Linghu Ning frowned.
“Your Highness, the war between Northern Chu and Eastern Ying is imminent. You cannot stand idly by. Otherwise, think of the Grand Madam and the younger generation of the Linghu family who are still in Northern Chu.” Amber raised her chin, threateningly.
Amber handed Linghu Ning a bottle: "This contains colorless and odorless poison. As long as you find a way to get the Japanese emperor to drink it, the Crown Princess will definitely remember your kindness."
After saying that, Amber bowed and withdrew.
Linghu Ning glanced at the white bottle on the table, her eyes almost overflowing with sarcasm, but it vanished without a trace when Chan'er pushed the door open and entered, replaced by a conflicted and helpless expression.
Chan'er pretended not to understand: "Your Highness, would you like something to eat?"
"Let the small kitchen do it."
"yes."
Linghu Ning sent Chan'er away and sat alone by the window, gazing at the crabapple blossoms filling the sky, their fragrance delightful.
The desserts were ready quickly.
Linghu Ning took a small sip and then put it down.
"Does Your Highness seem troubled, or is she having a poor appetite?" Chan'er asked.
She shook her head, rubbing her temples without saying a word: "Summon Physician Li later."
"Is Your Majesty unwell?"
"Um."
...
Long Hall
The Japanese emperor sat on the dragon throne with a stern face, looking at the memorial in his hand for a full half hour, but he couldn't understand a single word.
"Your Majesty, Consort Shu must be a spy from Northern Chu. You can no longer tolerate her like this."
Consort Xian arrived gracefully in a crimson dress, earnestly advising, "There are so many cooks in the palace, yet you chose to take a liking to me, simply to alienate me from you."
The virtuous concubine mumbled a whole bunch of reasons.
The Japanese emperor lowered his eyes, his fingertips clenched so tightly they turned white.
"Your Majesty, my second and third brothers died in the Northern Chu territory. Northern Chu is our enemy. The Crown Princess of Northern Chu is treacherous and cunning; there's nothing she wouldn't do. And think of Miss Xu, such a kind person. After returning to Northern Chu, she became a wicked and immoral villain, and in the end, she didn't even save her own life." Consort Xian said displeased.
After listening for most of the hour, the Emperor of Dongying rubbed his temples, feeling somewhat irritated. He hadn't noticed anything unusual while spending time with Linghu Ning these past few days.
Besides, Linghu Ning has already lost her memory.
Not only that, Linghu Ning also occasionally drew blood.
It's impossible that she didn't reveal a single flaw right under her nose.
"Does Your Majesty dare to make a bet with me?" Consort Xian asked angrily, raising her chin.
The Emperor of Dongying glanced at Consort Xian: "What are we betting on?"
"Let's bet on whether Consort Shu has any ulterior motives towards the Emperor."
Upon hearing this, the Emperor of Dongying showed a hint of amusement on his face. After thinking for a moment, he nodded and said, "As Consort Xian would."
One hour later
A messenger from Jingyang Palace reported that Consort Shu was unwell and had summoned the imperial physician.
The Emperor of Dongying's eyelids twitched, and the worry that had just surfaced on his face was quickly suppressed when he caught sight of the Consort Xian's disdainful expression. He simply replied with a faint "I know."
They waited until evening.
The imperial physician rushed back and was invited into the palace by a young eunuch.
"Imperial Physician Li, what does Consort Shu want with you?" Consort Xian asked impatiently.
The imperial physician knelt on the ground and truthfully replied, "Her Highness Consort Shu asked me to identify the poison."
Consort Xian sneered, "Finally, she's showing her true colors, Your Majesty. Consort Shu is definitely up to no good. I beg you to issue an order to immediately send Consort Shu to the Cold Palace."
"Her Highness Consort Shu asked me how long it would take for the poison to take effect after I drank it, and whether my death would be gruesome. She also asked me for a lot of highly nourishing pills, and told me to go to Jingyang Palace every day to draw blood." As the imperial physician spoke, he took out several precious pieces of jewelry from his bosom and held them up high: "Her Highness Consort Shu begged me for a long time to let her know if I could not draw blood."
Consort Xian raised an eyebrow, a hint of unease creeping into her eyes, and looked nervously at the Emperor of Dongying.
The Emperor of Dongying's face was terribly gloomy. He looked at Consort Xian with a half-smile and asked, "Consort Xian, who do you think won this round?"
Consort Xian heard the reproach in the tone and her heart sank. She swallowed and looked at the Emperor of Dongying: "Perhaps Consort Shu discovered something and said this on purpose."
"Ha!" The Emperor of Japan sneered.
Consort Xian suddenly felt a chill run down her spine.
The Emperor of Dongying suddenly stood up and hurried towards Jingyang Palace. No matter how much Consort Xian called out to him, he didn't even stop and disappeared at the end of the corridor in the blink of an eye.
"Damn it!" Consort Xian stamped her foot, twisting the handkerchief in her hand until it was almost torn to shreds, then glared fiercely at Physician Li.
Physician Li shrank his neck and lowered his head with an innocent expression.
