Chapter 299 Repaying in Full
"I will offer corresponding stakes."
"But not now."
"Because the time is not yet right."
Bell replied in this way.
Gu Heng didn't reply, perhaps as a tacit agreement, or perhaps for some other reason.
He turned to look at the massive, hollow, blood-stained wall, unsure what this man-eating structure was thinking. The monster that had been making noises inside the gaping hole still hadn't appeared. Instead, several crooked, worm-like mutated creatures had sprouted from the edges, along with a few crimson, disgusting octopus tentacles. He stared at them for a long time before realizing they were tongues.
That really fits the atmosphere perfectly.
So it became a broken, gaping mouth, and it's unclear whether it will continue to evolve and grow a throat, stomach, or intestines. In any case, the monster's desire to swallow them whole is relentless.
Bell supported himself with his two broken arms, and it looked like he would need to wait a while longer to fully recover. An Ru thought for a moment, then stood up and walked to the desk.
Gu Heng has fallen into a daze again since hearing the words of this "key factor," and from what she knows so far, there is probably something good in the drawer of this desk.
She remained vigilant and cautiously approached the desk piled with various documents and test tubes. At first glance, there really wasn't much to loot—aside from the insect's forelimbs and Gu Heng's used-up injections, there were only some yellowed documents left—the top one was a test report for a subject called Experiment 27, which even included a photo—a girl whose appearance was as alluring as a porn star, who seemed to have participated because she suffered from an incurable genetic disease.
She turned a page, and there was a scribbled-on certificate of experimental failure—the poor girl, only sixteen or seventeen years old, had undergone five tests and was in excellent condition, according to the form—but from the photo, she looked no different from someone who was about to die.
An Ru quickly scanned the description of the experiment. It was full of technical jargon, making it difficult to understand. However, it was clear that it was some kind of secret experiment involving extracting forbidden substances directly across the wave layer, but it had failed.
She turned to another page and found a severely damaged photograph. The outlines of the people were blurred, but thankfully their faces were still clear—it was a pair of sisters, and she could tell that, of course; their innocent and intimate expressions were unmistakable.
The shorter girl in the photo looks shy, hiding to the side, and is about six or seven years old, holding a lollipop. Another child, about half a head taller than her, stands behind her, smiling at the camera.
They looked incredibly happy.
Anru looked at the bottom of the photo, where it read, "Bell and Hera, I hope you can always be happy."
She froze, her gaze fixed on the two girls, when she suddenly realized what this meant—along the way, on the glass walls, in the corridors, and on the ceiling, there were countless deformed and grotesque faces, all with the same features and the same voices, constantly crying out, "I'm so hungry" or "I'm in so much pain"... It was her plea, her suffering.
Bell Hera.
A fake product made up of two names.
A cruel farce.
An Ru felt nauseous and flipped through the pages faster and faster, but all that was displayed were more of their photos, which still looked sweet and happy.
Gu Heng suddenly laughed, then murmured, "Ah, one winter, they came into contact with a forbidden substance with terrifying properties, and then they became one with it."
"And then, the sisters became enemies."
“They both wanted to completely replace each other, but Eoubs simply couldn’t isolate them.”
"Until they were negatively affected by the Mirror of Eternal Dreams and came to Sunset Hill."
Finally, Anru found three unused "stabilizing agents" and a capsule with the same shape as the one Bell used before from the bottom drawer—she didn't know if it had any healing properties, but since it was placed here, it must be useful.
She also found a diary.
Within this chapter of memories, strewn with blood and dust, are scattered fragments of poignant sentences.
She glanced at it quickly, hoping to find some useful information, but all she could see were words about how sad a girl was and how she gradually broke down.
On the 27th day, everything changed. No matter how much I pleaded and prayed, I couldn't change this reality. Hera, my dearest sister, you are gone. My life is now colorless. Although I still exist, created by humans to dance, eat, work, talk, and be praised, I think every moment: What is the meaning of my life without you?
An Ru glanced at Belle subconsciously—the other person returned her gaze expressionlessly, knowing what she had seen, but remaining unmoved.
In her diary, her handwriting changed from elegant and fluent at first to increasingly messy later, as if she had lost her mind.
The test is getting closer and closer to success, Hera. I'm so happy! Am I really going to see you soon? Although some parts of this testing ground might seem insane, I'd risk anything to save you, even becoming a monster or falling into hell. Today I met many of the Eoubs' agents who wanted to completely reclaim the Siberian infected zone. I killed them... effortlessly. For you, it's all worth it. I love you.
An Ru was horrified. She thought to herself, "If these sisters are so loving, how could things have turned out like this? Please... no one ever told me before that the legendary B01 is a twin. This is just too damn absurd!"
She thought about it for a while, and then realized that she could actually understand this kind of madness. In the Eoubs circle, she had met many people like this. Sometimes she felt that no matter who it was, if they stayed in this hellish world for too long, they would eventually become like that.
That yearning for life is immense and terrifying, screaming like a ghost deep within the brain, making you teeter on the brink of collapse. One careless move is enough to break you.
Thinking of this, she turned to look at the two people beside her and, just as Bell had expected, began to calculate the current situation.
27 seconds later.
Well, she hadn't thought of anything. It was fucking ridiculous. Anru couldn't even tell which one was Bell and which one was Hera. If the other party told even one lie, she would be completely outmaneuvered.
"I will not harm you, whether you trust me or not."
"But I can't guarantee the same for others."
Bell looked at them, smiling so brightly.
That smile... made Anru immediately feel uneasy.
