I finished the rest of the porridge in one go and threw the box into the trash can.
Having not been sick for several years, Gu Yueji fell ill this time, and her condition persisted for nearly half a month without fully recovering. She would have headaches one moment and cough the next. Ren Jin tried to persuade her to have a full-body checkup, but Gu Yueji refused, feeling it was too expensive.
That evening, Ren Jin was cooking noodles in the kitchen when the phone on the coffee table rang.
Gu Yueji glanced at the caller ID, which read "General Manager Zhong of Xuji". If she wasn't mistaken, Xuji was a real estate company in G City.
He looked away and called out towards the kitchen, "Ren Jin, your phone."
When Ren Jin came out with two bowls of noodles, the call had already ended. He put down the noodles, picked up his phone, glanced at Gu Yueji, and said, "You eat the noodles first, I'll go out and make a call."
Before the door was even closed, I heard him call out "Brother Zhong" into the phone. Then the door closed, and I couldn't hear anything anymore.
Gu Yueji glanced at the tomato and egg noodles on the table but didn't touch them.
When Ren Jin returned after making the phone call, he saw two bowls of noodles untouched on the table, the noodles already swollen. He asked Gu Yueji, "Why aren't you eating?"
Gu Yueji then put down the clothes in her hand, walked to the dining table and sat down. "I thought I'd let it cool down a bit before eating, and then I forgot."
Ren Jin looked at the lump of noodles and said, "Why don't you just skip this and I'll take you out to eat."
The client just called to say that construction will officially start next week. After waiting for so long, construction is finally starting. He was thinking of taking Gu Yueji out to celebrate and have a nice meal.
Gu Yueji picked up a noodle and put it in her mouth, saying, "No need, I prefer softer noodles."
Ren Jin looked at Gu Yueji's increasingly thin face. After being sick for so long, she seemed to have returned to the skin and bones she had first met. Her chin was even pointed, and she had no energy at all. He couldn't help but frown. "Why are you still not getting better after being sick for so long? Have you taken the health supplements I bought for you?"
Ren Jin turned to look for the immune-boosting health supplements he had bought for her, but he didn't know where she had put them; he couldn't even find the boxes.
“I don’t like eating those,” Gu Yueji said, her head down.
"I won't take health supplements, I won't go to the hospital, and medicine isn't helping. What do you want?"
"I'm much better these past two days, and I'm fine now."
Ren Jin realized that he had no way to deal with Gu Yueji when she got stubborn, "Then hurry up and eat your noodles and get some rest."
While the two were eating noodles, Ren Jin looked at his phone and occasionally smiled, clearly in a good mood.
"Is there something good? You're smiling so happily," Gu Yueji asked.
Ren Jin was taken aback. His first reaction was to lock the screen and put down his phone. After thinking for a moment, he said in a light tone, "I found a job."
Gu Yueji smiled in response, "Oh? What job have you found that makes you so happy?"
"It's that construction site I mentioned before. They're starting work next week and asked me to go there as a construction supervisor. Mingjun is coming with me too, so we can look after each other."
Gu Yueji smiled and nodded, "It's fine, just be careful not to overwork yourself." Then she lowered her head and ate her noodles without asking any more questions.
Ren Jin wondered if it was just his imagination, but he felt that Gu Yueji's expression was always indifferent. She would ask him a couple of questions about his affairs but wouldn't ask any more. When she smiled at him, her eyes didn't have the same sparkling look as before.
But upon closer inspection, Ren Jin couldn't find anything unusual. He could only conclude that she had been sick recently and lacked energy.
