Chapter Twenty: Arranging to Go to the Construction Site

After thinking for a moment, Lin Xiazhu went into Yan Xin's room and kindly reminded her, "My grandma is going to arrange for you to work on a construction site carrying bricks. You'd better be prepared."

Yan Xin: "?"

She was certain that this "bricklaying" was definitely real bricklaying, and that Old Lady Lin was going to die; she was absolutely certain that she and Zhao Xiaolian were incompatible according to their birth charts.

"Lin Xiazhu, tell the truth, was this the kind of life your mother lived in your past life?"

Of course not. Zhao Xiaolian was sad for her father for half a month, but she got over the grief of losing her husband. After all, she didn't have any feelings for Lin Shanlai. Her sadness was only because she thought about how there was no one to help with the housework.

Zhao Xiaolian quickly made up her mind. The death of her incompetent husband did not mean that all men in the world had died. She felt that this was an opportunity. She wanted to leave Linjia Village and go to the county town or town to find a man who could support her.

In short, Grandma Lin couldn't control the real Zhao Xiaolian. Zhao Xiaolian hated doing farm work the most, so how could she possibly listen to Grandma Lin's orders and do this or that? She dumped all the work in the fields on Lin Xiazhu and Lin Chacha.

“After my father died in my past life, my mother never did farm work again. She found another way out.” Lin Xiazhu smiled meaningfully.

"So what way out did she find?" Yan Xin's eyes lit up, her heart pounded, and she felt a glimmer of hope.

"She found a second spring in life with a bachelor tailor in town. The tailor had a limp, so he was over thirty and still hadn't gotten married. My mother approached him, and the two hit it off immediately, and that's how it happened."

Lin Xiazhu glanced at Yan Xin and said with a half-smile, "Why don't you give it a try? It's not a bad choice, after all, they had a big, healthy son less than half a year after they got married."

Yan Xin: "..." This is how Lin Shanlai got together with her half a year after he died, and they even got married because she was pregnant.

“In my past life, my mother took all of us sisters with her, but we won’t go with you. If you’re okay with it, you can go by yourself.” Lin Xiazhu looked completely honest.

"Pah, I'd rather die than find a man here. No, even with your mother's body, I'd rather die than get married." Yan Xin thought of that strange dream, and a glimmer of hope remained in her heart.

Once she has raised Lin Xiazhu and her sisters to adulthood, her mission will be complete, and she should be able to return to the future, right?

"Then you can just wait for my grandma to arrange a job for you. You'll be doing manual labor then." Lin Xiazhu didn't want to waste any more time talking to her; she had to go make some soup.

Because of her foot injury, Yan Xin was finally able to stop working. Grandma Lin would come over every day to nag her and check on her recovery.

"Grandma helped plant the vegetables in your family's private plot. Xiaozhu, remember to water them every other day. The shiitake mushrooms in the mountains will all be sprouting in two months. Ask your uncle to help you pick them then..."

Old Mrs. Lin was so worried that the wrinkles on her face deepened.

Once Yan Xin's injuries had healed, Old Mrs. Lin hurriedly urged her to pack her things and go to town with Lin Shanfu, "...Don't be ungrateful. If you're late, you'll lose your job. Be strong. Didn't you want to leave Lin Family Village? Now is a good opportunity..."

Yan Xin, her face expressionless, stuffed a set of clothes into her bag. She really had nothing else to pack; besides clothes, she didn't know what else to bring.

"Remember to bring your bowl and other daily necessities. You'll be staying at the construction site, which will save you the expense of renting a place," Grandma Lin instructed.

"Live on the construction site? How can that be allowed?" Yan Xin's face turned ashen. She would never live on the construction site, never.

"Why not? Are you willing to spend money to rent a house?" Old Mrs. Lin asked irritably.

She was willing to part with it, but unfortunately she didn't have a single penny on her.

She wanted to resist and say no, but at that moment she couldn't make a sound; it seemed like the heavens were against her.

"That's settled then. You can pack your things first. I have other things to do, so I won't see you off." Old Mrs. Lin left like a gust of wind.

Yan Xin gasped for breath, until her lungs felt like they were about to explode, and then she screamed, startling Lin Xiazhu and the others.

Damn, my eardrum was almost punctured.

The nearby villagers shook their heads when they heard the sound, thinking that Zhao Xiaolian's mental illness was getting worse and that it was probably incurable. Of course, no one in their family took her to see a doctor.

Some of the gossipy relatives who had planned to arrange marriages for Zhao Xiaolian next year have now given up on the idea.

"Zhao Xiaolian, what's wrong with you? Are you trying to scare me to death?" Lin Xiazhu was furious, but she still called out her mother's name when she called for help.

The name Yan Xin can only be used in private, otherwise the younger sisters in the family will become suspicious.

"Your grandma wants me to live on the construction site, but I don't want to live on the construction site, I don't want to, I'd rather die, you can kill me, I beg you to grant my wish, I'd rather die than live like this."

As she spoke, she banged her head against the wall, but the wall was made of mud, and each time she hit it, her face was covered in dirt. After coughing a few times, Yan Xin was not discouraged and continued to bang her head against the wall.

The wall was practically punched through with all the banging. After all that commotion, aside from a big bump on his forehead and a little bleeding, he wasn't in any real danger.

"Alright, alright, stop torturing yourself. I'll help you. I have money. I'll rent a place in town. You don't need to live on the construction site." Lin Xiazhu was at her wit's end and grabbed Yan Xin, who was still trying to cause trouble.

He pulled her into the room and handed her the leftover iodine. "Take care of your wound yourself. Don't think you can escape work like this. You can't get away with it."

"Isn't this what you wanted to see? I'd give you my life if you didn't agree? Why do you have to torture me like this?" Yan Xin cried, gasping for breath.

"No, I'm not like you, who likes to bully poor people. I didn't want to see you at all; you came along on your own." Lin Xiazhu pouted.

"You've been here for so long, have I ever bullied you? Not only have I not hurt you, I've also fed and clothed you. If I really held a grudge, you would be dozens of times worse off than you are now."
