"Why does Qian Mingjun have a gift?" Ren Jin muttered as he opened the bag and glanced at it. "I told you not to buy anything. My aunt doesn't mind these things. I've been to her house so many times and never bought anything."
Gu Yueji ignored him, "You and your aunt don't need to, but this is the first time I've met your elders, so it's just a matter of courtesy."
Ren Jin really didn't care. His family wasn't a big family, so there weren't many rules to follow.
"You're making it sound like I was so immature before."
Gu Yueji shoved the things into his hands, pushed him out the door, and said, "You're just being insensible."
Ren Jin put his arm around her waist and was about to kiss her, saying, "Okay, I've married a college graduate, so I know a lot. From now on, you'll be in charge of everything at home."
Gu Yueji dodged him, "Don't ruin my makeup."
Ren Jin's aunt's family lived in a rural area on the outskirts of the city, in the village next to his hometown. As the car drove along the road that was gradually becoming familiar, Ren Jin suddenly remembered something and turned the car around.
"Let me take you to meet my grandparents first." He turned his head and glanced at Gu Yueji.
Gu Yueji was stunned. "Why didn't you say so sooner?"
"It's alright, no need to prepare anything, we'll just go to my grandparents' graves to burn incense."
He navigated the country lanes with familiarity, bought incense and candles, and finally parked his car beside a country path.
Ren Jin got out of the car, carrying the things he bought in one hand and holding Gu Yueji's hand in the other. "The car can't go any further, let's walk."
Gu Yueji held his hand tightly, looking at the vast expanse of farmland before them, "Is this where you grew up?"
"Yes, I used to walk this path to school. When the rice plants grew tall, the wind would blow and the rice leaves would sway like waves, which was very pleasant to look at. During summer vacation, we loved to catch fish in the paddy fields. It was fun, and we could catch fish to take home and fry." He said, his lips curving into a smile, full of memories.
"Where do you live?" Gu Yueji asked curiously when she saw that he hadn't taken her home but had come here directly.
His eyes darkened, and he gazed into the distance, a hint of melancholy in his eyes. "Our house has been demolished and replaced with a factory. It's no longer visible."
Gu Yueji then remembered that their new house was a resettlement house built as part of a demolition project.
Everyone envies demolition and relocation, but it also means that home and memories will be nowhere to be found in the future.
She hugged his arm and comforted him, "Our new house will be renovated this year."
Ren Jin lowered his eyes, and she looked up at him with a warm gaze. He looked closely at her full oval face, her pretty nose, and her full red lips that looked so tempting.
She's become more and more beautiful thanks to him.
He pinched her chin but said something he didn't mean: "If I bring such an ugly wife home, won't my grandparents say something to me?"
Gu Yueji was taken aback. "Am I ugly?"
She wasn't very confident about her appearance to begin with, and she cared even more about Ren Jin's opinion. Grabbing him, she asked again, "Do you really think I'm ugly?"
A gust of wind swept by, and Ren Jin smiled as he pulled her into his arms to shield her from the wind. No matter how much she kept asking questions, he just smiled and walked forward with her in his arms.
His grandparents' graves are next to a small grove of trees. The bleak, cold wind rustles the trees. In the past, Ren Jin would come alone every year at this time and feel especially lonely and cold.
Now, watching the woman squatting in front of the grave burning incense, I heard her softly introduce herself to her grandparents' tombstones, saying that she would take care of him and support each other in the future.
Ren Jin stood silently beside her until she finished speaking, then pulled her up to stand and kissed her hair.
Looking at his grandparents' graves, he knew in his heart that they must be very satisfied with this granddaughter-in-law.
