She walked briskly to Xia Tao's side, handed him the tea, and asked softly with a gentle smile, "Brother, you seem to be doing well?"
Her eyes were full of concern, hoping to hear good news, yet somewhat incredulous that everything would go so smoothly.
Her eyes were fixed on Xia Tao, as if trying to find the answer in his face; her gaze was filled with expectation and worry.
Xia Tao took the tea and eagerly took a big gulp. The scalding tea slid down his throat, and a warm current instantly spread throughout his body, dispelling some of his fatigue.
A satisfied smile spread across his face, and his tone was full of pride as he said animatedly, "Of course, it went so smoothly! Goodness, there are so many people vying for the job of a truck driver."
When I arrived at the freight company, I explained my purpose to the manager, saying that I wanted to sell my job. The manager's eyes lit up, as if he had seen a treasure.
Without a word, they immediately found someone to take over, and the paperwork was completed incredibly quickly, as if it had been prepared in advance. I was worried there might be some hiccups, but everything went smoothly.
As he spoke, he gestured with his hands, his excitement evident on his face. He waved his hands in the air as if reliving the scene.
Xia Wan's eyes widened slightly, filled with surprise, and her mouth involuntarily opened slightly.
She never expected things to go so smoothly. She had been worried about her brother these past few days, and often tossed and turned at night, unable to fall asleep.
As she lay in bed, various possible difficulties and problems kept flashing through her mind, wondering what she would do if she encountered difficulties or complicated procedures.
She was so worried about her brother that she lost her appetite. "So fast? How much did they sell it for?"
She asked curiously, her eyes sparkling with anticipation and her voice carrying a hint of excitement.
She leaned forward slightly, as if that would allow her to hear the answer more quickly, her face filled with curiosity and longing.
"1200 yuan!" Xia Tao held up one finger and waved it, his face beaming with pride, as if he had accomplished a remarkable feat.
“I feel much more at ease now that I have this money in my hands. I’m sure Dad will be happy to hear about it.”
Thinking of his father's pleased expression upon hearing the news, Xia Tao's smile grew even brighter, as if he could already see his father's smiling face.
He pictured the relieved smile on his father's face after hearing the news; that smile seemed to dispel all his fatigue and make all the hard work of the past few days worthwhile.
Xia Wan laughed along, inwardly admiring her brother's competence. She gently shook her head and exclaimed, "Brother, you're really something! But I really didn't expect it to go so smoothly."
As she spoke, she sat down next to Xia Tao and asked, "So when do you plan to go back to Beijing?"
Her tone carried a hint of reluctance, but she also knew that her brother had his own things to do.
A hint of disappointment flickered in her eyes, but it was quickly replaced by understanding; she knew her brother had his own life and responsibilities.
Xia Tao put down his teacup, sat up straight, and his expression became serious: "I'll buy the tickets tomorrow and try to leave as early as possible. Grandpa told me before he left that I should go back as soon as I finished my business and not waste any time. I've always kept Grandpa's words in mind."
His eyes were resolute, as if he could see his grandfather's earnest gaze. His grandfather's dying words echoed in his mind, making him dare not slacken in the slightest.
His grandfather's face was clearly visible in his mind, and his kind eyes and earnest words became his motivation to move forward.
Xia Wan nodded slightly, then suddenly remembered something and couldn't help but smile: "By the way, what did you say to Li Chengjun? He even came to tell me today that I should contact him if I need anything."
Li Chengjun came over in the afternoon, but he didn't even have time to go inside. He just stood at the door, said a few words in a hurry, and left, which left her somewhat confused.
A look of confusion crossed her face as she awaited her brother's explanation, her eyes filled with curiosity.
Xia Tao scratched his head and smiled a little embarrassedly: "Before I left, I told him to take good care of you. I'm always worried about you being a girl here all by yourself. Even though you're all grown up now, in my heart you'll always be that little sister who needs my protection. I was just thinking that if you encounter any difficulties, he could lend a hand."
His tone was full of concern, the kind of meticulous care an older brother would show for his younger sister. His eyes were filled with worry, as if he were imagining all the difficulties his sister might encounter, and every possible scenario made his heart ache.
Xia Wan was both amused and annoyed when she heard this. She gently patted Xia Tao's arm and said, "Brother, I'm not a child anymore. Do you need to worry about me like this?"
Although I said that, I felt warm inside, like being bathed in the warm winter sun.
She understood that this was her brother's deep concern for her; no matter how old she got, in her brother's eyes, she would always be the little sister who needed to be cared for.
Her face was beaming with happiness, and her heart was filled with gratitude for her brother. This kinship was like a warm fire in winter, precious and comforting.
