Chapter 47 Catching Rabbits

After leaving Zhou Miao and Zhou Yang at the Yu family's house, Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli borrowed a shovel from the Yu family, packed their equipment, and rode their bicycles up the mountain.

Many people in the brigade often went up the mountain to hunt for wild game, so they couldn't find anything in the mountains near the brigade. The two of them walked a bit further, and the traces of human footsteps became fewer, so they were able to encounter more things.

Zhou Mingli was clearly familiar with this environment. He glanced around and laughed.

Jiang Ci was looking around curiously when she heard him laugh, so she leaned closer and asked, "What's wrong?"

"The rabbit hole," Zhou Mingli said with a low laugh. "We might get to eat rabbit today."

Jiang Ci's eyes widened. "How did you figure that out?"

Zhou Mingli had identified it this way before, but he didn't know how to explain it. So he simply bent down and parted the grass leaves around him, and sure enough, there was a hole underneath.

Jiang Ci couldn't help but get excited, "Just take it out? My arms are thin, I can stick it in!"

Zhou Mingli grabbed Jiang Ci, who was already eager to try, and said, "It's not that easy. A cunning rabbit has three burrows. These rabbits are digging holes underground, and there's definitely more than one exit."

Zhou Mingli said, "First, look around for dry leaves. I'll look for rabbit holes. I'll block all the rabbit holes I can find with smoke. If there are rabbits inside, they will only come out of one hole."

Jiang Ci understood Zhou Mingli's meaning and immediately got to work. As long as there was work that brought her meat, Jiang Ci would never complain about being tired.

Strangely enough, Jiang Ci never had a big appetite before. Whether eating at home or out, she would finish her meal in a few bites. No one could put food she didn't like into her mouth, and she would end up leaving more food than she ate.

But now, when Zhou Mingli cooks a meal, the bowls and basins are always empty. She can swallow even the hard-to-eat cornbread without batting an eye, and Jiang Ci wouldn't even let a single grain of rice fall, let alone waste food.

She gets incredibly hungry at the mere mention of meat, probably because her body is terrified of hunger. This instinctive reaction sends a signal to her brain, causing Jiang Ci to unconsciously crave food and frantically satisfy her stomach.

There's only one and a half fish and some noodles left at home, which isn't enough for several meals. But Jiang Ci gets really enthusiastic whenever meat is mentioned.

Before long, Jiang Ci brought over a large pile of dry leaves. Zhou Mingli searched the vicinity and found four or five rabbit holes. He and Jiang Ci blocked up each rabbit hole, leaving only one entrance.

Jiang Ci crouched in front of the rabbit hole that had been left behind. Zhou Mingli lit some dry leaves. The place was damp because it had just rained, and soon thick smoke began to spread into the rabbit hole.

Jiang Ci stared at the cave entrance, but before she could speak, she suddenly felt something dart out!

She froze for a moment, then her hand grabbed the rabbit faster than her brain, and two rabbit ears appeared in her hand. Afraid that the rabbit would struggle and run away, she pressed down on the rabbit's head!

Jiang Ci: "???"

Is this rabbit really that easy to catch?!

The thought flashed through her mind, and Jiang Ci exclaimed, "Ouch!"

With lightning speed, the other hand pounced forward again!

Another rabbit!

Zhou Mingli didn't expect the rabbit to be smoked out so quickly. He had a feeling that there must be more rabbits in the burrow, so he simply turned off the fire and ran quickly to Jiang Ci's side.

Just as Zhou Mingli had suspected, he and Jiang Ci had gotten themselves into trouble!

One rabbit after another scurried out, and Jiang Ci had to hold down a fat rabbit with each hand, leaving her with no hands to catch them!

Zhou Mingli couldn't just stand by and watch the rabbits escape, so he quickly caught two more.

Several fat rabbits darted past their feet.

Jiang Ci looked closely and exclaimed, "There are five more?!"

"We can't catch them."

Zhou Mingli felt a little regretful; it's hard to catch nine rabbits with four hands.

Jiang Ci looked down at the rabbits she was holding, then at the two Zhou Mingli was holding, her eyes crinkling into a smile. "Those don't look very big, so we'll just grab a few. Chives need to be harvested once before they grow back, right?"

As long as they know there are rabbits here, they won't have to worry about not being able to eat rabbit meat in the future.

Zhou Mingli met Jiang Ci's bright, sparkling eyes and smiled.

"You're right."

Fortunately, Zhou Mingli had woven a bamboo net in advance, and the four fat rabbits were thrown inside, filling the net with their plump bodies.

Zhou Mingli weighed it in his hand. "It weighs about ten pounds. Our family can't finish it. We can share one with Brother Yu's family when we get back."

Jiang Ci nodded. The Yu family had helped them a lot, so it was only right to give them a rabbit.

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli extinguished the fire and made sure there was no more smoke or flames before continuing deeper into the area.

Upon encountering a patch of lush green grass, Zhou Mingli recognized the wild vegetables.

He pointed them out to Jiang Ci, "These are edible; we'll use them to stew fish tonight."

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli each took a small shovel and put a lot more wild vegetables into their bags.

As Jiang Ci dug, she became separated from Zhou Mingli. It was a hillside with a forest below and many trees on both sides. Her legs were numb from squatting, and when she stood up, everything went black.

Oh no, it's rising too fast.

After swaying twice, Jiang Ci quickly grabbed onto a tree trunk beside her.

Jiang Ci suddenly felt that something was wrong with the texture. A soft, slightly damp, rough on one side and smooth on the other appeared on her fingertips.

It doesn't look like tree bark.

Jiang Ci shook her head, and after regaining her senses, she turned her head and couldn't help but shout.

Upon hearing Jiang Ci's voice, Zhou Mingli immediately stood up. "What's wrong?"

Jiang Ci took several steps back. "Zhou Mingli! Look what this is!"

Zhou Mingli walked over and helped the somewhat shocked Jiang Ci. Looking up, Zhou Mingli, who had thought something serious had happened, breathed a sigh of relief.

"Wood ear fungus, Jiang porcelain, this is black wood ear fungus."
