Chapter Sixty-Three: Possessing a Treasure is a Crime
Jingwu looked around and then shook his head: "There's nothing dirty in the room."
"Then... what's wrong with my husband?" Madam Yu immediately asked anxiously.
Jingwu walked towards the man and saw that his eyes were glazed over, his face was full of fear, and he was muttering to himself.
"Don't come any closer! Don't come any closer! Ah!" Yu Run waved his hands at the open space in front of him, as if trying to drive away something, and cried out loudly, "My life isn't over yet! You can't take me away! Go away! Go away!"
Upon seeing his appearance, Jingwu immediately thought of a spell called the Illusion Spell.
It is made by mixing the oil from the corpses of five kinds of animals with pollen and insect eggs. Then, a talisman with the birth date and time written on it is burned and mixed into the oil.
Seven days later, the prepared substance is applied to a person's skin, which will induce hallucinations.
Orthodox practitioners generally disdain using such evil arts, but some unorthodox practitioners will use them to harm people.
Thinking of this, Jingwu looked at the person in front of him and frowned, seeing a cause and effect in his face.
She quickly calculated and instantly understood the cause and effect.
Jingwu took a deep breath and was about to speak when a servant carrying tea pushed open the door and walked in.
He had delicate features and a slender build, looking no more than sixteen or seventeen years old.
His eyes were lifeless. After putting down the tea, he quickly glanced at the room and then walked out.
“Your room is very clean, there’s nothing dirty here. He was under some kind of illusion spell, that’s why he saw these strange things.” Jingwu watched the servant leave, then walked over to him: “This is your husband getting his just deserts.”
"What do you mean by that?" Upon hearing this, Madam Yu's face turned cold, and she looked like she was about to explode, but then she remembered some things that had happened before and immediately asked, "Master, can this matter be resolved?"
Jingwu glanced at her and scoffed, "Fine, we need to find the person behind this. Think carefully about what sins your husband has committed over the years."
Mrs. Yu paced around the room, her fingers constantly fiddling with the Hetian jade bracelet on her wrist.
She tentatively began, "A few years ago, my husband took a fancy to a beautiful widow and intended to take her into the household as a concubine. But the widow refused and, being strong-willed, she killed herself by banging her head against a wall."
Hearing this, Jingwu raised an eyebrow: "Whether it was a hit-and-run or Yu Run accidentally pushed him to death, don't you two understand in your hearts?"
Upon hearing this, Madam Yu immediately said anxiously, "It's true that my husband accidentally pushed him, and we know we were wrong. We even compensated that family with fifty taels of silver afterwards. That family clearly said they wouldn't pursue the matter any further, so why, why are they casting a curse on my husband?"
Jingwu sat down in the chair and shook his head: "It's not about that."
"Huh?" Madam Yu was taken aback, then asked, "Which matter?"
Jingwu didn't speak, but picked up his teacup and took a sip.
"Well... not long ago, when we were going out, a girl bumped into my husband. My husband got angry and kicked her out. I never expected that she would be so unlucky; she died on the spot..."
Looking at the master's increasingly cold face, Madam Yu felt somewhat less confident.
"No." Jingwu closed his eyes, looked at the person in front of him, and coldly reminded him: "Five years ago, a scholar named Tong Yi."
Upon hearing the name, Madam Yu stood there and thought about it carefully before finally remembering the person.
The scholar came from a poor family, but his ancestors had left him a thriving shop. Yu Run wanted to buy the shop, but the scholar refused to budge...
That summer, Tong Yi was knocked unconscious while walking down the street. When she woke up, she found herself lying in a boudoir with a naked woman beside her.
He panicked instantly. Before he could figure out what was going on, someone kicked the door open and came in.
Tong Yi looked up and saw Yu Run, who had forced him to sell the shop inherited from his ancestors a few days ago.
He assumed this man was there to buy his shop again, so his face darkened. Just as he was about to speak, he was knocked to the ground with a stick.
Yu Run walked up to him with a cocky air and stepped on his chest: "You hypocritical poor scholar, you dare to sleep with my woman, are you tired of living?"
"Wh...what?" A hint of panic flashed in Tong Yi's eyes, and then she looked at the luxurious decorations and felt a bad premonition.
"What else do you dare ask?" Yu Run increased the pressure of his foot, and seeing the person beneath him cough twice, he said with a hint of disdain, "I'll give you two choices. First, you give me the shop your ancestors left you, and this matter will be over. Second, I'll send you to the authorities and charge you with adultery. Choose."
Upon hearing this, Tong Yi immediately realized that the person in front of him had come for that shop again.
But he had studied hard for over twenty years, and his family was barely making ends meet with the rent from this shop. How could he possibly sell it?
"Well? Have you made up your mind yet?" Yu Run increased the pressure on his foot, chuckling as he looked at the man's pained expression. "How about I help you choose? You give me the shop, I'll give you ten taels of silver, and I'll also give you this concubine, how about that?"
Tong Yi's face flushed red, and she immediately retorted, "You're the one who had me knocked unconscious! I didn't do anything with her! The magistrate will definitely clear my name!"
Yu Run chuckled lightly. Seeing that he was unmoved by reason, he gave the servant a look and sent him to the county government office.
Tong Yi was first imprisoned for three days, and then dragged to court and punished with eighty strokes of the cane for adultery.
As he lay dying, the bailiffs pulled his hand and made him press his fingerprints onto two pieces of paper.
The magistrate immediately declared that Tong Yi had committed adultery with Yu Run's concubine and ordered him to compensate Yu Run with the family's shops.
Only then did he realize that the two had been in cahoots all along.
He held onto a grudge, thinking that revenge is a dish best served cold. He planned to come back and settle scores with those two after high school.
But Yu Run had no intention of letting him leave the county government office alive. That very night, he sent poisoned food, which killed him.
The official statement was that he committed suicide out of shame.
Madam Yu snapped out of her reverie, her face grim: "Master, are you talking about the curse that poor scholar cast on my husband? But isn't he dead?"
Jingwu chuckled and looked at the person in front of him: "He is indeed dead, but he had offspring. After Yu Run killed him, he seized the shop that his family relied on for their livelihood and didn't give his wife and children a single penny..."
"It's his son!" Madam Yu exclaimed immediately, then turned to the butler and said, "Go and find out where that mother and son are!"
"What will you do if I find out?" Jingwu slowly looked at the person in front of him: "Will you wipe them out completely, or will you offer compensation?"
"This..." Madam Yu's eyes flickered, and she said softly, "How can a woman like me make decisions about these things? Why don't you cure my husband first, Master? Then we can discuss what to do."
