Chapter 22 The Workaholic is About to Get It

Chapter 22 The Workaholic is About to Get It

Shen Huai'an didn't leave for long; he quickly returned to the bedside with the spare flashlight from home.

The room was pitch black due to the power outage, with only a faint light from the streetlamp shining through the window. He placed the flashlight on the bedside table. "It's getting late, you should go to sleep."

The man's voice was as cold as usual, and he didn't mention what had just happened. Even if Bai Zhenzhen wanted to take the initiative, she still had to save face, so she could only watch him leave the room again, fuming.

After the power outage, the air conditioner in the room also stopped working, leaving only a wisp of cool air, but this little bit of coolness was not enough to quell the heat on Chen Huai'an's body.

He left the bedroom and went straight into the bathroom. He turned on the tap, and the moment the cold water hit his face, the strange feeling that had lingered in his mind was completely suppressed.

Left alone in the bedroom, Bai Zhenzhen felt so angry that she couldn't sleep. She lay in bed thinking all sorts of random thoughts until the light from the flashlight gradually dimmed, and then she finally closed her eyes and fell asleep.

The next morning, Bai Zhenzhen was awakened by the annoying heat. Without the buzzing sound of the air conditioner running, she groggily remembered the power outage the night before.

At the same moment, she also remembered that Shen Huai'an had left her alone in the room last night. She subconsciously turned around and glanced to the side, only to find it empty.

Bai Zhenzhen grabbed a handful of her messy curly hair, got out of bed, and found her slippers neatly placed beside the bed. She paused, vaguely remembering that she seemed to have been barefoot when Shen Huai'an carried her back last night, so did he bring these shoes in?

As Bai Zhenzhen pushed open the door, she saw Aunt Wang wiping her hands as she came out of the kitchen. She subconsciously asked, "Aunt Wang, where is he?"

"Xiao Shen went to work without eating breakfast this morning," said Aunt Wang, who knew who she was referring to since the couple lived there. She added with a sigh, "No matter how busy you are at work, you can't skip breakfast. Young people should take better care of their health."

She had advised Bai Zhenzhen in the same way before, but after Bai Zhenzhen told her what the doctor had said during the physical examination—that as long as she ate three meals a day regularly and had breakfast a little later—Aunt Wang stopped nagging.

However, Shen Huai'an's situation was different from Bai Zhenzhen's. Therefore, when Shen Huai'an left home in the morning, Aunt Wang chased after him and reminded him to remember to buy some food on the way to work.

Bai Zhenzhen was obviously unaware of this, but that didn't stop her from pursing her lips, somewhat suspecting that Shen Huai'an had a hidden illness and dared not face her.

Thinking of this, she became worried again. Bai Zhenzhen had made an agreement with her father that once her marriage with Shen Huai'an was on track, she would get pregnant and see that she would still have family by her side, Bai Chuxiong would be willing to go abroad for treatment.

Bai Chuxiong is very stubborn. Bai Zhenzhen can't persuade him at all except by agreeing to his demands. But now she has only taken the first step in the plan, and the plan is about to fail completely.

The key issue is that she's afraid her father won't be able to handle the shock, so she doesn't dare tell him the truth.

Bai Zhenzhen sat at the table, eating her breakfast without any appetite. Her mind was wandering, and she even wondered what to do if Shen Huai'an really couldn't handle it. She couldn't very well make him a cuckold.

At this moment, Shen Huai'an, who was in a meeting with his colleagues to discuss the details of the case, was unaware that his wife was already considering cheating on him because she suspected him of being impotent.

Fortunately, Bai Zhenzhen is only thinking about it now and has no intention of taking any action. She decided to first invite Ren Lina out and learn from her experience. At most, she would give Shen Huai'an one more chance. If that still doesn't work, she will really have to think of other ways.

After breakfast, Bai Zhenzhen went into the dressing room. As she was about to change her clothes, she took out her phone to call Ren Lina when the phone in her hand vibrated first.

Upon opening the number, Bai Zhenzhen found it was an unfamiliar number. She answered with suspicion and quickly recognized the caller as Dr. Zhao Yongchang, whom she had met at Bai Chuxiong's place before.

She took advantage of her father's inattention to exchange contact information with Dr. Zhao so that she could know Bai Chuxiong's physical condition as soon as possible.

Upon receiving Zhao Yongchang's call, Bai Zhenzhen's hand tightened as she opened the cabinet door, fearing she might hear bad news from him.

"Ms. Bai, please don't worry. I'm calling to tell you about Mr. Bai's recent medical examination." Zhao Yongchang's voice was gentle and calm, which was usually the best way to soothe the emotions of patients and their families. As he spoke, Bai Zhenzhen's tension gradually subsided.

In summary, Bai Chuxiong's condition is currently relatively stable. Medication can control the frequency of attacks, but it cannot completely cure the disease. Moreover, every day that is delayed will further exacerbate the condition. In short, we hope to arrange surgical treatment for the patient as soon as possible.

Zhao Yongchang also suggested on the phone that if she wanted to learn more about the treatment options and the patient's condition, she could go to the hospital to ask his teacher, since his teacher was Mr. Bai's attending physician, and he was afraid that he hadn't explained things in enough detail.

"Thank you, Dr. Zhao, I understand." Bai Zhenzhen hung up the phone, her expression somewhat dejected.

She squatted there for a while before standing up again, taking out her clothes to change, and then asking Uncle Liu to take her to the hospital.

Bai Zhenzhen was indeed spoiled and willful before, but that was because she knew that her father always had her back. Now that her father's condition is critical, she can only force herself to calm down and grow up as soon as possible, because she is the only one left by her father's side.

The doctor in charge of treating Bai Chuxiong is the best cardiologist in Shenzhen. He is about forty years old and studied abroad when he was young. That's why he suggested that Mr. Bai Chuxiong go abroad for treatment.

After obtaining the patient's permission, Dr. Du explained the patient's condition and the principles of the surgical treatment to Bai Zhenzhen as much as possible. He also explained that there were currently no sophisticated instruments in China capable of performing such surgeries and suggested that she take the patient abroad for treatment as soon as possible. Dr. Du also said that he could recommend foreign experts in this field to them.

After listening attentively, Bai Zhenzhen asked Dr. Du, "If I bring the machine to the hospital, can Dr. Du perform surgery on my father?"

Upon hearing this, both Dr. Du and Zhao Yongchang, who was standing nearby listening, were stunned for a moment. Then, remembering the Bai family's wealth, they didn't think Bai Zhenzhen's words were an exaggeration.

However, Dr. Du shook his head. "Importing medical equipment is not that simple, and even if the Bai family can buy the machine, Mr. Bai's illness cannot be delayed for that long."

If there were the machines, Dr. Du could indeed perform surgery on Bai Chuxiong, but Bai Zhenzhen was oversimplifying things. The Chinese government has tried countless methods over the years but has failed to bring advanced foreign equipment back to China; it's not something that can be achieved in a short time.

Well, Bai Zhenzhen really didn't understand the ins and outs of this. She just thought that since her father was so averse to seeking medical treatment abroad, it would be better to buy the machine back to treat his illness. She didn't expect that this wouldn't be possible either.

Dr. Du finally advised Bai Zhenzhen that Bai Chuxiong's illness could not be delayed any longer. It would be best to have him receive treatment within three months, otherwise the success rate of the surgery would be affected if it was delayed any longer.

Bai Zhenzhen's face turned pale in an instant, and her eyes were red when she left. Seeing that she seemed very sad, Zhao Yongchang couldn't help but follow her out to see her off.

“Miss Bai, although what the teacher said was serious, Mr. Bai’s illness is not completely hopeless. I hope you can cheer up as soon as possible and persuade him to receive treatment.” Seeing that she was in a daze, Zhao Yongchang reached out to protect her from the patients who were bumping into her.

"Thank you, Dr. Zhao." Bai Zhenzhen's nose tingled, and she lowered her head and blinked several times to hold back her tears.

Zhao Yongchang escorted her to the hospital entrance, watched her walk down the steps, and then sighed before returning to the hospital.

After Bai Zhenzhen got into the car, she didn't cry. She quickly calmed down and began to consider the next steps.

As noon approached, Shen Huai'an, who was engrossed in his work, was reminded by a colleague that it was time to go eat. He nodded and continued to finish his work until most of the people in the office had left before he got up and headed to the cafeteria.

On the way, he ran into a colleague who was also late. Someone joked with him, "Prosecutor Shen, it's not easy for you and your spouse to reunite, and you're still working so hard."

The news that Shen Huai'an's wife had only recently moved into the family compound after being married for more than two years had spread among his colleagues at the procuratorate in the past few days. Where there are people, there is gossip, and even a serious place like the procuratorate is no exception.

"I just took on a case recently, and I don't have time to go back for lunch." Shen Huai'an didn't try to avoid these kinds of jokes. He simply explained and took his lunchbox to the window to get his food.

His colleague clicked his tongue twice and followed, wanting to tease him a bit more, but when he looked up and met his calm eyes, the words caught in his throat and he silently swallowed them back.

Everyone in the entire procuratorate knows that Shen Huai'an is a workaholic. The procuratorate is his home. He voluntarily stays late to work almost every day and doesn't like to attend social gatherings. It's unexpected that he's still the same even after his wife came.

I wonder if the rich girl can handle his aloof personality.

When it was time for dinner, Shen Huai'an didn't even go to the canteen. He just ate some dry, hard pastries that had been given out during the Mid-Autumn Festival from his drawer to fill his stomach, and then continued to bury himself in dealing with the case.

His colleagues, who were about to leave work, knew that Shen Jian was going to stay and work overtime again.

Shen Huai'an was indeed engrossed in the case, but soon his cell phone, which he had put away in the drawer, rang.

Upon hearing the ringtone, Shen Huai'an paused, his hand holding the pen still, before opening the drawer, taking out his phone, and answering the call.

"Shen Huai'an, have you forgotten that you promised to go to the movies with me?"

Bai Zhenzhen's angry voice came through the phone, but Shen Huai'an couldn't remember when he had agreed to go to the movies with her today.

Before he could ask, Bai Zhenzhen had already hung up the phone, urging him to hurry home.

Shen Huai'an pinched the bridge of his nose and suddenly remembered the notice he saw on the bulletin board at the entrance of the family compound when he left home in the morning. The notice stated that the family compound was undergoing electrical circuit renovations and that the power would be cut off every night after 8:30 p.m. until 9:00 a.m. the next morning.

It was almost eight o'clock, and Shen Huai'an inexplicably recalled the scene of Bai Zhenzhen panicking and rushing into his arms when the power suddenly went out last night.

She seems to be very afraid of the dark. Aunt Wang and Uncle Liu don't stay overnight in the family compound. When the power goes out, she might be the only one at home.

Making a decision takes only a moment. Shen Huai'an put down his pen, gathered the documents on the table, and then got up to pick up his bag and prepare to go back.

As he stood up, a colleague who was also working overtime reviewing a case blurted out, "Is Prosecutor Shen getting ready to go home and be with his wife?"

Shen Huai'an paused slightly, letting out a soft "hmm" as he spoke, leaving his colleague sitting there with a look of astonishment on his face.

Good heavens! Even the workaholic Shenyang prosecutor's office is finally getting the hang of things!
