Chapter 18 She's Not My Wife

He smiled, gestured for her to come over, and she told her viewers that she was going to the restroom before pausing the live stream.

She walked to his side. "What's wrong?"

He hugged her. "Is your stomach feeling any better? You were already asleep when I got back last night, so I didn't ask you anything."

"Okay, no, we need to go to the hospital now."

Ren Jin thought about it and realized he had asked a pointless question. "What do you want to eat for lunch? I'll bring it back for you."

"Bring me some porridge, I want to drink porridge."

After Ren Jin finished breakfast, he said he was going out to look for a job and left. After he closed the door, Gu Yueji stared blankly at the door panel.

She wondered how long he could keep up the act if he didn't say anything.

By the afternoon, Gu Yueji felt her head getting heavier and her bones aching. She was usually in good health, and although she felt cold sitting in the living room last night, she thought it would be fine. Unexpectedly, she was catching a cold.

When Ren Jin returned home in the evening, he was surprised again. In the dimly lit living room, Gu Yueji, who was usually live streaming at this time, was nowhere to be seen.

"Gu Yueji?"

After a while, her soft voice came from the bedroom, "I'm in my room."

Upon entering the bedroom, all that could be seen in the dim light was the raised blankets.

He turned on the light and saw her lying on the bed with one hand covering her eyes, saying in a slightly hoarse voice, "I think I have a cold, I want to sleep for a while."

He went straight over and touched her forehead, then lifted her blanket. "You have a fever. Get up, we're going to the hospital."

"I'll be fine after a good night's sleep."

This time he didn't listen to her. He took her clothes and said, "Change your clothes and go see a doctor."

In the end, he half-dragged and half-carried me to the hospital. After a round of examinations, it was found that the fever was caused by gastroenteritis and I needed to have an IV drip.

Gu Yueji leaned back in her chair, feeling her body temperature rise and her eyelids grow heavier and heavier, until a sharp pain on the back of her hand startled her and made her open her eyes.

As his hand instinctively tried to pull away, it was held firmly by another hand. "Don't move," Ren Jin whispered in his ear.

Looking at the back of her hand, she saw that the nurse was giving her an IV drip.

After the nurse finished the IV drip, Ren Jin tugged at her clothes and asked, "Are you cold?"

Gu Yueji shook her head, feeling a dry, itchy throat. "I want to drink some hot water."

Ren Jin was about to ask the nurse where there was hot water when the aunt sitting opposite him, who was receiving an IV drip, said, "There's a water dispenser on the first floor."

Ren Jin turned around. "Thank you, Auntie." Seeing a thermos next to her, he asked, "Would you like me to get you something too?"

"No need, I have water, thank you."

Ren Jin went out and came back, carrying two disposable cups. The cups were small, and each cup could only hold about two mouthfuls. Gu Yueji drank both cups in one go.

"Do you want more?" Ren Jin asked.

Gu Yueji still felt discomfort in her throat. "Yes."

So Ren Jin ran to the first floor to get water several times. Perhaps because she was drinking water and getting an injection at the same time, Gu Yueji needed to go to the toilet soon after drinking the water, so Ren Jin accompanied her to the bathroom with the IV drip.

When she came back, she asked for water again, but Ren Jin refused to give her any.

Gu Yueji looked at him with a wronged expression, and Ren Jin asked, "Are you hungry? I'll go buy you something to eat."

She was starving; she hadn't eaten dinner and hadn't had a proper meal since. She just had a fever and no appetite. "Why don't you buy some plain porridge?" she said.

He left after saying that, but he came back in the blink of an eye, holding a disposable cup in his hand, and placed it next to her armrest. "I'll only give you one cup. Drink less, or you'll complain of pain if you get it on your hand when you go to the toilet."

Gu Yueji stared blankly up at him, her heart feeling as if it had been suddenly placed in a glass of warm water, both warm and swollen. She reached out and held his hand, the one without the injection.

Ren Jin looked into Gu Yueji's eyes. Even with a mask on, the things in her eyes were clearer, revealing a dependence that filled Ren Jin with an indescribable sense of satisfaction. "I'll be back soon."

Gu Yueji kept watching Ren Jin's departing figure, her gaze lingering for a long time. The aunt across from her smiled and said, "You two seem to have a very good relationship. Did you just get married?"

Gu Yueji was taken aback, turned around to look at her aunt, and didn't know what to say.

The aunt continued with a smile, "Your husband is so good to you."

This time, Gu Yueji smiled at her aunt, as if acquiescing.

Ren Jin hadn't returned yet, and Gu Yueji needed to use the restroom again. Actually, she could go by herself; she didn't have to wait for him. She just liked the feeling of him being with her.

After enduring it for a while, I couldn't hold it in any longer and went to get the medicine bottle myself.

When Ren Jin returned from buying porridge, he was surprised to find the seats empty.

Seeing him looking around for someone, the aunt kindly told him, "Your wife went to the toilet."

Ren Jin paused for two seconds after hearing the term "wife" before realizing that she was referring to Gu Yueji, and subconsciously explained, "She's not my wife."

Gu Yueji returned with the medicine bottle and overheard Ren Jin's words. Her face flushed instantly, but her heart turned cold in an instant.

When Ren Jin and the aunt turned to look at her at the same time, she didn't even dare to look at the aunt, nor did she dare to go back to the seat opposite the aunt. She just found a random seat near the door and sat down.

Ren Jin carried the porridge over and asked, "Why are you sitting here?"

Gu Yueji lowered her head and remained silent.

Ren Jin opened the porridge to feed her, but Gu Yueji dodged away and took the bowl from him to eat by herself.

Her reaction was completely different from before he left. Ren Jin thought for a moment, "You're unhappy when I said you're not my wife?"

Gu Yueji paused, holding the spoon. "No, it wasn't."

When she heard her aunt say that her husband was so good to her, a faint hope flickered in her mind: perhaps he was serious about her too, since to outsiders he seemed to treat her well.

However, his subconscious denial of their relationship revealed his true feelings, making Gu Yueji realize how ridiculous her hopes were.
