Chapter 47 Confirmed Pregnancy
"No way, I missed you too. I even brought you a gift," Bai Zhenzhen's voice sounded particularly sweet on the phone as she listed them off for him. "I brought you one too, and I also brought one for Chen Qing, and for you. Mom and Uncle also bought things. I've been running around these past few days, I'm so busy, I'm exhausted."
Shen Huai'an listened quietly to her while holding his teacup, his eyes gentle and smiling. After listening patiently, he gave her his blessing with some concern, "Remember, don't go out alone. If anything happens, call me... call Dad immediately."
The hot tea in the cup gradually lost its temperature. Shen Huai'an gently stroked the inside of the cup, his eyes lowered.
His first thought was to call me, but then he realized that they were thousands of miles apart and even if the call connected, he couldn't protect her at that moment, so he changed his approach.
Bai Zhenzhen didn't find him long-winded and told him the truth, "Don't worry, Dad arranged for someone to accompany me on a trip. I've seen most of the sights these past few days. Now all that's left is to wait for the doctor to schedule Dad's surgery."
In the first few days after arriving abroad, Bai Zhenzhen found everything novel and interesting, but after a while, she began to feel uncomfortable. She didn't like the foreign food. She could eat steak, pasta, and pizza occasionally, but she got tired of eating them every day. She was already starting to miss Aunt Wang's soup and Mother Shen's homemade old duck soup.
Bai Chuxiong's nutritious meals were even more bland than hers. Bai Zhenzhen didn't dare say these things to his face, so she could only complain to Shen Huai'an on the phone.
Abroad, even finding a qualified chef is difficult, let alone having Bai Zhenzhen cook for herself, so all she can do is complain.
Unexpectedly, Shen Huai'an took it to heart and went to the post office the next day to inquire about the process of sending mail abroad. Fortunately, international mail was still available at that time, although it was not perfect. However, customs clearance and delivery time might take a long time.
After receiving a positive answer, Shen Huai'an went back and prepared some things to send to Bai Zhenzhen. Considering the long distance, some fresh food could not be mailed, so he only sent things that were easy to eat and could be stored for a long time.
Because he wasn't sure if the delivery would go smoothly, he didn't tell Bai Zhenzhen about it for the time being, so as not to disappoint her.
More than half a month passed in the blink of an eye, and Bai Chuxiong's physical examination report finally met the criteria for surgery, and the surgery was quickly scheduled.
With the most advanced equipment, the most authoritative experts, and all the necessary preparations made in advance, Bai Zhenzhen's heart jumped just before Bai Chuxiong entered the operating room.
She suddenly had some regrets. No matter how skilled the doctor or how advanced the equipment was for her father's surgery, surgery always carries risks. Even with an 80-90% success rate, it wasn't 100%. What if something went wrong? Was this the right choice she was making?
Tension and anxiety were about to overwhelm her. Bai Zhenzhen watched as the operating room door closed in front of her. The smell of disinfectant was so pungent. In a daze, she felt her stomach begin to ache in waves.
Secretary Wang noticed that she was overly nervous and hurried over to comfort her, but it was no use. He had no choice but to calm her down and help her to a chair to rest and wait.
Meanwhile, Shen Huai'an in China remembered the time Bai Chuxiong had arranged for the surgery and called him, calculating the time.
Bai Zhenzhen didn't respond to her phone ringing several times in her bag, so Secretary Wang answered it for her.
"Zhenzhen, how is it? Is Dad in the operating room yet?" The man's steady voice reached her ears intermittently, and Bai Zhenzhen's icy fingers regained some warmth. She bit her lip, and her voice trembled slightly as she spoke, "He's...he's in. Shen Huai'an, my dad will be alright, right? The surgery will definitely be successful, right?"
Shen Huai'an sensed her fear, paused for a moment, and then told her firmly, "Yes, Dad will be alright. Calm down and don't panic. Dad will be fine, and the surgery will be successful. Zhenzhen, don't be afraid, I'll be with you."
With his gentle reassurance, Bai Zhenzhen gradually calmed down. After her tension subsided somewhat, the discomfort in her stomach became more and more pronounced.
Bai Zhenzhen sensed something was wrong, so she hung up the phone and told Secretary Wang about her situation.
At first, Secretary Wang thought it was because she was too nervous, but he soon noticed that Bai Zhenzhen's face was turning pale. He immediately took it seriously and quickly went to find a doctor to examine her.
The nurse brought a wheelchair to take Bai Zhenzhen to a comfortable ward to rest, but Bai Zhenzhen was worried about Bai Chuxiong, who was still in the operating room, and didn't want to leave.
"Miss, please go for your check-up first. I'll stay here and let you know immediately if anything happens." Secretary Wang looked at the stubborn Bai Zhenzhen, his forehead almost dripping with cold sweat. He had to use all his persuasion to finally get her to leave.
After Bai Zhenzhen was wheeled away by the nurse, the doctor quickly took her for a detailed physical examination and then told her with a smile that she was one month pregnant.
"Congratulations, Ms. Bai. The doctor said you are pregnant, and you are almost four weeks along. The abdominal pain you felt earlier was due to being too nervous. The doctor said it's nothing serious." The assistant translated the doctor's words and told Bai Zhenzhen.
She was stunned for a moment after hearing this, and her hand subconsciously and gently touched her flat stomach. She was pregnant, almost a month along.
On the other side, the doctor was still conveying some precautions to his assistant, who listened attentively to every word and then relayed them to Bai Zhenzhen.
According to the doctor's diagnosis, she is currently experiencing some malnutrition, which is not conducive to the baby's development. The doctor will prescribe some supplements for her and advise her to eat more nutritious foods regularly.
This situation may be due to Bai Zhenzhen's recent lack of appetite and poor diet. She simply cannot get used to foreign food. Before she knew she was pregnant, she relied on cakes and desserts to fill her stomach every day, which led to insufficient nutrient intake.
Bai Zhenzhen remembered all the precautions relayed by her assistant, but since the examination was fine, she still wanted to hurry to the operating room to watch over Bai Chuxiong. She couldn't feel at ease until she saw her father's surgery succeed.
As soon as they arrived, Secretary Wang quickly assured them that there were no unexpected issues and the surgery had gone smoothly. She then inquired about Bai Zhenzhen's health.
Seeing that Bai Zhenzhen seemed dazed and hadn't quite grasped the situation, the assistant quietly told Secretary Wang that she had just found out she was pregnant.
"This is wonderful news! The boss has been longing to see his grandson, and this is the perfect opportunity. So the surgery is sure to be successful. Once he learns that Miss is pregnant, he will recover quickly." Secretary Wang's voice was filled with joy as she sincerely congratulated Bai Zhenzhen.
Bai Zhenzhen also thought of her previous agreement with her father, and this was indeed a good omen.
More than three hours later, the operating room doors finally opened, and Bai Chuxiong, who was still unconscious after the surgery, was wheeled out.
The doctor informed them that the surgery was a complete success, and Bai Chuxiong would have at least twenty more years to live. All he needed to do now was rest and wait for his full recovery.
Bai Zhenzhen was finally able to put her mind at ease. Back in the ward, Secretary Wang personally stayed by Bai Chuxiong's side until he woke up. Considering Bai Zhenzhen's physical condition, he advised her to rest first.
When Bai Chuxiong woke up and learned the good news that his daughter was pregnant, he was naturally very happy. When the doctor came to check on him, he jokingly said that Mr. Bai's physical indicators were rising sharply, as if he had received a blessing from God.
Bai Chuxiong couldn't understand foreigners' languages. He only heard from his assistant that he was recovering very well. If he could understand, he would definitely have cursed and given up. He was just happy to hear that he would soon have a grandson and granddaughter. He would rather die than give up until his grandson was born.
Bai Zhenzhen originally planned to wait until her father had fully recovered before returning to China together, but now that she is pregnant and unable to adapt to foreign food, Bai Chuxiong felt sorry for his daughter and asked Secretary Wang to accompany her back to China ahead of schedule.
Since it was a last-minute decision, Bai Zhenzhen wanted to give Shen Huai'an a surprise, so she didn't let Bai Chuxiong tell him. When the plane landed in Pengcheng, Uncle Liu came to pick her up and took her home to the family compound. Shen Huai'an, who was still at work, didn't know anything about it.
When Aunt Wang heard that she had returned, she rushed over from the villa. As soon as she saw Bai Zhenzhen, she felt sorry for her and said that she had lost a lot of weight. She then went out and bought a lot of ingredients to help her recover.
In the evening, after Aunt Wang helped prepare dinner, she left with Uncle Liu.
Before leaving, Bai Zhenzhen specifically asked Aunt Wang to call Shen Huai'an and ask him to come back early, using the excuse that Bai Zhenzhen had mailed something back.
Upon learning the news, Shen Huai'an finished his work early that evening and went home ahead of schedule.
When he entered the house, everything was as usual. On the table was dinner that Aunt Wang had prepared in advance. Although it was much more lavish than before, Shen Huai'an didn't think much of it. These past few days, Aunt Wang would come here whenever she had free time to clean up, and sometimes she would prepare dinner for him before leaving, just like today.
Everything at home was normal. After changing his shoes, Shen Huai'an looked around the living room but didn't see the package that Aunt Wang had mentioned on the phone, which Bai Zhenzhen had sent back. Just as he was about to look for it more carefully, the bedroom light suddenly turned on.
His gaze paused, an unrealistic thought arose in his mind, and without hesitation, he took a step forward.
Apart from that light, the bedroom was completely silent, as if everything was just a hallucination caused by Chen Huai'an's excessive longing.
But the next moment, the tightly closed bedroom door suddenly opened from the inside, and when the person he had been longing for appeared in the doorway, Shen Huai'an's calm expression was instantly stirred.
"Shen Huai'an, I'm back," Bai Zhenzhen appeared before him in a pure white nightgown, her pretty face bright and cheerful. She looked at him with anticipation in her eyes and asked, "Are you happy to see me?"
"I'm happy, I'm very happy." Shen Huai'an spoke after a pause, his calm tone masking his barely suppressed emotions.
Bai Zhenzhen was not satisfied with his reaction and was about to say something when she was suddenly pulled into a tight embrace by the man in front of her.
"Ah!" The words that were about to come out turned into a gasp. Bai Zhenzhen was only stunned for a moment before she smiled and reached out to hug him back.
The man's embrace was as warm as ever, and Bai Zhenzhen mischievously tickled his waist, inhaling his fresh and pleasant scent.
Shen Huai'an's eyes darted around as he gave her a deep look before bending down to pick her up and carry her into the house.
Bai Zhenzhen wrapped her arms around his neck, blinked her eyes, and whispered something in his ear.
