Chapter 138: Hilarious Couplets

Wei Mo smiled at Qian Manman, and even the old man and Wang Zhenhua looked at Qian Manman.

Qian Manman noticed that everyone's eyes were on her, scratched her head in confusion, and then said.

"What's wrong? Did I say something wrong? Isn't it posted here?"

Seeing that Qian Manman truly didn't understand, Wei Mo looked at Aunt Manman in front of him and slowly explained.

"Aunt Manman, look, isn't this a sign of good fortune coming upside down?"

"Yes, that means good fortune has arrived! Your 'Fu' character is upside down!"

Wei Mo heard Qian Manman not reacting yet, and even read it aloud, but Wei Mo laughed at her from the side.

"That's right, isn't this a sign of good fortune arriving? Good fortune has already arrived."

Only then did Qian Manman realize what was happening, and she slapped her forehead.

"So that's how it is! No wonder I've seen so many people giving money away backwards!"

"I didn't understand what was going on before, and I didn't dare to say anything. Now I know that's the reason. Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

Qian Manman felt a little embarrassed. She had never put up couplets at home, and she didn't dare to criticize the couplets that others had put up in the village.

When she saw that the villagers had pasted the paper upside down, she thought they were illiterate, but it turned out that she had misunderstood.

When Qian Manman learned that "good fortune has arrived" meant this, she quickly stood next to the old man and said to him.

"Godfather, if you write another 'Fu' character, I want to paste it upside down too."

Wei Xiaomin and Wei Xiaohui, standing nearby, kept egging them on. One of them reached out her little hand, asking Ye Zi for a "Fu" (good fortune) character! She excitedly told the old man.

"I want to put one on too! I want to put one on too!"

"Grandpa, Grandpa, I want to put up a 'Fu' character too!"

Even Wei Xiaohui showed exceptional enthusiasm.

Wang Zhenhua and the others had already cleaned the house thoroughly, leaving it spotless. They all gathered around to watch Grandpa Yu write couplets and the character "福" (fortune).

Watching his family having a lively time, Wei Mo suddenly thought of several funny couplets. He wanted to share them with his family so that everyone could have some fun, so he started to say them to the old man.

"Grandpa, Grandpa, I know several couplets too, they sound really nice."

The old man was overjoyed to hear this, and he and his family all turned to look at Wei Mo. Wei Mo thought to himself, since it's the New Year, I might as well pretend for a bit; the most important thing is that my family is happy.

Wei Mo, dressed as an ancient scholar, paced back and forth around the family, his little hands behind his back, shaking his head and muttering to himself.

"Golden roosters fill the roost in disarray. Weasels snatch things away. Horizontal inscription: 'If they don't snatch them, so be it.'"

After Wei Mo finished speaking, Wang Zhenhua and the others were stunned for a moment, and then burst out laughing.

Even Grandpa Yu couldn't help but burst into laughter, and Wei Mo even pretended to be a little child and asked his family members questions.

"What do you all think? Isn't my couplet nice?"

Li Xiuxiu couldn't help but laugh at Wei Mo, but she felt that Wei Mo was probably doing it on purpose, so she pulled Wei Mo aside and whispered to him.

"Don't say that, that's not good."

Wei Mo nodded and whispered in Li Xiuxiu's ear.

"I know, I just want everyone to have some fun and be happy, isn't that great!"

Li Xiuxiu rolled her eyes at Wei Mo and ignored him, while Wei Mo continued to look at the crowd who were already laughing hysterically and slowly spoke.

"A pen full of golden pigs! A wolf carrying 10,000! The horizontal scroll says, 'Leave two as a token of gratitude!'"

The family was so amused by Wei Mo's words that they laughed heartily.

Wang Zhenhua, suppressing a laugh, came over and patted Wei Mo. Looking at his mischievous son, he clutched his stomach, which ached from laughing, and said seriously.

"Just study properly and stop doing these weird things!"

Wei Mo rubbed his head, which didn't hurt at all, and then looked at everyone. His laughter subsided before he slowly spoke.

Celebrating a prosperous and long-lived New Year, wishing you all the best for the festival. (Horizontal scroll: Congratulations on your fortune!)

The old man was overjoyed to hear this and hurriedly picked up his pen to write, saying excitedly.

"This is good, this is good!"

Then he gave a thumbs-up and began writing on the red envelope.

After Wei Mo recited a fine couplet, the old man quickly and gracefully wrote down the same couplet on the red paper.

After the old man finished writing, he nodded with satisfaction and was very happy. Then he spoke to Wei Mo.

"Grandson, one more, one more! Look how good this is!"

Wei Mo thought for a moment, then continued to be silly, slowly reciting to his family members who had recovered and were no longer laughing heartily.

"The car travels thousands of miles."

As soon as he finished speaking the first sentence, the old man's eyes lit up. Although he said that his family did not own a car, and there were not many cars in this day and age, his words sounded impressive!

The next sentence almost made the old man laugh himself to death.

"Cover up when you go out! (Horizontal inscription: Leave two cart wheels)"

The family burst into laughter once again at Wei Mo's antics. Seeing that everyone was happy, Wei Mo stopped teasing them.

Then they continued to apply paste to the already written "福" (good fortune) character and couplets, and the family happily began to paste the couplets.

After the old man finished writing down all the New Year's red envelopes, Wei Mo noticed there were still red papers next to him, and his eyes lit up. He stepped forward and tugged at his grandfather's sleeve, asking him pleadingly,

"Grandpa, Grandpa, can I have some of this red paper? I want to make something."

Upon hearing this, the old man's eyes lit up, and he nodded to Wei Mo, saying excitedly.

"Alright, my dear grandson, take it if you want. If it's not enough, I'll go out and ask other people for some more!"

You should know that once Wei Mo has an idea, it's always something good.

So the old man readily handed all the remaining red paper to Wei Mo.

After receiving the red paper, Wei Mo pondered for a moment, then returned to his room and brought out his set of wooden tools.

We still have a lot of willow branches and wood at home, enough to make several red lanterns. Although we don't have red cloth, red paper will look especially nice.

As for candles, they're available in our own store! That's in line with the times, so there's no need to go out and buy them anymore.

Nowadays, almost no one hangs red lanterns anymore, because red lanterns have to be bought from supply and marketing cooperatives, and no one is willing to pay the price of a single red lantern.

Moreover, supply and marketing cooperatives would never stock such useless goods; they could only be bought at the Baihu Building in the city.

When Wei Mo saw the red paper, he wanted to make a few red lanterns himself, since lanterns make the place more festive.

Making lanterns was no challenge for Wei Mo, as he possessed weaving skills and extensive knowledge.

He picked up some willow twigs and quickly wove them into a ball shape. Then he applied paste to red paper and stuck it onto the ball, thus forming a large red paper ball!

Wei Mo then quickly used the carpenter's tools to grind out a piece of wood, placed it in the center of the lantern, and left a small hole in the middle to insert the candle.

Although the candles are not very bright, they still emit a red glow from a distance, especially when illuminated by red paper, making the large red lanterns visible from a great distance.
