Chapter 34 The Trial by the Enthusiastic Crowd

She leaned closer to Ji Chen and whispered, "Have you noticed that none of these women are wearing jewelry?"

Jiang Xue was eating a sesame seed cake while observing that women in this era had only just solved the problem of food and clothing.

But as their lives improved, even if they couldn't afford gold, they would buy some beautiful jewelry to match their clothes.

Ji Chen looked at Jiang Xue with suspicion, "What do you want to do?"

"Help me build a counter, with a transparent glass top, like the counters in gold shops," Jiang Xue instructed, then casually patted Ji Chen on the shoulder.

"Consider it a divorce gift." Jiang Xue couldn't help but laugh after saying that. It seemed like she had been exploiting Ji Chen all along.

If she doesn't exploit others, what can she do? She has no relatives or friends. To achieve financial freedom, she has to seize every opportunity.

Ji Chen was stunned for a few seconds. At first, he was looking forward to the divorce, but now he felt a strange mix of emotions.

"Here comes the food, be careful it's hot!" The proprietress, beaming, brought the dishes over.

Jiang Xue looked at the stinky mandarin fish, which looked and smelled delicious. It was a local specialty dish. One bite and it was truly salty, fragrant and delicate.

Jiang Xue peeled some fish meat, mixed it into the rice, added a few pieces of spicy and tender fatty intestines, mixed it all together, and handed it to Shao Heng.

Shao Heng couldn't wait to take a couple of bites, the slight spiciness stimulating his taste buds.

Seeing him sniffling, Jiang Xue quickly handed him the fermented rice wine, saying, "If you find it too spicy, don't eat the pork intestines."

She considerately prepared to help him remove it.

Shao Heng quickly stopped him, "It's delicious, I like it."

Jiang Xue immediately beamed and placed a few more into Shao Heng's bowl.

Shao Heng not only sniffled, but also wiped away his tears with his sleeve.

Jiang Xue was a little confused. She hurriedly used a tissue to wipe Shao Heng's tears. "What happened? Are you crying because it's spicy? It's too spicy, let's not eat it, okay?"

Jiang Xue's gentle words were like thorns, instantly piercing the dam in Shao Heng's heart.

Shao Heng couldn't help but burst into loud sobs, which drew the attention of everyone in the small restaurant.

Ji Chen apologized apologetically while patting Shao Heng on the back.

Jiang Xue hugged Shao Heng tightly and whispered to him, "Shao Heng, why are you crying? Tell your aunt what happened, okay?"

"I don't want you to get a divorce."

Shao Heng's voice was so loud that it seemed as if the diners in the entire restaurant had been put on pause.

Jiang Xue was stared at by the crowd with strange looks, and before she knew it, her face was red all the way up to her neck.

"The child is so young, and you're already thinking about divorce. It's the child who will suffer," several diners advised.

"Life is getting better and better now, and this man isn't bad either, so why are you so pessimistic?"

Jiang Xue's ears burned and buzzed as everyone tried to persuade her.

Ji Chen kept explaining, but no one seemed to listen; they were more concerned about the child's crying.

Jiang Xue quickly ate a bowl of rice and packed up the rest of the dishes. The two of them, along with the child, fled from the crowd's judgment.

"Let's go back," Jiang Xue said, a little embarrassed.

Ji Chen was even more embarrassed. "I'm sorry, everyone misunderstood you."

Jiang Xue shook her head, hugged Shao Heng and laughed, "Hey, it's not a big deal. How can you do business if you don't even have this much shame?"

Shao Heng hurriedly asked, "So, are you still getting a divorce?"

When Shao Heng pressed Jiang Xue and Ji Chen for answers, they both felt as if their souls had been electrocuted.
