Chapter 64 Selling Fish

Jiang Ci, hearing that he had a plan, stopped caring and said, "I'll pick out a few, and we'll deal with these shrimp too, shall we?"

Zhou Mingli: "Okay."

Jiang Ci picked out six fish, mainly to make salted fish. The smaller grass carp can be pickled. We'll have grilled fish for lunch tomorrow.

While Zhou Mingli was taking a shower, Jiang Ci prepared all the shrimp. After he finished showering, Jiang Ci rinsed herself again with soap to wash away the fishy smell.

After finishing her work, Jiang Ci told the two children to swat the mosquitoes out of the mosquito net on the bed, while she pulled Zhou Mingli and led him into the room to take out the packaged items.

Zhou Mingli raised his eyebrows slightly, but Jiang Ci didn't speak, so he silently watched Jiang Ci's actions.

“I dug this out in the woods behind the house. Guess what’s inside?” Jiang Ci asked in a low voice.

Something that Jiang porcelain would wrap in cotton cloth must be valuable.

Seeing her expression that said, "You'd never guess," Zhou Mingli playfully asked, "What is it?"

Jiang Ci slowly unfolded the cloth.

There were three large yellow croakers lying inside.

When Zhou Mingli's gaze fell upon the large, golden yellow croaker, his breath caught in his throat.

His gaze shifted to Jiang Ci's face, where the corners of her lips curved into a smug smile.

Zhou Mingli composed himself, took her hand holding the large yellow croaker, and the cotton cloth covered its golden luster once again.

"I worked hard fishing for two hours, and I didn't even earn as much as you did by going out for a stroll," Zhou Mingli said in a low voice.

"Do you even need to tell me?" Jiang Ci rewrapped the large yellow croaker and praised her generously, "But you're not bad either."

Zhou Mingli chuckled, then said seriously to her, "Hide it well, don't let anyone find out, or our house won't be peaceful tomorrow night."

Jiang Ci nodded. "You're right. We need to find a new place to hide the money and those golden peas at home."

Given the foreseeable danger, they will inevitably have to take action.

Jiang Ci and Zhou Mingli whispered to each other for a long time before moving all the valuables in the house, such as grain, meat, and vegetables, into the kitchen. As for the money and gold, they decided to put them in the safest place possible.

The two worked in the dark for a while longer before going back to their room to sleep.

Around one or two in the morning, Zhou Mingli got up, packed two baskets of fish, and rode his bicycle to the Yu family's house.

Brother Yu hadn't slept at all. As soon as there was any commotion at the Zhou family's place, he tidied up his things. The two of them exchanged a few words in hushed tones, then rode their bicycles in the dark past the threshing ground and left the Shanding Brigade.

The quarry was some distance from Shanding Brigade, so Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu took turns riding bicycles, and it still took them an hour to get there.

The work at the stone quarry is heavy and plentiful, and many workers have to get up early to go to work. The cooks in the stone quarry canteen also get up early to prepare meals.

Not long after Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu arrived at the stone quarry, they encountered workers yawning as they went to work.

"brother."

Zhou Mingli patted the worker who was yawning.

The worker was startled. When he saw that it was a stranger, his face changed drastically, and he opened his mouth to shout.

Zhou Mingli covered his mouth and whispered, "I'm here to sell fish. A friend of mine asked me to come. His surname is Qu."

"Waaaaah!" The worker's mouth was tightly covered by Zhou Mingli, and he couldn't say anything.

"If you don't call out, I'll let you go." Zhou Mingli was incredibly strong, but he spoke politely, even asking for his opinion, "Can you agree?"

The worker nodded, making a whimpering sound.

Zhou Mingli released his grip, and the worker immediately wailed, "You're talking nonsense! I'm the only one surnamed Qu in the stone quarry, I don't have... Waaah..."

Zhou Mingli covered his mouth again.

Brother Yu hesitated for a moment, "Second brother, are you sure this can work?"

Zhou Mingli gave him a reassuring look, then looked at the workers under his control.

He lowered his voice and said a few key words: "Black market, Forever bicycle, you buy a bicycle for your wedding."

The worker, struggling desperately and utterly terrified: "?"

His eyes became suspicious.

Zhou Mingli added, "Red Flag bicycles."

The worker finally stopped struggling and patted Zhou Mingli's arm.

Zhou Mingli released him.

"Oh, it's you! I thought you were just asking casually, I didn't expect you to actually come!" The worker looked him up and down, but it was too dark to see him clearly.

Actually, he looked forward to it for several days after he got back. If the person who swapped bicycles with him could bring some wild game, he would benefit from it too, right?

The man never showed up, and the workers gave up in disappointment.

Zhou Mingli simply replied, "I was too busy the other day and didn't have time."

"Five baskets of fish, would you like some?"

"Yes!" The worker glanced at Zhou Mingli and Brother Yu. "Come with me."

Seeing that there was hope, Brother Yu was overjoyed. He carried it on his back and held it in his hand, and followed along.

"Brother, my name is Qu Dashan, I'm a kitchen helper in the stone quarry's canteen. What's your name?" Qu Dashan asked Zhou Mingli.

"My surname is Zhou, and this is my brother, whose surname is Yu."

Qu Dashan understood why they didn't say their names.

Although the government has officially banned the private sale of goods, the current policy is not as strict as it was a few years ago, especially this year. The variety of things that can be bought and sold on the black market is increasing, and although those with red armbands are still being arrested, it is obviously not as frequent as in previous years.

Then Shen Conghe was arrested, and things got tense again.

As for Zhou Mingli selling these fish to the stone quarry, these were all private transactions. If the people don't report it, the officials won't investigate. If they don't say anything, who can find out?
