Chapter 15: What are you and mother arguing about in the kitchen?

In the yard, the night wind grew colder, making the leaves of the old locust tree rustle, like silent sighs.

Song Xingzhi listened quietly, his facial expression did not change much, except that his eyes seemed to become deeper, like two bottomless ancient wells.

After she finished speaking, he slowly spoke, his voice still low, but with an inexplicable penetrating power: "And then?"

"ah?"

Zhang Chunxue was stunned for a moment. She had prepared a lot of self-deprecation and countless possible reactions from Song Xingzhi, such as disappointment, contempt, or simply turning away. However, she never expected that he would ask such a question.

Then what?

She opened her mouth, but couldn't say a word.

Yeah, then what? She had already said such a bad thing about herself, shouldn't he just walk away?

Song Xingzhi looked at her bewildered expression, a trace of barely perceptible tenderness flashed across his eyes, but he quickly concealed it.

He sighed softly, almost as if he was sighing, but also as if he was comforting.

"It's getting late. You should go back and get some rest." He said in a slower voice. "It's time for the child to go to bed. It's cold at night. Don't catch a cold."

He looked at Zhang Chunxue deeply again.

The look in his eyes was so complicated that it made Zhang Chunxue feel uneasy, as if he wanted to see through her completely.

Then he turned around, stretched out his long legs, and walked into the night without looking back.

Zhang Chunxue stared blankly at the direction where he disappeared. The little granddaughter in her arms smacked her lips and moved as if she was feeling a little uncomfortable.

Somehow, she felt a little empty and uncomfortable in her heart.

She held the child, turned around and walked slowly into the yard, her steps heavy.

Just as she reached the door of the main room, before she could push it open, she heard Zhong Xiaoxiao's crying voice arguing from the kitchen.

"Second brother! How could you do this! That was porridge made for sister-in-law!" Zhong Xiaoxiao's voice was angry and anxious, with obvious sobs.

Zhang Chunxue's brows immediately furrowed.

Then, Zhong Chengren's nonchalant voice rang out: "What are you yelling about? Isn't there some rice crust left in the pot? Besides, she's sick, how much can she eat? I've worked all day, how can I be hungry?"

His tone was righteous and there was no guilt at all.

"But that was something mom specially left for my sister-in-law! You...how could you eat it all!" Zhong Xiaoxiao was so angry that she couldn't even finish her words. Tears welled up in her eyes and her voice trembled.

Zhang Chunxue's face was as gloomy as water, and she walked in quickly holding the child.

In the kitchen, under the dim light, Zhong Chengren was holding a large coarse porcelain bowl with a chip on the bottom. The bottom of the bowl was scraped clean, and there were a few white rice grains at the corners of his mouth.

Zhong Xiaoxiao's eyes were red as she glared at him angrily, her shoulders twitching, and she was obviously crying out of anger.

Zhang Chunxue listened to this for a few times, and the nameless anger in her heart suddenly rose up, but she forced a kind smile on her face and said to Zhong Xiaoxiao, "Xiaoxiao, come, carry Yuanyuan over. You comfort her first, don't let her catch a cold."

Although Zhong Xiaoxiao didn't understand why her mother could still laugh at this time, she still sniffed obediently, carefully took the swaddled Zhong Yuanyuan from Zhang Chunxue's arms, and patted her back gently.

The moment Zhong Xiaoxiao took the child, the smile on Zhang Chunxue's face suddenly disappeared, replaced by a cold look!

She turned around suddenly, her eyes sweeping across the stove like lightning.

The fire tongs leaning against the stove were shiny black and lying there quietly.

Zhang Chunxue took a step forward and grabbed the heavy pair of tongs!

"Ah!" Zhong Chengren was about to say something else, but before he could react, he felt a piercing pain on his buttocks, and the fire tongs had already hit him hard!

"Ah!" He screamed, and the empty bowl in his hand fell to the ground with a clang, breaking into pieces.

"You beast!" Zhang Chunxue's voice trembled slightly with anger, but the tongs in her hand didn't stop, raining down fire. "Your wife is so sick that she can't get out of bed, and you don't offer her tea or water, don't ask about her well-being, and you even dare to steal the rice porridge that was meant to nourish her body?"

The fire tongs hit the body, making a muffled "puff puff" sound, which makes people's scalp tingle.

"Mom! Mom! Stop hitting me! I was wrong! I was wrong! Ouch!" Zhong Chengren was beaten so hard that he screamed and ran around in the small kitchen with his head in his hands, but he could not escape Zhang Chunxue's anger.

"How could I have given birth to such a heartless person like you!" Zhang Chunxue chased him and hit him, each blow carrying the sound of wind. "Did you not hear a word that Secretary Song just said to you in your room? Huh? You turned a deaf ear to it, didn't you?"

Her chest was heaving violently, and she was obviously extremely angry.

"Your wife gave birth to children for your Zhong family and almost lost her life! And yet you couldn't even spare her a bowl of porridge when she was sick!"

The tongs fell on Zhong Chengren's back and legs again and again, and even hit his arms a few times.

Zhang Chunxue was really ruthless, using all her strength in each clamp, as if she wanted to vent all the disappointment and anger that had accumulated over the years.

Zhong Chengren was beaten until he cried for mercy, "Mom! I won't do it again! I won't do it again! Please forgive me!"

Zhang Chunxue then stopped, panting heavily, with beads of sweat already oozing out of his forehead.

She pointed at the corner, her voice still icy cold: "Go to the corner and kneel down! Don't get up without my permission!"

Zhong Xiaoxiao held Zhong Yuanyuan in her arms and watched in amazement.

This was the first time in her life that she had seen her mother so angry, and the first time that she had seen her mother beat her brother so harshly.
