Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Unresolved Hatred
Upon hearing this, Shi Ruixing's heart skipped a beat.
Zhanghe River is the river in the suburbs where Qiao Ya asked me to release lanterns last night.
She entered the house, bowed to the two women, and hurriedly asked, "Grandmother, Mother, what happened over the Zhanghe River?"
"Last night, some girl left her lantern by the haystack by the river, which started a fire and burned down the entire grassy area. Luckily, the river is in the suburbs, and no one goes there to release lanterns. Otherwise, I really don't know how many people would have died."
Upon hearing her mother's words, Shi Ruixing's legs went weak, and she slumped into a chair, muttering repeatedly, "Thank goodness, thank goodness."
Luckily, I listened to that girl last night and didn't go to the countryside to release lanterns; I went home early, otherwise...
She couldn't help but feel a lingering fear. After calming down, she sent her servants to inquire about the girl's whereabouts from last night, intending to go and thank her.
Inside the inn, Jingwu was awakened by a burst of crying.
Still grumpy from waking up, I opened the door and saw the maid who had been by Madam Ye's side yesterday kneeling and crying at the door of the next room.
Upon seeing this, Jingwu immediately planned to close the door, turn around, and go back to sleep.
When the maid saw her, she rushed over and blocked the door.
“Young lady, the old lady’s words yesterday were inappropriate. I hope you will be magnanimous and not take it to heart. Please also persuade Young Master Yue not to damage the harmony between our two families.”
Jingwu was now completely awake. She looked at the person in front of her and said, "Your old lady refuses to admit that she killed her elder sister. Even the most powerful sorcerer can't do anything about it. Besides, what you did back then is what you are now experiencing. When your old lady did this, she already knew that she would be haunted by ghosts, so she went to ask for a peace talisman, which has protected her for so many years."
However, this matter was accidentally discovered by her sister's only daughter. Wanting to avenge her mother, she switched the amulets, which is why she was haunted by the ghost.
"girl......"
Jingwu blinked at her and said, "Your matriarch sent you to invite Yue Huai, not me."
After saying that, he closed the door.
She's not stupid. The Ye family didn't invite her, didn't pay her, and the old lady even looked down on her. Why would she rush to help her?
Jingwu set up a protective barrier, lay back on the bed, and prepared to take another nap.
The maid outside had no choice but to kneel down at Yue Huai's door again and plead for mercy.
She was helpless. The old lady was so frightened by a ghost last night that she fainted. This morning, when the servants went to wake her up, they saw the purplish-blue marks left on her neck.
The master and mistress were terrified and told me to hurry up and invite Yue Huai back, otherwise I'd be punished again.
Yue Huai was also very clever; he set up a barrier and then went back to sleep.
At noon, Jingwu woke up. She rubbed her eyes and was about to go downstairs for lunch when she opened the door and saw the maid still kneeling at the door next door.
She rubbed her eyes, walked past her, and went downstairs to eat.
As he walked up to her, the door next door suddenly opened, and Yue Huai came out.
When the maid saw that he had finally opened the door, she immediately went to him.
"Young Master Yue, please come back with me and save our old lady."
Yue Huai twitched the corner of his mouth. This old lady was cunning and arrogant, and he really didn't want to go.
He watched as the maid staggered to her feet, thought for a moment, and then said, "I'll go with you after I finish my meal."
He was dissatisfied with Madam Ye, and there was really no need for the maid to be punished as well.
"Thank you, Young Master Yue."
Yue Huai followed Jing Wu downstairs and ordered a few dishes from the restaurant.
He then looked at her and asked, "Would you like to come along?"
"She didn't invite me."
"Wouldn't it be a wasted trip if you didn't go?" Yue Huai looked at the person in front of him and poured her a cup of tea.
Upon hearing this, Jingwu understood what he meant. If he didn't go, he wouldn't gain any merit, and the trip would be in vain.
She twitched the corners of her mouth, feeling it wasn't worth it.
Yue Huai took out a purse and placed it in front of her: "If you leave, this is yours."
Jingwu took it and opened it, and found that it contained a Qi Gathering Pill, which could gather the spiritual energy of heaven and earth.
A slight smile played on her lips; it was just what she needed.
"Alright then, I'll go with you again."
Yue Huai smiled and lowered his eyes when he saw that she had agreed.
After the two finished their meal, they went to the Ye family with the maid.
As soon as I stepped out of the restaurant, I saw a horse-drawn carriage.
The maidservant quickly led the two into the carriage, showing them the utmost respect.
Seeing this, Jingwu raised an eyebrow and got into the carriage.
She watched as the maidservant followed her in, pouring tea and bringing out snacks, being very attentive in serving her.
Jingwu and Yue Huai both silently looked away.
Soon, they arrived at the Ye residence.
The two got off the carriage and walked into the courtyard from yesterday.
As soon as I entered, a square-faced man with a serious expression greeted me.
"Young Master Yue."
Yue Huai clearly recognized the man and nodded slightly: "Governor Ye."
“I wrote to your uncle yesterday, saying we should get together sometime.” Governor Ye’s lips curled up slightly, then he added, “My mother said something inappropriate yesterday, please don’t take it to heart.”
"She didn't offend me, but my fellow Daoist."
Governor Ye, realizing what had happened, immediately said to Jingwu, "Young lady, please be magnanimous and don't hold yesterday's events against you. Later, I will have someone prepare some hairpins and jewelry as an apology."
He wasn't home yesterday. The housekeeper said that Yue Huai is very fond of this girl, so she must be his sweetheart.
He looked Yue Huai up and down, and couldn't help but sigh inwardly, "Yue Huai really has a unique eye for talent."
Jingwu noticed his scrutiny and his lips twitched. "No need, I don't need those. Please take us to see your old lady as soon as possible."
Governor Ye was surprised by her refusal, but he didn't say much. He chuckled twice and led the two into the house.
As soon as Jingwu entered the house, he smelled a strong yin energy.
Looking up, I met a pair of scarlet eyes.
“Please look, this morning when the servants came to wake my mother, they saw these pinch marks on her.”
Governor Ye lifted the bed curtains and pointed to the dark purple marks on the neck of the unconscious old lady.
Jingwu leaned closer for a look and immediately knew that it was left by a ghost.
"Please, both of you, save my mother. I'll give you any amount of silver you can give." Governor Ye saw that neither of them responded, and then said, "I already know what the two masters predicted yesterday. Once my mother wakes up, I will make sure she kneels before her aunt's memorial tablet to beg for forgiveness."
Jingwu looked at the wisp of spirit on the roof beam and asked, "Are you satisfied?"
The ghost above shook its head.
Governor Ye, unaware of who she was talking to, looked up as well, only to find the roof beams completely empty.
What are you doing here?
Yue Huai reached out and touched his forehead, giving him the ability to see ghosts.
When Governor Ye opened his eyes, he saw a woman whose face resembled his mother's when she was young, standing on the roof beam.
His face was deathly pale, and he glared fiercely at us.
I was startled and staggered a couple of steps, almost falling to the ground.
"This, this..."
"This is your aunt, Wu Jia."
Upon hearing this, Governor Ye's eyes widened in disbelief; he never imagined he would see a ghost in his entire life.
He immediately tugged at Yue Huai's sleeve: "Young Master Yue, you must get rid of her quickly!"
Yue Huai pulled his clothes back and said calmly, "What goes around comes around. She harbors resentment. Even if I drive her away, she will come back."
Wu Jia floated down from the pillar and looked at the unconscious person lying on the bed, her eyes filled with hatred.
She had never wronged her younger sister, yet this sister had caused her death and tormented her daughter, allowing her to be bullied by the servants in the mansion. If it weren't for her countless secret protections, her daughter would have died in childhood.
How could she not feel resentment and hatred?
Thinking of this, a fire ignited in her heart, and her reason was gradually consumed by hatred. The yin energy around her surged, and she was on the verge of going berserk.
Jingwu looked at her and immediately began chanting the Heart-Cleansing Mantra.
The pleasant voice reached everyone's ears, gradually calming her down.
Jingwu looked at her and shook his head: "It's not worth ruining your chance to be reborn in the next life for her."
Wu Jia gradually calmed down, looking at the person in front of her with reddened eyes.
“But the hatred in my heart is hard to let go. If she could treat my daughter well, I would let her go. But she married my daughter off to an alcoholic and abusive man. My daughter has been living in misery every day since the marriage. After being beaten, she would come home to them crying, but they would turn a blind eye to her.”
