Chapter 100: Beaten to Death

Chapter 100: Beaten to Death

Hearing her gentle words, Shao Chengrui straightened his back, lowered his eyes, and didn't dare to look at her face.

"Thank you for your kind words, young lady."

Seeing his expression, Ye Yunxin's eyes flickered, and she automatically started a conversation: "I heard that you are from Pingyao County, young master. I wonder if there is anything fun to do there?"

Shao Chengrui lowered his eyes and answered methodically, "Pingyao County has beautiful mountains and clear waters, and pleasant scenery. It is a good place to live for a long time."

"Hearing you say that, I should go to Pingyao County to stay for a while. I wonder if you would be willing to accompany me?" Ye Yunxin's lips curled into a perfectly timed smile as she stared intently at his face.

“I’m sorry, young lady, I still need to prepare for the imperial examination and really can’t spare the time to accompany you.” Shao Chengrui’s eyes remained fixed on the floor. “If you need someone to keep you company, you can go to the county government office to find someone to accompany you.”

This answer was completely devoid of emotion.

Ye Yunxin's eyes twitched as she listened to this, unsure how to continue the conversation.

Oh well, she brought this on herself.

I caught a glimpse of his face on the street that day.

Upon returning home and investigating, he discovered that the man was a renowned scholar, which further captivated him.

If he weren't handsome and talented, a perfect husband material, she wouldn't have begged her father to let her see him.

Before she could think of a topic to talk about, Shao Chengrui immediately bowed and said, "It's getting late, and I have to set off back to Pingyao County today, so I'll take my leave now. I hope you will tell Governor Ye to thank him for organizing the banquet."

Ye Yunxin opened her mouth, then closed it again.

At this point, she knew she shouldn't try to keep him any longer, so she smiled and saw him off.

Looking at that tall figure, and remembering how he had been afraid to look her in the eye for fear of offending her, her cheeks flushed.

This person is truly an excellent person.

After walking out the gate, Shao Chengrui didn't stop and ran back to the inn, urging his family to pack their things quickly so they could rush back to Pingyao County.

He's really not good at handling these kinds of situations, so he'd better avoid them.

Jingwu noticed something was off about his bright red ears and his impatient tone.

Fearing something might go wrong, she sat in the back of the carriage and quickly calculated with her fingers. After learning the reason for the matter, she almost burst out laughing.

Jingwu wiped his mouth with a handkerchief, trying to hide the smile on his lips.

She took a closer look at her older cousin; he had regular features, a tall stature, and an aura of clarity surrounding him.

No wonder Miss Ye fell in love at first sight. With such looks and talent, she would be a prominent figure even in the capital.

Jingwu was extremely curious, so he secretly did some calculations and instantly had an answer.

The family traveled for three days and three nights before finally returning to Pingyao County and their home.

After getting off the carriage, Jingwu felt a pain in his buttocks, so he quickly went back to his room and rubbed his sore back and buttocks.

She lay on the bed and fell asleep without realizing it.

When she woke up again, it was already late morning of the next day.

During this time, Yao Chenbi came to call her for dinner. He knocked on the door more than a dozen times, but when no one answered, he went in to check and was immediately hit with a pillow.

She immediately dared not say another word and left.

Jingwu sat at the dining table, eating breakfast while listening to Yao Chenbi's accusations, and touched his nose somewhat guiltily.

She opened her mouth, wanting to defend herself, but before she could speak, she felt a pang of guilt and closed her mouth again.

Jingwu silently finished his breakfast and went to set up his stall on South Street without saying a word.

She had barely sat down when a group of people immediately surrounded her.

Soon, a man sat down in front of her.

He let out a deep sigh as soon as he opened his mouth.

Jingwu looked up at him and saw that he was tall and his muscles were covered by black clothes.

She looked at his clothes and immediately recognized them as those worn by the bodyguards from the security company on the street.

She raised an eyebrow and looked at him: "What do you want to be called?"

The man's name was Cui Yi, he was over forty years old, and he worked as a bodyguard in a security escort agency.

He has a wife, sons, and daughters, and his income is decent; he lives a very happy and fulfilling life.

Not long ago, he dreamed of his deceased mother for several days in a row.

In his dream, the old man stared at him with tears in his eyes, repeatedly saying "Go."

When Cui Yi first dreamed about it, he didn't take it seriously. But when he dreamed about it again the following night, he started to have doubts.

On the third night, he asked his mother what those two words meant.

The old man still had tears in his eyes, and kept muttering the words "Go."

He dreamt about it for several nights in a row, and every night Cui Yi asked the old man, but the old man only said two words.

He couldn't figure it out, so after discussing it with his wife, they decided to ask a master for advice.

His wife said there was a particularly effective master on South Street, and suggested he come over and try his luck, hoping to catch the master setting up his stall.

So he got up very early and came to South Street.

He was really lucky to run into the master; he had just arrived when the master set up his stall.

Cui Yi looked at the girl in front of him, sighed deeply, and after finishing his explanation, immediately asked, "Master, what do you think my mother means?"

Jingwu lowered his eyes and calculated with his fingers, then raised his eyes and asked, "Do you have a younger sister?"

Cui Yi paused slightly, then nodded: "Yes, I have a younger sister who is five years younger than me. Is my mother missing my sister?"

His younger sister's name is Cui Tao. Her mother loved eating peaches when she was pregnant with her, so she gave her that name.

Cui Tao is in her thirties this year. When she was a teenager, she broke off ties with her family because she insisted on marrying a peddler from the next county. Even after her parents passed away, she never came back.

Cui Yi harbored some resentment towards his younger sister, after all, his mother had murmured her name before she died.

He blamed his sister for being heartless, saying that his mother died with her eyes wide open in disbelief.

"No, the old lady wants you to go and save her."

Upon hearing this, Cui Yi's eyes widened instantly. After several seconds of reaction, he stammered, "Master, what did you just say?"

“I said, your mother wants you to go to your sister’s house to rescue her.” Jingwu repeated what he had just said.

"Why save her?" Upon hearing this, Cui Yi became anxious instantly, frantically twisting his clothes with both hands: "Master, what happened to Xiao Tao'er? Did something happen to her?"

Jingwu nodded: "If you don't go to save her, your sister will be beaten to death by her husband."

"Beat, beat to death? How could that be?" Cui Yi could hardly believe his ears. Ever since his sister got married, he would always inquire about his sister's family whenever he passed through the neighboring county.

Over the years, every time I've inquired, the news I've heard is that my sister is happy and well.

How could he be killed now?
