Gu Yueji had anticipated that Ren Jin's father would come knocking on their door, but she didn't expect it to happen so quickly, less than two weeks after they moved into their new home.
That day, the door was knocked on so hard it looked like it was going to be smashed open. Gu Yueji was startled and nervously walked to the door and peered through the peephole.
She saw three people standing outside the door: two middle-aged men and women and a man about the same age as Ren Jin. She didn't recognize any of them.
As she was looking, the person outside suddenly started banging on the door again. Gu Yueji was so startled that she took a few steps back and turned to go back to her room to get her phone to call Ren Jin. Suddenly, the person outside shouted, "Ren Jin, your father is here. Open the door for me right now!"
Gu Yueji was stunned for a few seconds before she realized that it was Ren Jin's father who had come to her door.
The person outside, perhaps hearing Gu Yueji's footsteps, knocked louder and shouted more confidently, "I know someone's inside. Open the door for me right now. I'm Ren Jin's biological father."
Gu Yueji didn't open the door; she went back to her room and called Ren Jin.
The phone rang twice before I answered, "Honey, why are you calling me at this hour?"
Neither of them were the type to be clingy and need to chat all the time. Usually, when Ren Jin was working on the construction site, Gu Yueji rarely called him.
"You'd better come back," Gu Yueji said.
It was very noisy on Ren Jin's end, and he didn't hear clearly at first. "What did you say?"
Gu Yueji raised her voice, "I'm telling you, go home now."
Ren Jin was taken aback, turned around and walked down the stairs from the construction site towards the office. "What's wrong?"
Gu Yueji had never called him home suddenly while he was working, which made him a little worried.
"Your father and the others have come to our house."
Ren Jin paused, thinking that they had come to his door too quickly. "Okay, I understand. You don't need to pay attention to them. I'll be right back."
Gu Yueji felt relieved after hearing his words.
However, as soon as the phone call ended, a loud shout came from outside the door: "Open the door right now, do you hear me? If you don't open the door today, we won't leave. I'll call all your neighbors out and let them see how this unfilial son locks his own father out. Let's see if you're afraid of losing face."
Gu Yueji was initially a little scared, but hearing these words felt somewhat familiar. She remembered how Ren had knocked on her door when he went in before, and the tone of his voice was very similar.
Their noise would indeed disturb the neighbors, and if they weren't let in today, they would keep coming back. After thinking it over, Gu Yueji finally opened the door.
As soon as she opened the door, the people outside swarmed into the house as if they were about to rob it.
This was the first time Gu Yueji had met Ren Jin's father. She hadn't even seen a photo of him before, but she could tell at a glance that Ren Yayong was Ren Jin's father. In particular, his deep eyes and high nose bridge were almost identical. However, Ren Yayong was not as tall and strong as Ren Jin. Compared to Ren Jin's occasional roguishness, Ren Yayong's face had more of a violent and hooligan air.
Ren Yayong glared at her with anger and displeasure, as if blaming Gu Yueji for being inconsiderate and locking her father-in-law out. If this was her first time meeting the parents, she might not be able to marry Ren Jin.
The three of them went straight to the living room and sat down, filling all three sofas. They all stared at Gu Yueji, looking ready to start a fight.
However, Gu Yueji only glanced at them, closed the door, tidied up the shoes they had kicked around the door, and then went back to the kitchen to prepare the ingredients for tonight's dinner.
Ren Yayong and the others were taken aback, especially Ren Yayong, who had a lot to say and thought Gu Yueji would kick them out and argue with them. However, she went to the kitchen and stayed there as if they didn't exist.
Ren Yayong couldn't stand it, especially in front of his wife and son. As if to show off his status, he ordered the kitchen, "Hey you, we're hungry, cook us some food!"
The kitchen was quiet, without a single response.
Ren Yayong's face immediately turned ugly, and he shouted even louder, "Did you hear me! We're hungry."
Still no one answered.
Ren Yayong's wife, Zhao Juan, noticed that they were being ignored and sarcastically remarked, "They really are like pots and pans, with no manners at all."
Gu Yueji, who had just stepped out of the kitchen, overheard these words: "Shouting and yelling at someone's doorstep, barging into someone's home without permission, and even ordering someone to cookâis this a person with any manners?"
Zhao Juan was surprised that Gu Yueji happened to come out at that moment. She turned around and adopted the demeanor of an elder, saying, "How dare you speak to your elders like that!"
Gu Yueji gave a cold laugh, "May I ask, what kind of elder are you to me?"
Even if she had called Ren Yayong "Dad," it wouldn't have mattered to her as his second wife.
Zhao Juan was so angry that her face turned red, but she couldn't refute it. Gu Yueji was obviously not the kind of soft persimmon that could be easily manipulated. She didn't even care about Ren Yayong, let alone her.
Gu Yueji didn't want to argue with them anymore. She wiped her hands with a towel and said, "Ren Jin will be back soon. If you want to wait, you can sit here. If you don't want to wait, get out."
Ren Yayong was furious at Gu Yueji's attitude. "I told you to cook for us, don't you understand?!"
Gu Yueji turned around and took out some biscuits and a few bottles of mineral water from the kitchen, placing them on the coffee table. "I still have things to do. If you're really hungry, have some biscuits and water."
Ren Yayong slammed his hand on the coffee table. "What kind of attitude is this! Who are you trying to fool with this stuff! I am Ren Jin's biological father, which means I am your father. It is only natural for me to cook for your father."
Gu Yueji glanced at him indifferently, "If I call you 'Dad,' I have to pay a 'change of address fee.' Are you going to give it to me now?"
