Chapter 72, I'll promise you as long as you wake up...
"Are you Ms. Wen, his family member?"
"I am... his friend, here to sign his autograph." Wen Hanyun was still a little out of breath from running so hard.
The nurse looked puzzled, nodded, and pointed to the end of the corridor. "That's the intensive care unit. Go to the doctor's office and find the attending physician. He will explain the situation to you."
After thanking her, Wen Hanyun quickly walked towards the doctor's office.
Pushing open the door, I saw a middle-aged foreign doctor in a white coat sitting inside, looking through medical records.
"Hello doctor, I am Wen Hanyun, and I am Yansheng's friend."
The doctor looked up and heard the woman speaking fluent English. He adjusted his glasses with admiration. "You must be Miss Wen?"
“The patient’s assistant has already spoken to me on the phone. His condition is critical,” the doctor explained to her in simple terms. “The bullet pierced his skull. Although the surgery was successful, there is still a small amount of blood clots in his brain, which are compressing his nerves and causing him to fall into a deep coma.”
"When will he wake up?" Wen Hanyun asked quickly.
"It's hard to say." The doctor shook his head. "In this situation, the patient's willpower is very important. We've done all we can."
"I told Assistant Lin before that having familiar people talk to him, spend time with him, and touch him might stimulate his brain nerves and help him wake up."
"If there is no response for more than 72 hours, the probability of becoming a vegetable will greatly increase."
Wen Hanyun's heart sank to the bottom.
72 hours, which means Yansheng has at most three days.
"These are the documents for the follow-up treatment after the surgery, which you need to sign." The doctor took out a document and a pen and handed them to her. "Although the surgery is over, some auxiliary treatments may be needed afterward, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy. These all require the signatures of family members or authorized persons."
Wen Hanyun's fingertips trembled slightly as she looked at the name "Yansheng" written in the patient section of the document.
She picked up the pen and wrote her name stroke by stroke, each character as if she had used all her strength.
After she signed the papers, the doctor led her to the entrance of the intensive care unit.
Through the glass, Wen Hanyun saw Yansheng lying on the hospital bed.
He lay there quietly, his head wrapped in white bandages, revealing only a pale, bloodless face.
His usually sharp and deep eyes were tightly closed, his long eyelashes casting a shadow under his eyelids, his nose was high and straight, his lips were pale and lifeless.
He was covered in tubes connected to instruments, and cold numbers and curves flickered on the screens, the ticking sound particularly jarring in the quiet ward.
Is this the same Yan Sheng who is ruthless in the business world and sometimes strong and sometimes gentle in front of her?
That man who always shoulders everything and never easily shows weakness?
Wen Hanyun's tears welled up instantly, blurring her vision.
She covered her mouth, and although she didn't cry out, her shoulders trembled uncontrollably.
"You can go in and see him, but don't touch the equipment on his body."
The doctor patted her on the shoulder and said softly.
The nurse opened the door to the intensive care unit for her, and Wen Hanyun carefully walked in, afraid of touching something.
She walked to the bedside, slowly squatted down, and reached out to touch his cheek, but stopped the moment she touched him.
His face was cold, devoid of any warmth, like a soulless body...
The nurse seemed to understand what she was thinking and comforted her, "It's normal for a patient to have a low body temperature while receiving an IV drip."
"Yansheng..." She nodded and called softly, her voice choked with uncontrollable sobs, "Please wake up, okay?"
The person in the hospital bed did not react and remained lying quietly.
“I know it was my fault. I shouldn’t have said those harsh words to you, and I shouldn’t have just run away, leaving you alone in the hotel, drunk.”
Wen Hanyun lowered her head, tears dripping onto her clothes. "If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have come to Y country. You would never have encountered these things in China."
"It's all my fault, please wake up."
"I apologize to you..."
The instrument's sound remained steady, and Yansheng didn't even blink.
Wen Hanyun sniffed, trying to calm her emotions.
Remembering the doctor's words, she moved even closer to him.
"Yansheng...please wake up."
Wen Hanyun reached out and gently grasped his hand; the touch from his fingertips made her heart ache.
Her hands, which usually enveloped her with warmth and gentleness, were now icy cold.
"If you wake up, I'll promise you, we can be together again."
Wen Hanyun took a deep breath, as if making up her mind to stop running away from her inner feelings and to stop deceiving herself by saying she hated him...
"I'll stop dwelling on those misunderstandings, and I won't push you away anymore. As long as you don't let go, we can start over, okay?"
This was the first time she had spoken her feelings so frankly, and the first time she had let down all her guard and concerns, even while he was unconscious...
She didn't know if her words would reach his ears, if they would awaken him, but this was all she could do. All she could do was pour out all her strength and pray for a miracle...
Wen Hanyun lay by the bedside, recounting the past over and over again, expressing her thoughts, from choking back sobs to bursting into tears. When she was tired of crying, she leaned against his bedside to keep him company.
Wen Hanyun's voice was already hoarse and her eyes were red and swollen, but she still didn't stop, holding Yan Sheng's hand and unwilling to let go.
She didn't know how long she talked until her eyelids grew heavier and heavier, and she fell asleep by the bedside.
In her dazed state, she seemed to feel the hand she was holding move slightly.
At first, her heart skipped a beat.
She didn't dare move, thinking it was just her imagination.
But then, the hand moved slightly again.
She felt Yan Sheng's fingertips curl slightly, as if in response to her touch.
Wen Hanyun suddenly woke up, raised her head, and looked at the person on the hospital bed.
But his eyes remained closed, his breathing even, and even the hand she was holding showed no change, as if everything that had just happened was her illusion, a dream she had been thinking about all day...
Time passed little by little, and the sky was beginning to lighten.
After six o'clock in the morning, the shift nurse knocked on the door and came in, indicating that she could rest for a while and let the patient do the examination first.
About eight hours have passed since the doctor said it would take 72 hours, and Yansheng still shows no signs of waking up.
