Chapter 101: Go for it!
Seeing the change in his expression, Jingwu guessed what he was thinking and spoke up.
"When Cui Tao got married, did she not receive a single penny of dowry from her family?"
Cui Yi nodded: "Yes, back then, Xiao Tao'er had a big fight with her parents. Her father got angry and broke off relations with her. His intention was to force her to give up the idea of marrying the peddler, but he didn't expect that the girl was determined to marry him. She didn't take a penny from the family and left with the peddler."
He sighed deeply. At that time, no one in the family could persuade his sister.
"It's not that we don't want her to marry, it's just that the peddler's family is really poor. They live in such a small house, with four generations crammed together. The peddler is the eldest son in his family, and he has two younger brothers. If Xiao Tao'er marries into that family, she will definitely have to work very hard. We can't bear to see her suffer, that's why we don't want her to marry."
"When Cui Tao arrived home without any dowry, her family treated her very badly. Her mother-in-law tormented her, making her chop wood and fetch water on the second day of the wedding. Her sisters-in-law made things difficult for her, constantly trying to trip her up. She regretted her marriage on the second day, but she held a grudge and refused to go back to her parents' home."
Jingwu spoke slowly, picked up the teacup beside him, and took a small sip.
"What about the peddler? People are bullying his wife, and he doesn't do anything about it?" Hearing this, Cui Yi imagined the scene and felt a pang of heartache.
Jingwu raised his eyes, looking at the person in front of him with a half-smile: "At first, he did try to manage things, but later, after Cui Tao was tortured until she was old and faded, he gradually lost patience. At this time, he met another woman outside, whose family background and appearance are better than your sister's, and he is thinking about how to divorce his wife and marry someone else."
How dare he?
“He’s so audacious in doing whatever he wants just because Cui Tao has severed ties with her family.” Jingwu looked at the man whose face was flushed with anger and said softly, “Not long ago, your sister found out about this woman and went to see her. Later, when the peddler found out, he beat her up.”
Cui Yi jumped to his feet, his eyes blazing with rage: "Damn it, does he really think I'm dead? How dare he bully my sister like this! I'll beat him to death!"
Jingwu glanced at the time and said to the person in front of him, "Go quickly! Before dark, you might still be able to save your sister's life."
Upon hearing this, Cui Yi immediately left in a hurry.
He hurried back to the escort agency, grabbed a fast horse, and rushed to the neighboring county, finding his sister's husband's family before nightfall.
Cui Yi knocked loudly on his sister's door. A young woman came out to open it, looked him up and down, and looked at him with a hint of doubt in her eyes. She obviously didn't recognize him.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Cui Tao's brother. Make her come out to see me." Cui Yi stood with his hands on his hips, his cold expression quite intimidating.
The woman who opened the door was the peddler's second son's wife. She was a little guilty, shrank her neck, and stammered.
"She's not home. Come back another day."
As he spoke, he was about to close the door.
Cui Yi slammed his hand on the door, stopping her from closing it.
His face was icy cold, his brows furrowed, and his eyes widened in anger: "My in-laws have come to visit, aren't you going to invite me in for a cup of tea?"
The second son's wife was so frightened by his words that she staggered back several steps, glancing at the woodshed in the house, feeling extremely guilty.
Her eyes darted around, avoiding eye contact with the person in front of her.
"There's really no room to move around in the house. Please come over after your parents-in-law come back tonight."
Cui Yi blocked the door, preventing her from closing it. The guilty look on the person in front of him made him extremely flustered.
Just as he was about to say something, he heard a woman scream from inside the house.
His face paled, and ignoring the woman's attempts to stop him, he pushed her aside and walked toward the direction from which the sound came.
When the second son's wife saw him barge in, she immediately shouted, "Brother Cui Tao, what are you doing? How could you barge in like that?"
The shout was clearly heard by the people inside the house.
Cui Yi ignored her nonsense, kicked open the door to the woodshed, and went inside. In the dim light, he saw the peddler standing in the room, his eyes darting around erratically.
"Brother-in-law..." The peddler recognized Cui Yi and immediately bowed and called out.
"Where is my sister?" Cui Yi frowned, ignoring his empty talk, and immediately questioned him.
"Xiao Tao is out and not home. Why don't you come back in a few days, brother-in-law?"
The peddler was handsome with delicate features, and had a very effeminate look. His smiling demeanor as he spoke only made Cui Yi more annoyed.
"Where did she go?" Cui Yi scanned the woodshed, as if searching for a figure. "Isn't she going home today?"
"She went to her best friend's house to admire the flowers, and just now she sent word that she will be staying there for two nights." The peddler stepped forward and stood in front of the man: "If you, brother-in-law, would like to stay, that's fine, but my house is small, so I'll have to trouble you to make a bed on the floor."
Cui Yi frowned, clearly not believing him. Just as he was about to press for an explanation, he heard a faint noise coming from a corner.
He immediately walked in that direction, but after taking only two steps, he was blocked by someone.
"Brother-in-law, there might be rats over there. It's better not to offend your eyes." The peddler reached out and pulled the man in front of him, trying to pull him out of the woodshed.
Unexpectedly, no matter how hard they pulled, they couldn't budge the person in front of them; the person was like a boulder, completely immovable.
Seeing his actions, Cui Yi guessed what was going on, broke free from his hand, and quickly walked in that direction.
As he approached, he smelled a faint scent of blood.
Cui Yi was in a panic. He untied the bundle of firewood and immediately saw a figure covered in blood.
His trembling hand looked at her face, only to find that the person in front of him was his younger sister, Cui Tao.
"Little Peach!"
Cui Yi frantically carried his younger sister out. In the light, he saw that she had a bruised and swollen face, covered in wounds, and her clothes were stained with blood.
His eyes reddened, and he called out again and again, "Tao'er, little Tao'er, it's your brother."
Seeing that the person in his arms was unresponsive, he immediately picked them up and ran outside.
Cui Yi carried his younger sister and ran all the way down the street before finally finding a clinic.
They quickly carried their younger sister inside and got the doctor to treat her.
"Tsk tsk." The doctor sighed as he examined the wounds and applied medicine. "This girl is covered in injuries. Who did she offend to be so cruel? If it had been any later, she probably would have bled to death."
Cui Yi stood outside the screen, listening to these words with a heavy heart.
A grown man, his eyes red and his head bowed, tears streaming down his face.
