Chapter 4 Deaf and Mute

Erniu's eyes darted around.

Song Hengjue had a headache and quickly explained, "Bainian, don't misunderstand, it's just some family matters. Erniu just doesn't keep his mouth shut and talks nonsense."

After saying that, he gave Erniu a warning look.

Song Erniu pursed his lips and awkwardly shut his mouth.

Tang Bainian breathed a sigh of relief. Thinking of Song Hengjue's previous talk about getting a divorce, he couldn't help but say, "If you can get a divorce, you should just do it already. Dragging it out every day isn't a solution."

He had heard everything from Erniu. Song Hengjue's wife not only cheated on him during their marriage, but she was also a ruthless character who could drive his mother to the hospital. Just thinking about marrying such a shrew was a nightmare.

Tang Bainian shivered.

If it were him, he would rather die than marry such a scourge.

"Soon." Song Hengjue said with a headache but a resolute tone.

Tang Bainian breathed a sigh of relief when he saw that he had no lingering feelings: "You don't need to worry about her parents bothering you. Logically speaking, it was her parents who tricked you into marriage, which is extortion. If they cause trouble, just call the police and I'll find someone to help you handle it."

"No need, I can handle it myself," Song Hengjue refused outright.

“Alright, whatever you want,” Tang Bainian didn’t insist and changed the subject directly. “Let’s talk about the R&D. The Bureau of Industry and Commerce has been keeping a close eye on us lately. You all need to be careful in your work these days, and hand over all the handover to people you can trust…”

Song Hengjue waved his hand, reassuring him: "Don't worry, if the Industry and Commerce Bureau catches you, we will definitely not implicate you."

Tang Bainian took a sip of tea and nodded slightly.

…………

Yang Qingheng returned home exhausted and drenched in sweat. She first poured the rice she had bought back into the rice container, then rolled up her sleeves and carried the large iron pot to the yard to scrub it thoroughly with a gourd ladle.

In her past life, due to her youthful impetuosity and with Li Jiaoyan and Gu Yi constantly deceiving and manipulating her, she mistakenly believed that Song Hengjue was in cahoots with her parents to arrange a marriage and break her up with Gu Yi.

In an attempt to get revenge on him, she committed many wrongdoings, which not only ruined his future but also left her with a lifelong disability.

If Erniu hadn't revealed the truth by chance, she wouldn't have known that her biological parents originally intended to sell her to a mentally challenged man in the next village as his wife.

As for why she eventually married Song Hengjue, it turned out that Song Hengjue went to great lengths to negotiate with her parents.

Yang Qingheng couldn't quite describe her feelings. She felt resentful and wanted to yell at Song Hengjue, thinking that he hadn't grown a mouth after all these years and that if he had explained things to her earlier, there wouldn't have been so many misunderstandings.

Having been given a new lease on life, her biggest wish is to be with Song Hengjue, seize this great era of reform and development, make money, and manage their little family well.

Thinking of this, she couldn't help but think of the five hundred yuan again, and her head started to ache.

It was past 11 p.m. when Song Hengjue finally entered the courtyard under the cover of darkness.

The woman was probably already asleep; the room was dark and empty. Song Hengjue gave a self-deprecating laugh and casually hung his coat on the back of the chair.

With a snap, the living room light bulb suddenly turned on. In the dim light, Yang Qingheng stood behind the door with her arms crossed, raising her chin: "You still know how to come back? What time is it? Where have you been gallivanting around so late at night?"

The questioning tone was unsettling, and Song Hengjue frowned: "Do you think everyone is like you?"

Yang Qingheng snorted coldly, opened the pot lid, and placed a bowl of rice heavily in front of him: "It's leftover, not finished."

I doubt he'd dare to mess around.

Song Hengjue subconsciously reached out and took it, giving her a strange look at her back, unable to figure out what this woman was up to.

The food was already cold, but he was starving and didn't mind, shoveling it into his mouth in big mouthfuls.

I must say, it actually tastes pretty good.

When Yang Qingheng came out of the kitchen, she saw the man wolfing down his food. Her brow twitched, and she laughed in exasperation: "What's your hurry? You're twenty years old. You don't know how to eat when you're hungry. Serves you right!"

The soup bowl in my hand was placed on the table with a crisp sound.

"For me?" Song Hengjue was flattered and his mind nearly went blank.

Something's not right. This woman is acting strangely today.

He stopped his outstretched hand in mid-air, coughed lightly, and said, "I suddenly don't really want to drink the soup anymore. You can drink it yourself while it's still warm."

"Drink my ass!" Yang Qingheng said irritably, glaring at him with sharp eyes, "I'll poison you to death."

As if to prove himself, he first took a big gulp.

Song Hengjue then picked up the soup bowl with some skepticism.

"The village chief mentioned at the meeting this afternoon that because of the typhoon a while ago, many old houses in the village collapsed, and half of the educated youth settlement also collapsed. Each family has to cut down six trees to help repair the old houses and build new educated youth settlements in the village," Yang Qingheng casually mentioned.

Song Hengjue raised an eyebrow; so this was where they were waiting for him.

He said generously, "Don't worry, I can handle this myself and won't bother you."

Yang Qingheng knew he had misunderstood, but she was too lazy to explain. She waved her hand, yawned, and went back to her room.

The walls inside the room were all made of mud, covered with a layer of dark, half-white lime. If you spoke even a little loudly, a layer of lime would fall down.

The only bright spot was the wedding quilt on the bed, a classic bright red with peonies. Song Hengjue's mother had even embroidered a few peanuts on the edges, saying it had a good meaning and would bring a healthy baby soon.

Unfortunately, no one could have imagined that the couple, who had been married for more than six months, had never consummated their marriage.

Having been given a second chance at life, she naturally didn't shy away from this, but when she thought of Song Hengjue's unwavering composure last time, Yang Qingheng immediately deflated.

She pulled open her collar and took a closer look inside. Although she wasn't as voluptuous as in later generations, she was still quite curvaceous. Surely she didn't deserve his disdain.

His eyes twitched slightly, and after hesitating for a few seconds, he took out a bottle of face cream from the drawer and smeared it all over his body before stopping.

As soon as Song Hengjue entered the room, he saw the woman on the bed pulling open her collar and sniffing around wildly, and he paused in his tracks.

"What are you doing?"
