Chapter 36 Are you bringing up old grievances?

Ren Jin left a document at home and called Gu Yueji to have it delivered to the construction site. This was Gu Yueji's first time visiting Ren Jin's construction site, and she drove for quite a while following the navigation.

Standing at the entrance to the construction site, which was surrounded by blue corrugated iron sheets, Gu Yueji found that the site was larger than she had imagined.

Large dump trucks came and went, kicking up clouds of dust, and the roar of various machines echoed all around. Gu Yueji had to turn the volume up to the maximum when she called Ren Jin.

No one answered the phone, so Gu Yueji waited for a while before going in to look for the person herself.

She hadn't walked far into the construction site when she saw Ren Jin. He was wearing a red construction hat and standing in the dusty and noisy environment, smoking and talking to someone.

He changed into the same gray work clothes as everyone else, but Gu Yueji recognized him at a glance, despite his tall and upright figure and the way he held a cigarette between two fingers.

He hadn't even finished his cigarette when his gaze shifted and he saw her. He paused, said something to the person next to him, and then walked straight over.

"Have you been here a long time?" He took her hand and led her toward the office.

"No, I just arrived."

Ren Jin pushed open a door among a row of shipping containers, gently helped her inside, and closed the door, shutting out the noise from outside.

His office was simple, with a desk and a coffee table and sofa next to it.

Ren Jin took the documents from her hand and put them in the drawer, then took the thermos from the table, unscrewed it, and handed it to her.

Gu Yueji took the drink with both hands and sipped it slowly. Ren Jin gently stroked her rosy cheeks and said, "Your fair and delicate face standing here on the construction site reminds me of a poem."

Gu Yueji was surprised, not expecting him to know poetry. "Which poem?"

"Rising from the mud, yet remaining unstained."

Gu Yueji smiled speechlessly, "What kind of analogy is that?"

Ren Jin didn't argue. Seeing that she had finished drinking, he naturally took the water glass from her and put the lid on. "Wait for me in the office. I'll finish my work as soon as possible and then we'll go home together."

Gu Yueji thought about it, since she had never seen him work before, and said, "Okay, no rush, you go ahead and get busy."

This was the first time Gu Yueji had seen Ren Jin at work. She had no idea what a contractor was like before, but now she realized how busy he was.

Wearing a construction hat, he moved around everywhere, with people constantly coming to him. He had to take care of everything, big and small. One minute the client would call him to come to a meeting, the next he would climb up a floor and stand with his hands on his hips to check on the workers' progress, and then he would be making phone calls from his office to arrange earthwork and construction machinery.

Ren Jin is not a good-tempered person. He has a roguish and thuggish air about him. He speaks kindly at first, but when he gets angry, he mixes half of his words with curses. However, he is also a man of skill and emotional intelligence. He knows when to give each other a way out after using both soft and hard tactics. He can switch freely between talking and cursing.

In just half a day, Gu Yueji watched Ren Jin quickly resolve a host of problems. She admired strength; she liked a man's decisiveness and shrewd wisdom, both of which Ren Jin possessed.

This reminded Gu Yueji of Ren Jin's previous experience delivering food.

At that time, she pitied him, thinking he was weak and helpless and needed her protection and care. Now it seems that it was all an act by this man.

Ren Jin was busy until almost evening before he finished dealing with his business. He originally suggested eating out before going home, but Gu Yueji suddenly said she wanted to eat the dishes he cooked.

Although Ren Jin found it hard to understand why she had such unique tastes, he still accompanied her to the supermarket to buy groceries.

Ren Jin changed his clothes and went to the kitchen to make the grilled fish she had specified.

After finally finishing cleaning the fish, he looked at it, sweating profusely, and sighed deeply, wondering why Gu Yueji hadn't had it cleaned properly. He then took out some side dishes from the bag: bean sprouts, onions, and taro. Gu Yueji had told him to remove the ends of the bean sprouts, slice the onions, and peel and dice the taro.

When Gu Yueji came out after washing up, she was startled to see Ren Jin wiping away tears while chopping vegetables.

What's wrong with you?

Ren Jin glanced at her with red eyes, "Gu Yueji, are you deliberately messing with me today?"

Gu Yueji smelled the onion, saw his red eyes and nose, tried hard to suppress the upward curve of his lips, and asked him innocently, "What did I do?"

"I can tolerate the fish being fishy and difficult to handle, and I can also tolerate picking the bean sprouts one by one for ages. I can also tolerate the taro peeling that makes my hands itch to death. But damn it, these onions are so spicy that I can't stop crying as soon as I touch them."

Ren Jin's eyes were stinging and tears kept streaming down his face, so he didn't see Gu Yueji covering her mouth and laughing uncontrollably.

Ren Jin sniffed and wiped his eyes in disgust. A grown man urinating in front of his own woman.

"Tell me, did you do that on purpose?"

Gu Yueji quickly grabbed his hand, "Your hands are covered in onion juice, the more you rub it, the more your eyes will sting."

"You don't want to eat out, you insist on eating at home."

"I really want to eat your grilled fish."

"I think you're just deliberately messing with me."

"You're not afraid of the hassle? Didn't you go and deliver food because you can't stand being idle?"

Ren Jin didn't think much of it, "Isn't delivering food a good job?"

You can make money and get a wife.

Gu Yueji looked up at him and said, "It's pretty good. You can flirt with girls everywhere, and even have people feed and drink you if you say a few sweet words."

Ren Jin paused in rubbing his eyes, as if he had realized something.

Turning to face Gu Yueji, she crossed her arms and looked at him with a bright smile, but the smile carried a hint of accusation.

Ren Jin was stunned. They had been perfectly fine all day. He raised an eyebrow and asked uncertainly, "Are you bringing up old grievances?"

He blinked his wet eyes and sniffled, which made Gu Yueji find him both cute and funny.
