Chen Pan'er clearly thought the same thing as her, and carefully placed the packet of realgar in front of her chest, patting it gently.
Ganli found it amusing, yet also felt that such actions revealed a rare childlike innocence, and she couldn't help but smile.
"It's getting late." Gan Li glanced at the sky; they couldn't delay any longer.
She knew that even if she told Chen Pan'er to rest, she wouldn't agree, so she simply didn't say that nonsense and instead instructed, "If you're tired, then take a rest, okay?"
Without waiting for Chen Pan'er's reply, she picked up her sickle and began cutting weeds. Little did she know that her extra instruction warmed Chen Pan'er's heart.
Today, her mother was so kind. It was the first time in her life that she had heard her mother speak to her so gently and care about her.
Chen Pan'er couldn't hide her joy. Watching her mother's busy figure, she quickly bent down and started working as well. She moved nimbly and worked diligently, thinking that if she did more, her mother would have less to do.
Mother has never done any work before. If she were to actually finish all of this today, wouldn't she be exhausted?
Gan Li was unaware that her earlier attempt to 'hide her shortcomings' had been so effective that the young girl genuinely regarded her as a good-for-nothing like the original owner of the body.
Having lived in the city for so many years, she was only somewhat unfamiliar with rural life. However, she had done a lot of farm work since she was a child, so when she started, apart from being a little rusty at first, she quickly became familiar with it and became more and more adept at it.
She didn't think too much about it; she just wanted to finish cleaning the yard as soon as possible so that she wouldn't have nowhere to sleep at night, so she worked very hard.
Ganli believed that the two of them, being quick and efficient, should be able to finish tidying up the small courtyard before sunset.
But as the saying goes, ideals are lofty, but reality is harsh. After working for most of the day, Ganli, covered in sweat, rubbed her aching back and looked at the little courtyard that had hardly changed, and couldn't help but show a worried expression.
Good heavens, she was too hasty!
The courtyard doesn't look big, but it's been uninhabited for too long, and there's just too much to clean up.
If this pace continues, no one will be able to stay here tonight.
If she were alone, it would be fine; she could treat it as a camping trip. But Chen Pan'er is still young, and the dew is heavy at night; she would definitely catch a cold sleeping outside.
If all else fails, she'll have to swallow her pride and go to the Gan family again, begging the old couple to let her stay for the night. But considering their attitude today, Gan Li really wasn't sure what to do.
Just as she was worrying, she heard someone calling her.
