Chapter 71, Shooting
Yan Sheng leaned against the headboard, his face somewhat pale.
He knew that the filthy blood of the Yan family flowed in his veins, and his self-control could not restrain the violence in his bones, which led him to hurt Wen Hanyun.
Old Master Yan was that kind of person; he treated women as playthings and had no respect for his mother or any of his female companions.
He had always thought he was different from his father, but in that moment of losing control, he clearly saw the old man's shadow in himself.
Perhaps he shouldn't have forced his way into her life in the first place.
She deserved her own life, someone better—someone who could give her warmth and respect, someone who wouldn't make her cry, not him...
Yan Sheng slowly closed his eyes.
He will forever bury this love deep in his heart and never disturb her life again.
As long as she is happy, that's all that matters, even if that happiness has nothing to do with him.
.
Finally, Wen Hanyun returned to the flower shop.
The phone screen lit up; it was a message from Wieland:
Ms. Wen, have you adjusted your mood?
I need to come back next month to start the tour again.
Wen Hanyun replied, "My flight is for tomorrow. I'll be back a week early."
This vacation was originally intended as an escape from Yansheng, a chance for her to use a new life to cover up the emotional entanglements between them.
But unexpectedly, he followed her to Country Y and left an even deeper mark on her heart.
His drunken, out-of-control gaze, his slightly aching lips, and his powerless outstretched hand in the end.
The faster Wen Hanyun said the words "I hate you," the more pain she felt in her heart.
She had seen all of Yansheng's dedication and care over the years.
But that photo of him with another woman was like a sharp thorn between their hearts, constantly reminding her that she couldn't get close.
Wen Hanyun took a deep breath, closed her nearly packed suitcase, and got up to walk to the window.
The sun was slowly setting, and the golden afterglow spilled onto the street, outlining a warm silhouette.
She told herself that it was time to put the past behind her and that her friends who cared about her were waiting for her to return.
Back home, back in the band, focused on music, everything will be alright...
Just then, her phone rang, and a familiar number appeared on the screen.
Assistant Lin?
Wen Hanyun hesitated for a moment before pressing the answer button.
"Is this Ms. Wen?" A man's anxious voice came from the other end of the phone.
"I am Assistant Lin?" Wen Hanyun frowned. "Is there something you need?"
"Miss Wen, something terrible has happened! President Yan... he's been attacked in Country Y!"
"What?" Wen Hanyun's heart clenched. "Explain yourself! What happened to Yansheng?"
"The hospital just sent a message saying he was shot in the head and is currently undergoing emergency treatment at the city's central hospital..." Assistant Lin described as calmly as possible, "The doctor said he has fallen into a deep coma, and his condition is very serious!"
Shot in the head?
Deep coma?
These words struck Wen Hanyun's heart like a heavy hammer, causing the emotions she had just painstakingly built up to collapse instantly.
The image of Yan Sheng's last look at her, and the way he staggered to sit on the edge of the bed, kept flashing through her mind.
Is it because of her?
If she hadn't suddenly broken up with him, and if she hadn't run away to country Y, Yansheng would never have come here, and he wouldn't have been shot...
“Ms. Wen, I’m currently in China, and there’s a problem with my passport. I simply can’t get there in time!” the man pleaded. “The hospital said he’s out of immediate danger, but he needs a relative or acquaintance to sign off on the next steps of his treatment.”
"Ke Yan doesn't have many acquaintances in Country Y. After thinking it over, I realized I can only turn to you!"
"Is his condition serious?" Wen Hanyun unconsciously raised her voice.
"There was a bullet very close to his temple. Although it has been temporarily removed, there is still blood stasis in his skull. Whether he can wake up depends entirely on his own willpower."
"And the doctor also said..." Assistant Lin hesitated for a moment.
"What did the doctor say?" Wen Hanyun asked anxiously.
"The doctor said he might never wake up and would become a vegetable..."
A person in a vegetative state?
Wen Hanyun felt a sudden dizziness and managed to stand up by holding onto the windowsill.
So much had happened between her and Yansheng, and she had even fallen into deep self-doubt because of him, but she never wanted anything to happen to him.
How could the person who never truly gave up on her, even after being rejected by her, just lie there without waking up?
“Miss Wen, I know you and President Yan have some misunderstandings right now, but the situation is urgent, and only you can help him!” the man pleaded urgently. “Please, can we go to the hospital right now?”
"The hospital is already providing emergency treatment. You'll need to sign the post-operative medical paperwork, and..."
"Send me the hospital address," she interrupted Assistant Lin.
Wen Hanyun took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and the image of Yan Sheng's pained eyes after she slapped him flashed through her mind.
All the resentment and dissatisfaction became insignificant in the face of the thought that "he may never wake up again."
After hanging up the phone, Wen Hanyun grabbed her wallet and phone, and rushed out of the apartment without even putting on a coat.
The evening breeze, carrying a slight chill, blew across her face, but did nothing to clear her confused mind.
She hailed a taxi and gave them the hospital address her assistant had sent her.
Urged on by her, the driver accelerated, and the car sped off towards the hospital.
Throughout the journey, Wen Hanyun gripped her phone tightly, her hands and feet icy cold.
She kept telling herself that Yansheng would be alright, that she was just going to help out, and that once he woke up, they could slowly talk things out.
However, the guilt in her heart grew stronger and stronger...
Perhaps it was because of her abrupt breakup text that Yansheng rushed to Y country to find her, and it was because she left him alone in a hotel while he was drunk that he suffered this undeserved disaster.
All of this happened so suddenly...
More than half an hour later, the taxi stopped in front of the city's central hospital.
Wen Hanyun pulled out a few banknotes and placed them on the passenger seat. Then, without even closing the car door, she practically ran into the hospital lobby.
"Hello, may I ask which ward Mr. Yansheng is in?"
She grabbed the nurse on the night shift and asked urgently.
The nurse was startled by her panting and quickly took her to the nurses' station to check the computer. "Patient's name: Yansheng?"
"We found out, he's waiting in the operating room."
"His assistant made the call a few minutes ago, saying someone would come over to sign..."
