Jiang Ci looked at the layers of black things on the tree with surprise and doubt. "Are there really such big wood ear mushrooms? They look awful."
Zhou Mingli nodded, "These wood ear mushrooms look very good. After processing them, they can be stewed with meat or stir-fried."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Ci immediately stopped thinking the thing was ugly and started picking it! It was all hers!
The tree was withered so that so many wood ear mushrooms could grow. Zhou Mingli and Jiang Ci picked them all clean. If they weren't picked, these things would rot. It was better to pick them and dry them in the sun to make dried wood ear mushrooms. They could soak them whenever they wanted to eat them later.
The two went further into the mountains. They hadn't gone far when Jiang Ci was studying what else they could eat when Zhou Mingli suddenly grabbed her hand. Before she could ask anything, Zhou Mingli pulled Jiang Ci down to squat down and then tilted the bicycle to one side.
Jiang Ci was puzzled, but still lowered her voice and asked, "What's wrong?"
“There’s someone here,” Zhou Mingli said in a low voice.
Jiang Ci immediately fell silent, and neither of them spoke. Soon, a soft rustling sound could be heard from afar.
Jiang Ci looked up.
She saw someone she knew.
Jiang Ci opened her eyes wide, then crawled back inside, turned to look at Zhou Mingli, and whispered in his ear, "It's Li Hu and Xia Lei! There's another one I don't recognize."
Warm breath fell on his ear, and half of Zhou Mingli's body seemed to go numb. He froze and didn't move until Jiang Ci finished speaking, then turned his head to look at her.
Jiang Ci hadn't left yet, and the two were so close that they could almost hear each other breathing.
The close proximity allowed Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli to almost see themselves reflected in each other's eyes.
They both froze.
