Actually, she was just feeling resentful when she left the construction site and wanted to punish him a little. But when she got home, everything was fine, and all she remembered was the warmth he had given her in this home.
But since he had done it, he didn't deny it and half-jokingly admitted, "I just wanted to see if I could find anything else."
Ren Jin laughed when he heard this.
He originally thought it best not to bring up old grievances, but perhaps because they had been getting along well lately and he wasn't afraid of upsetting her, or perhaps he suddenly felt that it would be better to explain things clearly so that there would be no lingering resentment between them.
He wasn't nervous anymore, and while chopping onions, he said smugly, "What am I going to do now? I've got the marriage certificate and I've also tricked her into my hands."
Gu Yueji was stunned. She thought he was going to coax her, but instead he was acting so infuriatingly. "You've shown your true colors now that you're married? Don't you want a peaceful life anymore?"
Ren Jin raised an eyebrow, arrogant yet frank, "I only told you this after we got married. I didn't want to explain anything to you before."
Gu Yueji asked incredulously, "Am I wrong to lie to you?"
Ren Jin put down the knife in his hand, wiped his hands, and faced her. "Okay, I lied to you, I was wrong, I admit it, but you're not entirely right either."
She always felt that he had deceived her first, and that the fault lay with him. "How am I not entirely right?"
"I admit I was wrong to hide this from you, but is it really that unforgivable? I didn't cheat you out of money like you, Ye Zurong, nor did I cheat on you with other women. If you find out I hid it from you, you can scold me, hit me, I'll accept it. We can have a fight and clear things up. But you, without saying a word, made all the decisions, then said you were a 'friends with benefits' and that you looked down on me, then threw a suitcase at me and kicked me out, making me feel like a dog you picked up and then threw away. And you think you're right to do that?"
"You're distorting the truth!"
Seeing that she was still arguing with him, Ren Jinjue knew he had to talk her out of it today, otherwise she would keep bringing it up and making a scene, and life would be unbearable.
"Okay, let's skip the meal for now." With that, he picked her up and carried her towards the bedroom. Gu Yueji struggled, so he pinched her. He knew her too well; his pinch made her tremble and her body go limp.
He threw her onto the bed and then climbed on top of her.
She braced herself against him with both hands, saying, "You can't solve problems by bullying me."
"I'm not trying to bully you, I just want to have a good talk with you and see how you can move on from this."
She gestured for him to be lying on top of her, "Shall we have a proper chat in bed?"
"Yeah, if we don't have a good conversation, I'll bully you again."
Gu Yueji was amused by his words and instead wrapped her arms around his neck.
Ren Jin looked at her smile, pinched her smooth cheek, rolled over and pulled her onto his lap. While gently stroking her back, he slowly said, "To be honest, I don't know what you're angry about. Did I really not treat you well during the time we were together? When you were sick, I poured you tea and water, and even washed your underwear. You said I cared about money, but didn't I spend any money on you? The medical expenses for your doctor, the boxes of health supplements I bought for you when you weren't getting better. Didn't you see any of that? You even said I was comfortable being taken care of by you. At that time, I couldn't be bothered to say another word to you. I just thought you were heartless."
Leaning her head against his chest, listening to him recount each story, Gu Yueji felt a little guilty. Ren Jin was good to her; even if she didn't say anything, he would silently remember what she liked and disliked to eat. When she had a fever, he would get up several times at night to feed her medicine and wipe her sweat. He would cook porridge and bring it to her bedside to feed her. Ye Zurong had never washed her underwear, but Ren Jin washed it all for her.
Ren Jin put his arm around her shoulder and shook her. "So, do you remember how good I was to you?"
Gu Yueji retorted softly, "That's because I treat you better."
Ren Jin nodded in agreement, "Yes, I just like how good you are to me."
Gu Yueji looked up at him, and he lowered his head to peck her lips. "My parents divorced when I was little, and they never cared about me. From as far back as I can remember, I always helped my grandparents with farm work, cutting grass, feeding pigs, planting crops, and cooking. I knew that if I didn't do this, we might not have enough to eat. In junior high, I became addicted to video games. Once, I couldn't resist stealing my grandfather's money to go to an internet cafe. When I got home, my grandfather picked up a carrying pole and beat me, cursing me as he did so, saying that he wouldn't care about me if I weren't his grandson. I'm very grateful to my grandparents, but they took care of me because I was their grandson. But when I see you cooking and waiting for me to come home, when you see my shoes are worn out and replace them with new ones, when you feel sorry for my hard work, you know? I especially enjoy being taken care of by you. Even though I have nothing, and we have no relationship whatsoever, you still treat me unconditionally well. This is something I've never experienced before."
Gu Yueji was somewhat moved as she listened, pressing her face against his chest to listen to his strong heartbeat. She took his hand from his stomach and stroked the thick, hard calluses on his palm.
Ren Jin felt her touch and his voice softened. "I sincerely want to marry you and spend my life with you. Two people living together will definitely need to adjust to each other, and life will always encounter various unpleasant things. Can we make an agreement that no matter what happens in the future, we can talk about it face to face? If I do something wrong, you can scold me or hit me, but don't make any messy decisions based on your own overthinking. Let's discuss it properly. Can you agree?"
Gu Yueji nodded obediently without hesitation, "Yes."
Ren Jin smiled, cupped her head, and kissed her, about to praise her, when she looked up and said, "But I still want to eat grilled fish tonight."
Ren Jin smiled helplessly yet indulgently, and bit her lip. "Eat, you have to finish it tonight."
