~"
I stayed by the river for a while, but I didn't see any small fish at the bottom of the water. Instead, a flock of ducks came down the river.
Lu Fangfang looked on, somewhat helpless.
She picked up a few stones and threw them upstream.
"Bang, bang."
"Go away, go away, go away, don't come and cause trouble."
"quack."
The ducks were startled and quickly turned and swam upstream.
