At the doorway, the little wild donkey stretched its neck, sniffing intently at the aroma emanating from inside.
Zhuang Mingcheng happened to be coming back from outside. Seeing this, he slapped its rear end hard and then strode into the house.
"What are you cooking? It smells so good!"
"Goose eggs. The goose we bought for Chinese New Year laid a half-pound goose egg. Let's have a taste."
Zhuang Mingcheng was somewhat surprised to hear his wife's words.
He leaned closer to the wok and took a look. He found that there were quite a few cooked eggs inside; one large goose egg was equivalent to four or five chicken eggs.
"Then don't kill it. Keep it and feed it to lay eggs."
"By the way, I heard that Zhu Haiming from the Xi family gave birth at home?"
Zhuang Mingcheng took off his jacket and then walked to his wife's side.
"Yes, she gave birth. It's a boy. I heard he only weighed a little over four pounds. Maybe it's because the baby is small. It went relatively smoothly."
While drinking brown sugar water, Lu Fangfang told him about what happened at noon.
"Fangfang, if you have an upset stomach, you must have Xiuxiu run to tell me."
Zhuang Mingcheng massaged his wife's shoulders, still feeling a bit scared.
My wife is pregnant with twins, which is much more dangerous than a single pregnancy. The doctor advised that it's best to give birth in a hospital, unlike Zhu Haiming who gave birth in the family compound.
"Don't worry, I know what's important."
Lu Fangfang nodded; she wouldn't joke about her own health.
She had already made preparations. When she felt a slight stomachache, she asked Xiuxiu to go to the troupe to find someone, because she couldn't delay.
In the evening, the family made a point of trying the goose eggs fried in rapeseed oil.
Lu Fangfang thought the taste was alright, just a slight fishy smell, not much, and quite delicious.
She heard that goose eggs were good for pregnant women, so she ate a few more bites.
"Oh...ah..."
At the doorway, the little wild donkey peered out the window, drool practically dripping from its mouth.
Xiuxiu couldn't bear to watch any longer, so she poured some hot water into the pot and fed it the water used to wash the pot.
The little wild donkey didn't mind at all, and started drinking while wagging its little tail.
"This gluttonous donkey eats more than anyone else. Once the grass on the pasture turns green, we'll leave it at the ranch to graze. We can't let it ruin our grain anymore."
"Oh...ah..."
The little wild donkey twitched its ears, then raised its head and looked at Zhuang Mingcheng with displeasure.
Its hind legs were pushing against the ground, and it looked like it wanted to kick Zhuang Mingcheng and send him sprawling.
Zhuang Mingcheng: "..."
He tore off a small piece of pancake, added some scrambled goose egg, then walked to the doorway and stuffed it into the little wild donkey's mouth.
"Hurry up and drink your soup, what are you yelling about? I was just saying."
The little wild donkey chewed for a bit, snorted, and then obediently lowered its head to drink the dishwater.
Seeing this, Lu Fangfang couldn't stop laughing.
This gluttonous donkey is quite clever.
She felt something nudging her legs, and when she looked down, she saw it was the little Tibetan fox.
She picked up a goose egg with her chopsticks and placed it in the small bowl with a smile.
After dinner, she drew illustrations for the major espionage case for a while.
After working for more than two months, she is almost finished with the illustrations. Once she finishes the final touches, she can send them out.
Her royalties will be sent over then, and the family will be better off.
"Fangfang, get some rest."
"Okay, I'll go to sleep after I finish drawing this."
Lu Fangfang worked for a while and finished drawing the last scene.
She put down her pen, put away her sketches, and couldn't help but yawn.
She glanced at the kang (a heated brick bed) and saw that her husband was already asleep. She walked over and gently touched Zhuang Mingcheng's cheek.
He's been very busy these days.
Relations between China and the North have recently become very strained.
Two months ago, 69 Chinese students studying in Europe were beaten when they laid wreaths at Lenin and his father in Moscow. They were later falsely accused, which caused a huge uproar. I heard that people in Beijing protested and demonstrated because of this.
The north side also refused to admit it and instead released fake news, further exacerbating the already tense relationship.
I heard that many troops from other places have already set off for the Northeast.
The Hexi Corridor is a very special place. The provincial military region originally wanted to form a new army, but after what happened above, the formation of the new unit has been decided. I heard that even the name has been decided, and it will be called the 19th Army.
Therefore, Zhuang Mingcheng has been very busy these days.
"You said you'd nourish me, but I think I'd kill a chicken to nourish you, and you've already lost weight."
Lu Fangfang muttered to herself, then turned off the light and lay down next to her husband.
...
The next day.
Lu Fangfang was leading her little one to the breeding farm when she ran into Li Dajun at the entrance of the family compound.
"Comrade Xiao Lu, thank you so much for yesterday."
Li Dajun beamed with joy and quickly expressed his gratitude.
"It's nothing, I wasn't much of a help. Comrade Li Dajun, I heard the child is quite thin, you'll have to take good care of him."
Lu Fangfang did not take credit.
To be honest, she didn't really help much; she just talked to Li Dajun, nodded, and then turned and walked out of the family compound.
Upon arriving at the breeding farm, she and Sister Shufen picked out hatching eggs again.
Now that the temperature has risen, even the quails in the shed are laying more eggs, and their daily egg production is much higher than in winter, which is very beneficial for them to select fertilized eggs.
For the next few days, Lu Fangfang was busy with the breeding farm.
After selecting four thousand eggs, they found a warm day and began incubating the quail eggs.
By mid-month, the group had decided that the person the farm needed to hire was Wang Meijun's sister-in-law.
Lu Fangfang had no objections, as long as it wasn't Yang Yufeng.
Now that she was heavily pregnant, she only wanted to rest and had no interest in doing anything else, so she handed over her sister-in-law Meijun to Sister Shufen and asked Sister Shufen to teach people how to raise quails.
By the end of the month, only 3,700 out of 4,000 quail eggs had hatched.
More than two hundred of them were unhatched eggs. It was the first time Lu Fangfang had hatched so many quail eggs, and she had expected so many to be unhatched, but she still felt it was a bit of a pity.
The two snow eggs she brought were also unhatched, which was a great disappointment to her.
It seems that breeding snow chickens is not as simple as it seems.
When she got home, she gave Xiuxiu some instructions.
Next time the snow chicken lays eggs, we won't need to collect them. We can see if it will incubate the eggs itself, so as to avoid wasting them.
