Chapter Thirty-Nine: Demanding the Dowry Back
Wu Jia's voice trembled, her hands clenched tightly as she glared at the man beside her: "You've already risen to the rank of a second-grade governor, yet you don't stand up for your sister! What kind of official are you?"
Upon hearing this, Governor Ye, wanting to quickly quell the anger of the ghost in front of him, immediately said, "Aunt, don't worry, I will immediately send someone to bring my sister back and make her divorce. The Ye family will definitely support my sister for the rest of her life."
Upon hearing this, Wu Jia's expression relaxed slightly: "I remember I kept a lot of dowry. Take out all of that dowry and give it to my daughter. When she got married, you only gave her two boxes of dowry, which caused her to be mistreated by her in-laws."
Upon hearing this, Governor Ye felt a jolt in his heart and inwardly cursed his mother for being too ruthless.
Immediately, she nodded in agreement: "Okay, I'll do whatever my aunt says."
Wu Jia looked at him and gave a slight smile: "Let's do it now."
Governor Ye was taken aback, not expecting the ghost to be in such a hurry. He then summoned his steward and ordered him to search the storeroom.
The butler looked at him with a troubled expression and said in a low voice, "The old lady has always kept the dowry list of the former madam."
Governor Ye frowned and summoned his mother's personal maid: "Go and find the list of the former lady's dowry."
His personal maid looked at him, seemingly wanting to say something but holding back.
"Speak your mind."
"The old lady had already distributed the former wife's dowry to the various households."
Upon hearing this, Governor Ye's heart skipped a beat. He hurriedly went back to check on the ghost and, seeing that she was about to go berserk again, immediately said, "Then use the things from the central government to make up for it. Make sure to complete everything on the dowry list."
"Yes." The personal maid immediately went to do so.
Seeing the decisive and efficient manner of the person in front of her, Wu Jia's expression softened, and she floated to the side to wait.
Seeing this, Jingwu walked to the bedside, took out a pill from the medicine bottle, and fed it to the old lady.
"Hey! What are you feeding the old lady?"
The personal maid saw it and immediately cried out.
Jingwu glanced at her, lifted the old lady's chin, and made her swallow the pill: "The Resurrection Pill."
The maid was about to say something more when she saw the young man beside her leaning closer.
"You know how to refine a resurrection pill?"
Jingwu nodded and then said, "Yes, but I don't have a pill refining furnace right now. These are the three pills I brought from the temple."
If it weren't for the fact that the old lady was too old and might not survive such an ordeal, she wouldn't have been willing to give her the Rejuvenation Pill.
Yue Huai nodded and then remained silent, pondering whether he should bring a pill-refining furnace from his own home for her.
Soon, Madam Ye woke up, glanced over, and then fell into a deep sleep again.
Seeing that she was alright, Jingwu stopped paying attention to her and sat down on a chair nearby.
It took the steward two hours of fussing in the courtyard to finally gather all the items on the dowry list.
Upon seeing this, Governor Ye immediately ordered them to move to the courtyard where his sister used to live.
“No need. I have another courtyard. You can move all these things to that courtyard. I want Min’er to no longer live under someone else’s roof.” Wu Jia said, while secretly planning how to get more for her daughter.
Governor Ye was at a loss for words and immediately ordered someone to take action.
Soon, Wu Jia's daughter, Ye Min, was brought back.
She was still puzzled when she entered the courtyard, wondering why the Ye family had suddenly agreed to let her divorce and had even respectfully brought her back.
When she stopped and saw that figure, she understood why.
Ye Min was bullied by servants since she was a child. Once, after falling into the water, she woke up to find her mother by her side, but she could not hug her. She then realized that her mother had died and had become a ghost by her side.
She kept this secret all along, never daring to speak out even when bullied. She was afraid that if her father and aunt found out, they would hire a master to beat her mother to a pulp.
So even now, she has never spoken of this matter.
Ye Min learned that her mother had been murdered by her aunt after her husband got drunk several times.
After learning that her mother couldn't get close to her aunt because of the amulet, she went home and cried, then replaced her amulet.
"Mother..."
Wu Jia looked at her daughter, floated to her side, and smiled: "Min'er, from now on you will move into your mother's house. You will no longer have to be subservient to others."
Upon hearing this, Ye Min sensed something was amiss and instinctively reached out to tug at her sleeve, only to find nothing.
Wu Jia saw through her daughter's thoughts and continued with a smile, "Min'er, it's all my fault for wasting half your life. But it's not too late now. Take my dowry and live a good life. Be good, I'm going to reincarnate now."
Ye Min's eyes were red with tears, and she was very reluctant to part with her mother, but there was nothing she could do. She knew that humans and ghosts were different, and her mother could no longer stay with her.
Wu Jia sighed, watching her daughter move into her villa with the help of the Ye family, and only then did she feel relieved and floated over to Yue Huai's side.
"Take me away with you."
Yue Huai nodded and put her into his Qiankun bag.
Governor Ye breathed a heavy sigh of relief after seeing the ghost disappear.
He looked at the person in front of him, forced himself to exchange a few pleasantries, and then had the butler hand him the payment.
Yue Huai took the small wooden box, said a few words to him casually, and then turned and left with Jing Wu.
When he returned to the inn, he opened the wooden box and saw that there were one hundred taels of silver inside. He then took out fifty taels and gave them to the person in front of him.
Jingwu accepted it without hesitation, after all, he couldn't have made a wasted trip.
Looking at her, Yue Huai couldn't help but smile: "The manager of the jewelry store has already delivered all the things you bought yesterday to the inn. I had the waiter put them in your room. Don't forget when you go back."
Jingwu then realized that he had forgotten the things he had left at the jewelry store yesterday.
"Okay, thank you."
Upon receiving such thanks, Yue Huai blushed and smiled somewhat embarrassedly: "No need, as fellow Daoists, it is only right to help."
Jingwu didn't say anything more, thinking that he had been away for two days and it was time to go back.
"I'm about to head back to Pingyao County. What about you?"
Upon hearing this, Yue Huai felt a pang of reluctance and replied, "I have other matters to attend to here. I'll come to Pingyao County to find you later."
"Hmm?" Jingwu looked at him in confusion. What did he want with him?
Yue Huai realized what he had said and immediately coughed lightly, saying, "I heard that the Jing family once offended the princess, so I thought I would ask you to find out."
Jingwu nodded, understanding. Then, remembering the princess's request for him to examine the crown prince's leg, he asked, "Is the current crown prince also your cousin?"
Yue Huai nodded: "Yes, he and the princess are both born to the Empress."
