Gan Qishan escorted the two men to the door, unloaded the goods, and then left.
Gan Li watched his retreating figure and felt that Gan Qishan was unusually hurried today, as if something was chasing him. She felt a little strange, but she didn't think much of it.
Her mind is now focused on her business—this is her first entrepreneurial venture, and its success or failure will determine whether she can live a life of luxury in the future, so she naturally attaches great importance to it.
She carried the things inside herself and placed them in the main room. Then, she squatted down with a twig and started writing and drawing. Gan Tian couldn't understand what she was doing, but she knew that her mother was making plans for their future livelihood. So she didn't disturb her and went to the kitchen to cook for the mother and daughter.
Ganli was so engrossed in the numbers that she didn't notice. She did the math and realized that in just a few days, she had already spent another six taels of silver!
Among them, saltpeter alone cost three taels of silver. In addition, the grain, sugar, meat, red and green beans, kudzu root powder, custom-made wooden basins, and chartered carriages also cost another three taels.
The original 195 taels of silver have now been reduced to 189 taels.
It's only been a few days! And you've already used eleven ounces!
You don't know until you calculate it, and you'll be shocked when you do. Looking at these numbers, Gan Li felt as if she could see hard-earned money slipping through her fingers. She felt heartbroken, and her desire to earn money grew even stronger.
Fortunately, the major expenses are now gone, and all that's left is to figure out how to make the business work.
Just as Ganli was contemplating her small business, a sudden shout of curses shattered the tranquility, like a thunderclap ripped across the sky.
"Ganli! You troublemaker, get out here right now, or I'll fight you to the death!"
The sharp curses, filled with raging anger, rushed straight to Ganli's ears.
She abruptly snapped out of her thoughts, only to find the voice somewhat familiar. Looking up, she saw a figure sweep across the land like a whirlwind, arriving in an instant. The figure raised a foot, and the fragile fence in front of the gate crumbled instantly under the force, falling apart completely.
The newcomer, however, did not pause at all, rushing in with a flurry of activity, his eyes scanning the courtyard as he continued to curse:
"Ganli, get out here! Today I want to ask you, what have we done to wrong you that you would do this to us? It's one thing to harm others, it's another to harm your own parents and your two brainless brothers! But the worst thing you could do was to harm my child!"
The man started cursing and then burst into tears. His body went limp, and he collapsed to the ground, wailing and cursing.
The sound was quite loud, and since it was lunchtime and everyone was idle, the surrounding residents were immediately drawn out by the noise and curiously peeked in this direction.
Someone immediately recognized the woman and exclaimed in surprise, "Oh, isn't this Old Man Gan's eldest daughter-in-law?"
Gan Li recognized the person at this moment; it was none other than Zhao, the wife of her elder brother Gan Mingli.
She recalled that day when Zhao had argued with Gan Mingli and was beaten, and then angrily went back to her parents' home. Now she's back?
She understood that since the original owner had been a troublemaker in the Gan family, it was normal for Zhao, as the eldest sister-in-law, to have opinions about her.
But since she arrived, she has been very well-behaved these past few days, except for that one day when she had nowhere to go and came back to ask for shelter. Apart from that brief encounter with Zhao Shi, she hadn't seen her since. Zhao Shi's sudden move was quite something.
In the kitchen, Gan Tian was also drawn out by the noise outside. Looking at the scene before her, she was at a loss and looked at her mother in fear.
Although Gan Li was still confused, worried that Zhao Shi might frighten the little girl, she immediately stepped out from the corner and hurried forward to try to help Zhao Shi:
"Sister-in-law, please don't get agitated. We're all family. We can sit down and talk things over. Please get up, and we'll discuss this slowly..."
However, Zhao became agitated and unceremoniously shook off Gan Li's hand, struggling to stand up on her own.
Her face was ashen, her eyes wide with anger as she glared at Ganli, her voice sharp and shrill:
"Are you still pretending to be confused? You stole Baifulai's secret recipe, and now Baifulai's owner is coming to settle accounts with us! You caused trouble and just walked away, living your life as if nothing happened, while my children have to work as slaves to pay off your debts! Is there any justice in this world?"
As her words became more forceful, her emotions grew increasingly agitated. As she turned around, she caught a glimpse of the spatula tightly gripping Gan Tian's hand, while the aroma of food wafting from the kitchen behind her seemed like the most glaring irony.
Like an enraged lioness, Zhao rushed into the kitchen, shoved Gan Tian aside, and then grabbed a stool next to her, smashing it wildly at the kitchen items while roaring:
"You still have the appetite to eat? I'll let you eat! I'll let you eat!"
Each word was accompanied by a loud thud as something heavy fell to the ground, and the kitchen was instantly turned into a mess. Her anger and despair reached their peak in the chaos.
Finally, exhausted, Zhao collapsed to the ground, tears mingling with sweat. She cried out, her voice filled with boundless sorrow:
“I went back to my family to borrow money, but the old folks here are giving money away instead. How come their daughters are considered human, but my children aren't? Heavens above…”
Gan Li was furious when she saw the kitchen she had painstakingly cleaned turned into ruins by this mess. Her temples throbbed with anger. Gan Tian, standing nearby, was terrified by the scene and curled up in a ball, which only made Gan Li feel even more heartbroken.
Zhao's words baffled her, and she retorted, "What silver? Since that day, when have I ever taken any of your silver? And what about being a slave? Who wants to be someone's slave?"
