Xia Wan raised an eyebrow. Was it a group crime?
Shouldn't people of this era be quite simple and honest? Why is the guesthouse so chaotic?
The waiter glared at the man who had spoken, inwardly cursing him as an idiot!
Who are they? If this person weren't her own younger brother, she wouldn't have waited for the girl to report it to the police; she would have done it herself!
Xia Wan didn't bother to watch their commotion. When the man reached out his hand, she broke his arm without any hesitation.
He mentally asked the system, "Little system, which of these two people is the human trafficker?"
[That's the one the host just typed.]
"Which one? Didn't I already hit both of them?"
[The last one!]
Xia Wan gave a soft "hmm" to indicate that she understood; it was the person referred to as "Second Brother"!
Knowing who the human traffickers were, Xia Wan turned to the waiter: "I'm definitely going to call the police today. As a waiter in this guesthouse, are you sure you want to stop me?"
A waiter stopped her from calling the police to catch the thief. If Xia Wan really made a big fuss about it, it wouldn't just be a matter of losing her job!
The waitress's face grew increasingly grim, and a layer of cold sweat broke out on her tense back. However, she absolutely could not bring herself to send her own younger brother to the police station.
"Sister, don't worry about her. You don't really want me to end up in jail, do you? Go and call a few more people. I refuse to believe we can't beat this bitch!" Hua Zi shouted at the waiter, unwilling to give up.
The waiter spoke in a low voice, worried about attracting attention: "Shut up! Didn't you promise not to come to the guesthouse again? Why did you bring people here again?"
"No, sister, is this the time to talk about this? Don't waste time, let's catch this little wench first. Don't worry, once we catch her, my second brother will handle it."
He knew exactly what kind of business his second brother was in, and he planned to take this young woman out and sell her, the farther the better!
Who will know that they broke into the guesthouse tonight?
Xia Wan didn't say anything, just watched them perform. She had thought that the waiter would call someone out to help them, so that she could get more points.
But she had misunderstood. The guesthouse was probably legitimate and hadn't colluded with the two thieves.
The reason this thief dared to act so brazenly was because the waitress was his sister!
From their brief conversation, Xia Wan could roughly guess that Hua Zi had taken advantage of his acquaintance with the waitress to brazenly bring people over to break into the house, thinking that having a waitress as a friend would protect him.
It seems this isn't the first time this person has done this; they must have been protected by this older woman before, which is why they've never been caught.
However, this time he had met his match. Xia Wan would not let them off easily, especially since it was not a simple matter of petty theft; it also involved human traffickers.
Judging from Hua Zi's tone, you can tell he knows who that second brother is, and he probably meant to get that second brother to sell him out too.
Xia Wan sneered as she watched the two arguing incessantly.
"Stop talking nonsense and hurry up. I don't have time to waste here with you guys in the middle of the night!"
The waiter finally started to take Xia Wan seriously, his previous perfunctory attitude gone: "Comrade, could you please let my brother go? You won't lose anything. I'll keep an eye on him in the future and make sure he doesn't do this kind of thing again."
"This isn't the first time your brother has done something like this, is it? Is this how you always handle things? And do you know what this person with him does?" Xia Wan asked the waiter.
"Wh...who are you? Comrade, it's all a misunderstanding." The waiter looked guilty. He clearly knew who this second brother was.
The second brother was also lying on the ground, looking at Xia Wan with a wary expression!
Xia Wan looked at their reaction, her eyes narrowed, and she suddenly changed her mind: "Hand over all the money you two have, and I can pretend nothing happened today."
His words immediately filled the three men with joy: "The man lying on the ground hurriedly used his still-intact arm to feel for the money in his pocket. This amount of money was nothing to them; as long as they didn't report it to the police, they would have plenty of opportunities for revenge later."
Xia Wan snatched the money from the two of them, pretending to be greedy. She counted it and found there were more than 30 yuan in total, then smiled.
The waiter watched nervously from the side. Seeing that Xia Wan's expression softened after accepting the money, he quickly said, "Comrade, is this alright? Can you let my brother and the others leave now?"
Xia Wan stuffed the money into her pocket, actually putting it into her spatial storage, and raised her chin towards the door: "Get out of here now, and don't do these shady things again!"
"Yes, yes, we'll go right away."
"I will never dare to do it again, I will never dare to do it again."
The two men, offering only a fawning and perfunctory reply, said they wouldn't dare do it again, then turned and ran out. The waiter stood there nervously watching Xia Wan: "Young comrade, what happened today?"
"Don't worry, I won't say anything more since I've already taken the money." Xia Wan said, ignoring the waiter's expression, and hurried upstairs.
She didn't have time to linger here. She quickly went upstairs to her room and looked out the window. She saw two men running in different directions.
Xia Wan opened the window and jumped from the third floor. Luckily, she found a foothold in the middle, otherwise her feet would have suffered.
Xia Wan chased after the direction the second brother had left in. The reason she changed her mind earlier was because she could tell that Hua Zi and the waiter both knew the second brother's identity.
Clearly, this human trafficker has become well-connected in Yongmao County and has probably trafficked in countless people.
Xia Wan felt that catching just one human trafficker was not enough to quell her anger, so she decided to follow them to see where their hideout was.
Xia Wan followed the man to a dilapidated house. The second brother knocked on the door rhythmically a few times, and after a while, she heard the door open from the inside.
The person who opened the door couldn't stop complaining: "Why are you only coming back now? We're not short of money, why did we have to go and break into the guesthouse with that kid? We didn't want to attract the police."
"Let's go inside and talk," the second brother interrupted the man's complaint impatiently.
After they went in, Xia Wan quietly climbed over the courtyard wall.
The courtyard reeked of a putrid stench, clearly not a place to live for long.
Xia Wan cautiously approached the window and peered inside. She saw a spacious hall filled with various old and worn-out furniture and miscellaneous items, and several unconscious children and women lying on the floor.
In a corner of the hall, several men were playing cards, cigarettes dangling from their mouths, and constantly cursing!
