Why are there boxes here?
Jiang Ci didn't mind the dirt. She reached out and brushed away the soil around the exposed corner. It wasn't a box at all; it was a half-sized box.
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao were a little confused. "Mom, what is this?"
"I don't know, let's dig it up and see."
Jiang Ci put down the bucket in her hand, found a sharp stone, and began to dig at the box.
Zhou Miao clenched her little hands, the tiny girl squatting to the side, encouraging Jiang Ci.
Zhou Yang became even more excited, wiggling his bottom and raising both hands up and down with his movements: "Mom! Go! Go, Mom!"
The surrounding soil was too hard and difficult to dig.
Once half of the box was exposed, Jiang Ci grabbed it and pulled hard, bringing out a large rock and a lot of dirt that had been pressing down on it. In the darkness, it was difficult to see what it looked like, but it felt like lacquerware. Jiang Ci looked closely and saw that there was a lock on it.
"Mom, what's this?" Zhou Yang stuck his head out, blocking Jiang Ci's view of the box.
Jiang Ci pressed his little head back down, "I don't know, let your dad take a look when we get back."
It wasn't easy to open it here, so Jiang Ci looked around. The woods were secluded and there weren't many people around, so she put the box directly into the bucket. Cicadas crawled up and down, quickly submerging the box.
Jiang Ci calmly said to the two children, "Come on, before it gets dark, let's look for any more cicada nymphs."
Zhou Yang: "Yay!"
Jiang Ci: "Don't run! Didn't you see your sister fall just now?"
Zhou Yang's carefree steps suddenly stopped. She pouted and waited obediently for Zhou Miao to catch up.
Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao walked hand in hand in front of Jiang Ci, looking around and forgetting about the box in no time.
Jiang Ci took her two children home as it was getting dark.
Zhou Mingli hadn't returned yet, so Jiang Ci washed the two children's hands and faces, changed their clothes which were dirty from playing wildly, and then let them play by themselves in the yard.
She went inside, grabbed something, and started smashing the lock on the box.
The lock wasn't big, so it was easy to break open.
Jiang Ci slowly opened the box.
It was too dark to see clearly, so Jiang Ci squinted slightly and reached inside to feel what was inside.
Jiang Ci's breath hitched as her fingers touched the inside of the box; an answer was beginning to emerge.
Suddenly, Jiang Ci stood up abruptly, found the only oil lamp in the house, lit it, and moved it to the table to illuminate the box.
The dim light of the oil lamp illuminated the surroundings, and Jiang Ci could clearly see what was inside.
That's a large yellow croaker!
Three whole large yellow croakers!
Is she really that lucky?!
Jiang Ci touched the three large yellow croakers, half-closing her eyes, and touched her head, wondering if she had really gotten some good luck.
You can catch three large yellow croakers by going out for a walk.
As expected of her!
Countless riches had flowed through her fingers, but Jiang Ci was not blinded by these three large yellow croakers.
After all, this big yellow croaker can't be exchanged for money for the time being, so it's best to hide it for now.
Jiang Ci wiped the box clean and casually placed it on the bedside table. The box had intact paint and an antique shape, making it a good storage box.
...
Zhou Mingli hadn't returned yet. Jiang Ci came out of the house, her face beaming with joy. She looked around and started looking for something to do. She took a hoe and loosened the soil around the vegetable garden, thinking that the garden could still be used later.
It was completely dark when Jiang Ci heard a noise at the door.
Dazhu and Erzhu's excited voices could be heard from afar, "Uncle Zhou! From now on, we'll follow you! You're amazing!"
"How about you have all the shrimp and eels we caught?"
Zhou Mingli's voice, tinged with amusement, rang out, "So you've already learned how to offer sacrifices?"
"Of course, these shrimp aren't as tasty as the birds!"
"Hey, who's your dad here?"
Brother Yu deliberately said something from the side, and Dazhu and Erzhu immediately started circling around their father again.
Jiang Ci put down her hoe, opened the door, and saw that the four people in the group were carrying a lot of things. She glanced at Zhou Mingli. Although it was already dark, they had flashlights in their hands, and she could see that Zhou Mingli was covered in mud.
"Aunt Jiang, we're back!"
Jiang Ci greeted them with a smile, "You were out for quite a long time today, looks like you had a good haul."
Brother Yu beamed with joy, "Of course! Second Brother has a really sharp eye! He actually found a pond with lots of fish, and we caught quite a few!"
Dazhu and Erzhu chimed in, "Uncle Zhou even knows how to catch birds! Aunt Jiang, we've caught so many birds!"
Zhou Miao and Zhou Yang ran out and, upon hearing the birds, excitedly surrounded Da Zhu and Er Zhu.
They didn't stand on ceremony and brought out a string of birds tied together for Zhou Yang and Zhou Miao.
The two children had never caught a bird before. They stared at the bird for a moment, then became frightened. Dazhu deliberately teased them by throwing the bird at Zhou Yang. Zhou Yang screamed and ran in front of the door. When Zhou Miao saw her brother running, she followed him, screaming as she ran.
Everyone found it amusing and laughed for quite a while.
After the fish were divided, Brother Yu led the two children home, and Zhou Mingli's family also returned to the yard and closed the door.
Zhou Mingli had a great harvest this time; after distributing the fish, he still had two baskets left.
With his own yard and the gate closed, Zhou Mingli stopped being so particular. He took off his mud-covered shirt, revealing his muscular upper body.
Zhou Mingli seemed to be focused on his own work, but he kept hanging around Jiang Ci.
Jiang Ci knew exactly what he was doing at a glance, so she turned her head to look at the two baskets of fish instead of looking at him.
"How come I've had such a great harvest today?"
Keep in mind that they only caught five fish on their first fishing trip.
"This time, Brother Yu borrowed a net. When our group arrived at the place where we first went fishing, there were already people catching fish there, so we changed to another place."
After leaving, Zhou Mingli and the others walked around for nearly half an hour, and they actually found another pond. It seemed that not many people came here. As soon as Brother Yu and he cast their first net, they sensed that something was wrong.
There were at least eight or nine fish jumping around!
Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu both took a deep breath. Eight or nine fish! This was only the first net!
The fish were hauled up and filled a basket. Brother Yu immediately told Dazhu to go home and bring three more baskets.
Apart from the bucket in Erzhu's hand, which was filled with river shrimp, crabs, and loaches, the baskets brought by Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu were all full!
Five whole baskets full of fish!
Zhou Mingli then explained why Dazhu and Erzhu were so agitated: "After we finished fishing, I noticed there were quite a few birds over there, so I set another trap and caught some birds for Dazhu and Erzhu. That's how they ended up like this. It will be safe for us to go back when it gets dark."
That's why they came back late.
“We can’t possibly eat all these fish,” Jiang Ci said. “Should we sell them on the black market?”
Zhou Mingli said, "Don't worry, we can get rid of them. Tonight, Brother Yu and I rode our bicycles in the dark and sold them."
