The news that Gan Li had adopted Xiao Si spread like wildfire throughout Yuxi Village and even reached the town. After learning the whole story, everyone condemned Gan Tao Niang's heartlessness and praised Gan Li's good deed.
Hearing that Ganli not only took in Xiao Si, but also sent him to Fengxian School, he was amazed and almost praised her as a Bodhisattva reincarnated.
After all, the tuition fees for a year at the school are not a small amount. Many families are reluctant to send their own biological children to school, let alone their adopted children.
However, when this news reached Chen Yaozu's ears, it was like adding fuel to the fire, making him even more resentful.
Since being expelled from Fengxian School, Chen Yaozu was like a wilted eggplant. He was listless and idle all day, afraid of running into his former classmates on the street and being ridiculed by them. He locked himself at home, hoping that his father, Chen Danian, could come up with a way to get him back to school.
But misfortune never comes singly. Not only did Chen Danian not allow him to return to school, but he also landed himself in jail!
The news came like a bolt from the blue, and Chen Yaozu and Granny Lü were immediately thrown into a panic. To save Chen Danian, they sold off their possessions, from tables and chairs to pots and pans—anything that could be exchanged for money. Even so, the money was still not enough.
Chen Yaozu had no choice but to swallow his pride and beg for money from everyone he could. But news of Chen Danian's actions had already spread far and wide, and his former friends wanted nothing more than to sever ties with him. Who would lend him money?
In the end, they had to sell the house to barely raise enough money to bail Chen Danian out of prison.
With their home gone, they could only take refuge in a dilapidated temple. Chen Danian also seemed like a different person; all his former arrogance was gone, and he spent his days drowning his sorrows in alcohol.
With his hopes of returning to school completely dashed, Chen Yaozu now had to wander the streets, relying on his grandmother, Granny Lü, to beg for food to fill his stomach. He felt extremely aggrieved.
He couldn't help but think: His mother runs a big restaurant, but her son is suffering here. Is this fair?
Several times, he impulsively went to Ganji Restaurant, the aroma of the food so enticing that he couldn't resist. But each time, he only lingered at the entrance for a while before slinking back home dejectedly. It wasn't that he didn't want to go in and enjoy the food, but rather that what he had done before had gone too far, and he was too ashamed to ask for anything in return.
Now that he heard that Gan Li had actually adopted Xiao Si and even sent him to school, Chen Yaozu felt a surge of anger! How could she be so kind to a stranger, yet turn a blind eye to her own son, making him suffer so much!
He believed that Ganli was extremely hypocritical and harbored deep resentment towards her.
Granny Lü hated Gan Li with a vengeance. In her eyes, Gan Li was a cunning woman who pretended to be weak while actually being strong. How honest and well-behaved she was when she was with them! And now? As soon as they divorced, she started a business, opened a restaurant, and made a fortune. She was clearly just hiding her true abilities!
If I had started my business at her place earlier, I wouldn't have treated her badly, and she wouldn't be suffering like this now!
She saw through her grandson's resentment, but instead of comforting him, she fanned the flames:
"Yaozu, can you swallow this insult? Grandma can't! She treats an outsider so well, providing him with good food and drink, and even sending him to school. How can she be so heartless to you, her own son? You're a piece of her own flesh and blood!"
Granny Lü became increasingly agitated as she spoke, urging Chen Yaozu to go find Gan Li:
"Go find her! She owes you, why don't you go and get it back? Even if you can't get it back, you should let everyone know that this so-called philanthropist is nothing but a worthless wretch who wouldn't even care about her own son!"
Chen Yaozu was already feeling upset, and what Granny Lü said was like pouring oil into his heart, making the anger that had been building up inside him burn even brighter.
"That's right! Why does she treat me like this? I'm her son, and she treats an outsider better than me!" Chen Yaozu muttered through gritted teeth, his fists clenched so tightly they cracked.
He jumped up and kicked over the broken bowl in front of him: "I'm going to settle the score with her right now!"
The restaurant was bustling with noise and excitement.
Because it was an exceptionally busy day, even Gan Li was helping prepare the dishes in the kitchen. Suddenly, a loud bang was heard, and Gan Li was startled, so she quickly came out of the kitchen.
Chen Yaozu stood in the center of the hall, a table overturned on the ground, with leftover food scattered everywhere. Still not satisfied, he continued to throw things around, frightening the surrounding guests who all scrambled to avoid him.
Gan Li's face darkened, and she walked a few steps to Chen Yaozu, shouting sternly, "Chen Yaozu, what are you doing here causing trouble?"
When Chen Yaozu saw her come out, he paused in his actions, pointed at Gan Li's nose with his neck stiff, and questioned her in a hoarse voice:
"Why can you support outsiders but not your own son? You pretend to do good deeds for fame and reputation, yet you don't care about your own flesh and blood. Have you lost your conscience?"
He looked around at the pointing and whispering diners, his voice becoming even shriller, almost cracking:
"Everyone, come and see! See what this woman really is! She claims to have the heart of a bodhisattva, but behind her back, she won't even care about her own son!"
Upon hearing this, Gan Li immediately understood. It seemed that Chen Yaozu had heard the news of her adopting Xiao Si and was feeling resentful, which was why he had come to act crazy.
Seeing that Gan Li remained silent, Chen Yaozu assumed she was feeling guilty and became even more smug: "You don't want everyone to know about your shameful deeds, do you? If you want me to shut up, give me what I deserve!"
Ganli was amused by his outrageous remarks and asked him coolly, "What do you deserve?"
"Money, a house, and you have to send me to school!" Chen Yaozu shouted righteously.
Gan Li looked at Chen Yaozu, who was throwing a tantrum, without a trace of anger on her face. Instead, she had a mocking smile on her face.
