The child clung tightly to the wall, trying to draw some warmth from it, but the heat was too scarce. Not only did it fail to warm him up, it also let him be exposed to the cold wind from the roof.
The cold wind blowing into the room made it hard for him to open his eyes, and occasionally a lot of snowflakes were blown in, falling to the ground.
People who were already shivering from the cold huddled together even more tightly.
A voice suddenly came from the next room, tinged with worry, "All the charcoal from the estate is in this room. I hope that guy won't freeze to death. After all, he's the young master of the Marquis's mansion. If he dies, we'll all be buried with him!"
"What are you worried about? He's just an unloved young master. Look, he's been here for months, has anyone come to see him?"
They clearly never treated him like a young master. If they gave him this little bit of charcoal, we'd all freeze to death this winter.
"The people in this Marquis's mansion are really stingy. They are supposed to be a high-ranking family, yet they are so stingy when it comes to sending charcoal for the winter."
“Who says otherwise? We’re pitiful too. In the dead of winter, we have to stay in this dilapidated manor to take care of that unloved young master. If we were with that second young master, we could be comfortably staying in the manor and maybe even get some New Year’s rewards.”
"That's right. It hasn't been long, and that Marquis has already remarried. She's a heartless wretch, and her son is already the same age as her."
"Shh, keep your voice down. If others hear, you might not care about your life, but I do."
"What's there to be afraid of? There are only a few people in this manor. Who could possibly send word back to the capital? Oh, by the way, where did that gardener go? I haven't seen him all day."
The housekeeper is coming to collect his flowers; don't let him kill them.
"Why are you worrying about him? He's probably in the greenhouse. Come on, let's continue playing cards."
