It was even colder on the grassland back then.
"Sis, it's okay. If I get there too late, Old Xu might not be home."
Xiuxiu was in high spirits.
She harnessed the donkey cart, then went to the shed and got a straw mat, which she placed over the cabbage.
It's cold outside now; if you don't cover yourself up, you'll freeze right away.
"Alright then, go and come back soon. By the way, keep a low profile and don't let the people in the team see you. After all, Old Xu has been demoted."
Lu Fangfang gave Xiuxiu some instructions, then took off her military overcoat and draped it over Xiuxiu's shoulders.
Looking back, she called out to Xiao Hua and Xiao Zang Hu, asking them to keep Xiu Xiu company.
"Sister, I'm leaving."
Be careful.
Lu Fangfang stood at the gate of the courtyard and waved to her.
...
Xiuxiu sat on the sled, heading east.
On either side, Little Flower and Little Tibetan Fox were running around, and she looked quite excited.
Halfway there, a sudden gust of wind blew across the grassland. Xiuxiu tightened her military overcoat and called Little Tibetan Fox and Little Flower onto the sled.
Looking around, the grassland was covered in white, and there were no other animals in sight.
Xiuxiu simply focused on looking ahead and waited quietly.
Soon, the little wild donkey led her to the entrance of the sixth team's village.
It was that familiar mud house; she could see smoke rising from the roof from a great distance.
Knowing that Lao Xu was at home, she felt relieved.
When they reached the entrance to the courtyard, she dismounted from the sled, removed the wooden railing at the gate, and let the little wild donkey pull the things into the courtyard. Then she followed it in.
Little Flower and Little Tibetan Fox were also familiar with the yard and stayed close to her.
"Old Xu? Old Xu?"
Xiuxiu called out twice, but there was no response.
Little Flower couldn't wait any longer; it took the lead and rushed towards Old Xu's mud-brick house.
Seeing this, Xiuxiu quickly followed.
"Meow~"
Upon getting closer, Xiao Hua started scratching at the dark wooden door, where there were still traces of her previous scratches.
"Xiaohua, why are you scratching at people's door?"
Seeing this, Xiuxiu quickly stopped it, "Old Xu, are you home? Old Xu? Can I come in?"
The wind was blowing very hard outside, and her shouts were drowned out by the wind.
Regardless of whether Lao Xu heard her or not, Xiu Xiu knocked twice and then pushed the door open and went inside.
