Jiang Yimian didn't seem to mind. She borrowed a table from the elderly couple next door who sold wontons and put the konjac from her basket on it.
As soon as it was set up, people immediately gathered around, looking at the dusty things and asking curiously, "Girl, what are you selling?"
Jiang Yimian took a sample of spicy konjac from her basket and placed it on the table before smiling and saying, "This is konjac, it smells so good, you can try it."
The woman's eyes lit up, and she immediately reached out her hand.
Jiang Yimian used a thin bamboo skewer to stick a string of konjac stems on it and handed it over.
The young woman took it and eagerly put it in her mouth. The spicy and chewy texture made her eyes light up. She quickly said, "Is this spicy stuff made from this grayish konjac in the bucket?"
Jiang Yimian nodded and continued, "This konjac tofu can be eaten cold, stir-fried, or boiled. It tastes great too. You can buy it to add a dish to your meal."
The young woman nodded repeatedly upon hearing this. In winter, there were hardly any vegetables to eat, except for radishes and cabbages from the fields and some pickled vegetables. She was already tired of eating the same thing three times a day.
How much is this konjac?
Jiang Yimian smiled and said, "Three coins per serving."
The konjac in the bucket was cut into evenly sized pieces early in the morning to make it easier to cook.
The young woman initially thought three coins was expensive, but when she saw the palm-sized, thick piece, she nodded in approval. It looked quite large; it could make a whole plate of food.
It was about the same size as the tofu at her stall, but a penny cheaper, making it a good deal.
She then nodded and said, "Pack me one."
Jiang Yimian then took out a piece of tofu wrapped in dried bamboo leaves that had already been soaked in water and handed it over.
At this time of year, there weren't many large green leaves available to wrap konjac tofu, so Zhao Xing'er specially brought dried bamboo leaves, saying she was saving them to wrap zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival, but now she had given them all to her.
The young woman took the konjac tofu wrapped in dried bamboo leaves, gave it a coin, and went to other stalls.
Once the first serving was sold, a second one was made, and with the option to sample it, many people gathered around.
Gou Sheng and Zhao Dashu were so shocked that their eyes widened, and they quickly stepped in to help.
They all thought they had no hope of selling anything today, but who would have thought that Jiang Yimian's invitation would attract so many people.
With the success of konjac, the eggs they brought, as well as some woven bamboo baskets and straw sandals, were also easily sold.
While I was collecting the money, I heard a middle-aged man ask curiously, "Why is this called konjac? Is it made from konjac fruit? I remember that stuff is poisonous. It makes your throat hurt, and in severe cases, it causes diarrhea. Is this okay to eat?"
Upon hearing this, the people who were about to buy hesitated; they dared not eat anything poisonous.
I wouldn't dare try anything that's free, let alone something that costs money.
